‘Boys 24’ survival program to debut on Sat.

Forty-nine young Korean men hoping to become the next K-pop stars will be participating in the new survival audition program “Boys 24.”
The upcoming show, run by CJ E&M, is different from other audition programs in that the men will be competing against each other in groups.

“People are saying the popularity of K-pop is waning,” Ahn Suk-joon, head of CJ E&M’s music department, said at a press conference on Thursday. “However, we wish to raise the recognition of K-pop once again through this program,”

The men will form groups to compete against other teams, after which 24 semifinalists will stage live performances at a concert hall for a year.

Based on these shows, the top six members will be chosen to form a new boy group.

Veteran singers Shin Hye-sung and Lee Min-woo of first-generation K-pop boy group Shinhwa are taking part in the program as mentors.
The first episode will air on Saturday at 11:30 p.m.

The program, which runs through Aug. 6, will air on numerous cable channels including Mnet, tvN and OnStyle.
