Wild rumors defying science

“Thaad melon” and “electromagnetic melon” are the terms that leftists have applied to melons produced in Seongju, North Gyeongsang.

They make provocative allegations about the effect that the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) will have on local produce. Some even claim that the electromagnetic waves will kill bees and that melons won’t be able to grow. Surprisingly, people believe the rumors just like they did during the panic over mad cow disease and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Even when the Ministry of National Defense allowed media testing of the Green Pine radar, a top military secret, and when the defense minister said he would become a human subject for experimentation, these measures didn’t help. The U.S. Forces will soon make the Thaad radar in Guam public.

The leftists are fanning the fears about electromagnetic waves. “A guard standing in front of the radar during World War II died, and the autopsy showed that all his organs had dried up. Another guard experienced forgetfulness and died. The autopsy showed that his brain had melted away. The microwave was developed from the inverse concept.” The residents of Seongju are scared that they may get cancer as the electromagnetic waves of Thaad are stronger. But these are lies. Microwaves were discovered when Percy Spencer, who was experimenting with a magnetron in 1945, noticed that the electromagnetic waves made the chocolate in his pocket melt. Spencer was exposed to electromagnetic waves extensively but lived to the age of 76, back when the average life expectancy of the American male was 67.

The seed of the Thaad panic was an investigative report by progressive media in Japan on June 29, 2015. The story, titled “Strong Electromagnetic Waves… Nausea and Dizziness Experienced near the Military Base,” was about Kyoto Prefecture’s Kyogamisaki site where a Thaad system is deployed. But the actual article mainly delivers the stance of a director of a group opposing Thaad. Also, the cause of the nausea and dizziness was low-frequency noise from a generator, not the ultra-high frequency waves from the radar. But the article maliciously misleads readers to think that the Thaad electromagnetic waves are associated with nausea and dizziness. Unlike Kyogamisaki, the Thaad base in Seongju would be connected to power lines, and unless there is a blackout, the power generator won’t be in operation.

If the Thaad rumors are true, scientific theories should be changed. Electromagnetic waves don’t pass through metals but are reflected, and that is how radar detects planes and missiles. Thaad radar is a precise system that can trace 10-meter-long (32-foot-long) ballistic missile in the air from hundreds of kilometers away. As the name suggests, Thaad literally focuses on high-altitude objects. Therefore, the electromagnetic waves discharged at larger than 5 degrees from the Seongju base at 400 meter above sea level would not affect the residents and melons in Seongju in the low-lying areas. Otherwise, Thaad would be nothing but a useless 1.5 trillion-won ($1.32 billion) luxury good.

The leftists didn’t forget the urban legend that electromagnetic waves could build up like radiation. But the World Health Organization advises otherwise. Its official site states that there is no evidence of heat emission or harmful health effects associated with high frequency waves below the allowed standard. There is no need to fear Thaad electromagnetic fields below the allowed standard. The electromagnetic wave reading at 300 meters from the Green Pine radar — which is more powerful than Thaad — was only 4.4 percent of the safe limit. The National Radio Research Agency said that the impact of electromagnetic waves on humans is reversely proportional to the cube of the distance. Lying on a heating pad or passing by an automatic drive system would expose one to more electromagnetic waves than living in Seongju.

I have no intention of siding with the government, which aggravated the situation by hiding behind strategic ambiguity and military security.

Perhaps the crisis will only come down after a demonstration in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, just as it had been for the mad cow disease, the constructions of Gangjeong port in Jeju Island and the Miryang transmission tower. But rumors by the progressive camp are a problem.

They go against scientific theories and the official position of the WHO. The National Radio Research Agency explained that Thaad, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use 2-300 GHZ frequencies, and there is little problem as long as it is below the safe limit. After all, humans are capricious. We complain that wifi and Bluetooth are too weak, but that the Thaad radar is too strong.

‘사드 참외’ ‘전자파 참외’는 좌파 진영이 성주 참외에 붙이는 낙인이다. 성주 참외 “‘사 드’세요” 같은 자극적 구호도 등장했다. 전자파로 꿀벌이 멸종돼 성주 참외가 열리지 않는다는 저주까지 퍼붓는다. 놀라운 점은 이런 괴담이 먹혀드는 현실이다. 광우병ㆍ메르스에 이은 괴담 시즌2가 돌아온 것이다. 국방부가 최고등급 군사기밀인 그린파인 레이더를 공개하고 국방장관이 “내가 전자파 생체실험 대상이 되겠다”고 해도 소용이 없다. 미군은 곧 괌의 사드 레이더까지 공개할 모양이다.

