Korea Creative Content Agency (Kocca) has joined with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to help producers of cultural content turn their work into tangible products like toys or shoes.

The most touted case thus far has been CG Pixel Studio in Busan, which produces an animated series called “Kong Kong Land.”

The program centers on a group of “animal fairies”- including a parrot, panda, giraffe, penguin, crab, and chicken - that have been cursed, turned into shoes and booted from their homeland.

With the support provided by the government and Kocca, CG Pixel Studio now plans to manufacture actual shoes based on the characters.

“While most other studios have focused on turning their animated characters into toys, we have tried to focus on making shoes, which has never been seen in the animation industry before,” said an official at Kocca.

Park Dong-ju, president of the studio, said the project will have a positive effect on areas around Busan.

“We’re hoping to not only maximize the manpower we have in the area, but also contribute to boosting the presence of the the local shoe-making industry in the global market - all while we continue working on promoting our quality animations here in Korea,” said Park.

“Recently we have been working on incorporating the Internet of Things into the shoes we make, so that we can continue working with different industries on multiple levels in the future.”

The support for the animation studio reflects the growing influence that Korean animation has been having on the global market. Kocca said it considers children’s animations perfect for its “one source, many uses” approach, which takes one piece of cultural content and use it in many ways. In the case of an animated series, these include featuring the characters in everything from amusement parks to mobile games. Kocca plans to use the sector as an example of the way it can add value to the content companies are already producing.

“The idea of mixing the manufacturing industry with creative content, in this case the mix of the animation and shoe-making sectors, can be considered an innovative, experimental move to pioneer a new global market,” said the Kocca official.
