Washington will deploy Thaad to Korea

Seoul and Washington agreed to deploy the U.S.-led Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system in Korea, a move aimed at countering North Korean nuclear and missile threats, the Ministry of National Defense announced Friday.

The joint announcement between the two allied nations prompted immediate opposition from China and Russia, who claimed that the placement of the advanced American missile defense system on the Korean Peninsula poses a risk to their own security and contributes to regional instability.

Thomas Vandal, chief of staff of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) and commander of the Eighth Army, said in a press briefing that a joint decision between the two countries was reached to deploy the Thaad system here as a defense measure, taking into consideration the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

류제승 국방부 국방정책실장과 토마스 밴달 주한미군 참모장 겸 주한 미8군 사령관은 기자회견에서 양국은 한미동맹을 고려해 방어조치로 사드를 한반도에 배치하기로 결정했다고 발표했다.
This decision, said Yoo, was a measure “to guarantee the security of the Republic of Korea and our people from North Korea’s nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile threats, as well as to protect the military assets of the ROK-U.S. alliance.”

류 실장은 “사드 배치 결정은 한미동맹의 군사 자산을 보호할 뿐만 아니라 북한의 핵무기와 대량살상 무기, 탄도미사일의 위협으로부터 대한민국과 국민의 안전을 보장하기 위한 조치”라고 말했다.
He added that the Thaad system will be deployed by the USFK no later than the end of next year and that a decision on the location of its placement is also in its “final stages.”

류 실장은 늦어도 내년 말까지는 주한미군이 사드를 배치할 것이고 배치 장소 결정은 최종 단계에 있다고 덧붙였다.
“North Korea’s continued pursuit of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction in opposition to its commitments to the international community require our alliance to ensure that we retain the ability to defend ourselves in the face of this threat,” said Vandal. “Deploying Thaad to the Korean Peninsula will improve our missile defense posture, which is a critical aspect of our defense strategy.”