좌파는 한껏 전자파의 공포를 부채질한다. “2차 대전 때 레이더 앞에 서 있던 보초병이 죽었다. 부검을 해 보니 내장이 모두 말라 있었다. 한 보초병은 자꾸 건망증이 생기더니 죽었다. 해부하니 뇌가 녹아 없었졌다더라. 그 역발상으로 개발한 게 전자 레인지다.” 이러니 성주 주민들이 “사드 전자파가 더 쎄다는데 모두 암에 걸리는 것 아니냐”며 벌벌 떠는 건 당연하다. 하지만 새빨간 거짓말이다. 전자레인지는 1945년 레이더용 마크네트론을 실험하던 퍼시 스펜서가 전자기파로 자신의 주머니 속 초콜릿이 녹은 것을 보고 발견한 것이다. 스펜서는 전자파에 엄청 노출됐으나 76세까지 장수했다.(70년 미국 남성 평균수명 67세)

사드 괴담의 씨앗은 지난해 6월29일 한 진보언론의 일본발 르포기사였다. 사드가 배치된 교토의 교가미사키를 현지 취재해 ‘강한 전자파…기지 근처 가면 구토,어지럼증’이란 제목을 붙였다. 하지만 기사 내용을 살펴보면 엉뚱하다. 우선 사드 반대단체 사무국장의 일방적 이야기로 가득차 있다. 또 ‘구토와 어지럼증’의 원인은 레이더의 초고주파가 아니라 발전기의 저주파 소음 때문이다. 그러나 교묘하게 ‘사드 전자파=구토•어지럼증=위험’으로 ‘악마의 편집’을 해놓았다. 또 교가미사키와 달리 성주의 사드 기지는 송전선으로 연결되는 만큼 정전이 되지 않는 한 발전기를 돌릴 일은 거의 없다.

좌파의 괴담은 카메라로 사진 찍히면 영혼을 빼앗긴다고 믿었던 아프리카 토인들을 닮았다. 괴담대로라면 과학이론을 다 뜯어고쳐야할 판이다. 전파는 금속을 통과 못하고 반사된다. 레이더가 비행기와 미사일을 탐지하는 것도 이 때문이다. 사드 레이더는 수백km 밖에서 10m짜리 탄도미사일을 고공에서 추적하는 정밀 시스템으로 직진 지향성이 생명이다. 또한 사드라는 낱말 자체가 고(高)고도용이다. 따라서 해발 400m의 성주 기지에서 5도 이상의 각도로 발사된 전파가 저지대의 성주 주민과 참외 쪽으로 날아갈 일은 없다. 만약 그렇다면 사드는 1조5000억원 짜리 불량 사치품이나 다름없다.

좌파는 “전자파도 방사능처럼 장기간에 걸쳐 축적될 수 있다”는 으스스한 괴담도 빼놓지 않는다.하지만 세계 최고의 보건기구인 WHO의 입장은 다르다. 공식사이트를 통해 “기준치 이하의 고주파가 발열 위험이 있거나 건강 손상이 축적된다는 증거는 없다”며 못박아 놓았다. 기준치 이하의 사드 전자파라면 지나치게 겁 먹을 필요가 없다는 뜻이다. 이번에 공개된 사드보다 더 센 그린파인 레이더도 30m 떨어진 지점에서 전자파 수치가 인체 안전기준치의 4.4% 밖에 안 나왔다. 국립전파연구소는 "전자파가 인체에 미치는 영향은 거리의 세제곱에 반비례한다"며 "성주 주민보다 오히려 전기장판에 눕거나 고급차의 자동주행시스템 앞을 지날 때 더 많은 전자파를 쐴 수 있다"고 했다.

전략적 모호성과 군사보안 뒤에 숨어 사드 사태를 악화시킨 정부를 편들 생각은 없다.어쩌면 이번에도 광우병•제주 강정항•밀양송전탑 사태처럼 서울 광화문 시위까지 벌인 뒤에야 가라앉을지 모른다. 하지만 고질병으로 굳어지는 진보진영의 괴담은 문제다. 과학이론이나 WHO의 공식입장과 정반대로 치닫고 있다. 국립전파연구원은 "사드와 와이파이•블루투스는 모두 2~300GHz대역의 주파수를 쓴다"며 "안전기준치 이하면 별 문제 없다"고 했다. 결국 간사한 건 인간이다. 휴대폰의 와이파이•블루투스는 전파가 약하다고 난리고, 사드 전파는 너무 세다고 난리고....
