[앵커브리핑] ‘임금은 남한산성에 있다’

This is today’s anchor briefing.
"임금은 남한산성에 있다" 병자호란 청나라 오랑캐에 쫓겨 남한산성으로 피신한 인조.성안의 병사와 민초들은 혹한과 굶주림 속에 47일을 버텼고 그 결과는 역사가 기록한 그대로입니다. 명과 청의 대립 속에서 갈림길에 섰던 조선. 위명(爲明) 즉 명나라와의 의리를 지켜 청나라와 싸우느냐. 존국(存國) 즉 조선의 존립을 위해 청과 강화를 맺느냐17세기 병자호란이 일어나기 직전 조선의 조정은 그렇게 두 개의 세력으로 나뉘었습니다.
“The king is inside Namhan Mountain Fortress.” King Injo was evacuated to Namhan Mountain Fortress(Namhansanseong), fleeing from the armed forces of China’s Qing Empire invading the Joseon Dynasty. Rank-and-file soldiers and citizens endured freezing cold and starvation for 47 days inside the fortress and the aftermath is as historians recorded. Joseon was at the crossroads of a conflict between the Qing and the Ming empires. Would Joseon remain loyal to the Ming and oppose the Qing or would Joseon form an alliance with the Qing Empire for survival; the Joseon court was divided into two factions right before the Qing’s invasion in the 17th century.

지천 최명길. 당시 청나라와 강화를 주장했던 인물입니다. "백성을 어육으로 만들 수 없다"며 존국, 즉 주화의 길을 택했습니다. 동시에 도의를 저버린 매국노란 힐난을 감수해야 했지요.
Choi Myeong-gil, the interior minister at the time, sided with the pro-Qing Empire faction, stating, “We cannot let our people to become pieces of meat.” For that, Choi had to face with harsh criticisms of being a traitor to the country with no sense of moral principle.

최명길에 맞서 척화파를 이끌었던 청음 김상헌이 전쟁이 끝난 후 청태종의 공덕을 기린 비를 파손했다는 구실로 청나라로 끌려가며 읊은 시조입니다. 목숨을 걸고 선비의 지조를 지켰지만, 다시 고향땅 밟을 일이 그리 쉬워보이진 않았겠지요.
This is a poem that Kim Sang-heon, a scholar who led anti-Qing faction, composed when he was taken by force to the Qing Empire, which accused him of defacing the monument dedicated to Qing’s Emperor Hong Taiji’s accomplishments. Kim risked his life to keep his beliefs as a scholar but the chances of Kim going back to his home country were slim.

요즘으로 치면 G2 즉 두 개의 초강대국 명과 청 사이에서 살아남기 위해 몸부림쳤던 조선의 신세가 단지 수백 년 전의 일로만 생각되지는 않는 지금입니다. "우리가 중국에 나라라도 팔러 가는 것이냐" "중국의 입장을 강화하고 내부 분열 심화시킬 것이다” 사드 배치 문제로 한중관계가 뒤숭숭한 요즘, 방중길에 오른 6명의 더민주 의원들 때문에 정치권이 좀 시끄럽다고 하죠.
The fact that Joseon strove for survival, squeezed in between two super-powers, does not seem like only a historical one that happened hundreds of years ago. “Are we selling our country to China” or “It will strengthen China’s position and lead to an internal discord”; amid the tangled relations between South Korea and China due to the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system, people say that politics these days is vociferous because of six first-term lawmakers of the Minjoo Party of Korea, who traveled to China.

In a state where two opposing sides are clamoring for the best interests of the nation; if you think hard, the history seems to be repeating itself. “The king is inside Namhan Mountain Fortress.” This was supposedly a phrase that was repeated in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty during the 47 days in the fortress. However, I’d like to believe that our nation is not in as dire situation as it was back then.

그리고 오늘의 사족. 명과 청의 교체기에 명분과 실리 사이에서 조선의 미래를 고민했던 광해군. 훗날 전해지는 '광해군 일기'에는 이런 말이 기록돼 있습니다. "우리나라 사람들이 끝내는 반드시 큰소리 때문에 나라 일을 망칠 것이다" 이쯤에선 역사가 다시 반복되지 않기를 간구합니다.
Today’s food for thought: Gwanghaegun was contemplating the future of Joseon during the transition of the Ming Empire to the Qing Empire in China, whether to support one empire or the other. It was recorded in Gwanghaegun’s diary that “Our country will be brought to ruins because of outspoken people.” I hope that this particular bit of history will not repeat itself.
