Soo Ae skates to life in ‘Run Off’ : Unlike her stoic roles in the past, actress shows how excited she can get
Actress Soo Ae takes on her first sports film in “Run Off,” which was released Aug. 10 in theaters nationwide. [JOONGANG ILBO]
She plays Ji-won, an ice hockey player who defected from the North that - like most of the actress’ characters over the last decade - looks sweet but has a tough center.
But whereas earlier roles forced Soo Ae to be stoic and somewhat distant, Ji-won is full of life. Watching her glide over the ice in her huge uniform, face beaming, it’s clear that Soo Ae has many more sides to show.
For her part, the 37-year-old actress said that her strong performance in the film was “all thanks to the other five actresses” that starred alongside her.
To hear more about her latest role, M Magazine, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, recently sat down with the actress. Here are edited excerpts from that interview.
Q. This is your first sports movie. How did it go?
A. It was a challenge. I once thought I may not be the right fit for a sports film. So the biggest challenge was breaking the perception [that I couldn’t play such a role]. I drew inner strength and energy from meeting professional ice hockey players in person. It seemed like nothing can stop them from playing on the ice. I had to show something similar.
You did some action sequences in “Athena: Goddess of War” (2010-2011), in which you play a special agent. Which are harder: action films or sports films?
Of course, sports films. (Laughs.) I can’t compare the two. All I had to do in the “Athena: Goddess of War” was look good when I did the action scenes but I have to become Rhee Ji-won in “Run Off.” She had been dedicating her whole life to ice hockey. I trained for three months before shooting began.
“Run Off” is a human-centered sports movie with six characters who happen to join the team for different reasons.
It’s the first time I’ve done this kind of story with multiple characters. In addition, they are all actresses. Just like the characters, who gradually develop friendships as they go through harsh training, I thought it would take time for us to get closer but all of us became closer much earlier than I expected. I’ve never shared so many personal things on the set with other actresses before. This was a new experience for me in terms of acting, too. I used to be the one who led the whole story but this time, I had to watch others perform and assist them. I learned a lot as an actor.
Ji-won and the other characters all become a great team by the end. Were there any specific moments when you felt a special bond with the other actresses?
We couldn’t look into each other’s eyes when we did the wrap-up party after production ended because we didn’t want to cry. We had shared so many different feelings. We knew how hard it was to prepare the whole film and we talked to each other a lot about some difficulties of living as an actress. We shared many things with each other every day so it’s hard to pick just one special moment. Whether the film becomes a hit or not, we’ll pat each other on the back.
Audiences will surely feel how close you all got by the end of the film. I was impressed by how the facial expressions of you and other actresses changed behind your helmets depending on the scores.
We were like, “We must win” when we filmed the match scene.
This may become a spoiler so I can’t comment further but there’s a moment at the end of the film where something happens to Ji-won that really crystallizes the film’s message.
I had to maximize all my feelings for that scene. And that was the moment I felt my limitations as an actress.
Some actresses are very prolific, but you are not. Why is that?
I try to be cautious with whatever I do. Once I decide to do something, I really delve into it. So I try to find work that I can really enjoy. When I look back on the work I’ve done, I can visit myself in the past. I’m so happy that I can document my youth and time in that way.
What is your biggest asset as an actress?
People used to tell me that my eyes looked sad when I was in my 20s. I didn’t like to hear that. But now I think that kind of sad eyes make me who I am and are part of me.

‘단아하다’는 수식어가 따라다녔던 수애(37·사진)가 거치디 거친 아이스하키 선수로 변신했다. 10일 개봉한 영화 ‘국가대표 2’(김종현 감독)에서다. 8월 극장가에서 ‘덕혜옹주’(허진호 감독), ‘터널’(김성훈 감독)과 불꽃 튀는 접전을 벌일 영화다. 스키 점프 국가대표팀의 창단기를 다룬 스포츠영화 ‘국가대표’(2009, 김용화 감독)의 여성 버전 속편에 해당한다. 한국 최초의 여자 아이스하키 국가대표팀이 2003년 일본 아오모리 동계 아시안게임에 출전했을 당시의 실화를 모티브 삼았다.
평소의 고아함 대신 트레이닝복이나 묵직한 아이스하키 유니폼을, 향수 대신 땀 냄새를 걸친 수애는 이 영화에서 북한 국가대표 출신 아이스하키 선수 리지원 역을 맡았다. 각자의 사연을 안고 감독 대웅(오달수)이 이끄는 팀에 모인 여섯 선수(오연서, 하재숙 등)들은 고된 훈련을 거치며 하나가 되고, 손에 땀을 쥐게 하는 경기를 펼치며 열정을 불사른다. 개봉을 앞두고 만난 수애는 “이 영화를 통해 다섯 친구를 얻었다. ‘여배우’라는 의식을 버리고 함께 교감한 시간들에 감사한다”고 말했다.
Q : 스포츠영화는 처음이다.
A : “사람들이 내가 스포츠영화에 어울리지 않는다고 생각하면 어떡하나 걱정이 많았다. 그 선입견을 깨는 게 가장 큰 도전이었다. 영화를 준비하며 실제 선수들을 만나보니 온몸에서 어떤 강단이 뿜어져나왔다. 그런 모습을 보여주고 싶었다.”
Q : TV 드라마 ‘아테나: 전쟁의 여신’(SBS)에서 특수 요원 역을 맡아 액션 연기를 선보였다. 액션과 스포츠, 어느 쪽이 더 힘든가.
A : “당연히 스포츠다. 멋있게 보이는 게 중요했던 액션 연기와 달리, ‘국가대표2’에서는 운동밖에 모르고 살아온 리지원이란 인물 그 자체가 돼야 했다. 촬영전 석 달 동안 아이스하키 훈련을 받았다. 평소 인라인 스케이트를 즐겨 타긴 했지만 빙판 위에 제대로 서는 것부터 시작했다.”
Q : 극 중 리지원과 동료 선수들처럼, 배우들끼리도 팀웍이 중요했을 것 같다.
A : “이렇게 여러 명이 극의 전면에 나서는 작품이 처음이다. 등장인물들이 훈련을 거치며 끈끈한 사이가 되듯 배우들끼리도 가까워져야 했는데, 생각보다 훨씬 빨리 친해졌다. 촬영장에서 배우들끼리 이렇게까지 속 얘기, 비밀 얘기를 많이 나눈 것도 처음이다. 여배우들은 물론이고 오달수 선배도 ‘언니’라고 부르며 속 깊은 얘기를 나눴다. 여배우들끼리는 지금도 단체 모바일 메신저 창을 따로 만들어 수시로 대화한다. 개봉 성적을 기다리는 지금도 ‘혼자가 아니라 정말 다행’이라는 생각이 든다. 결과가 어찌되든 우리는 서로 격려하고 다 같이 기뻐할 테니까.”
Q : 결말에서 지원이 보여주는 애틋한 드라마가 극에 확실한 방점을 찍는다.
A : “감정을 120% 끌어올려 찍어야 했던 장면이다. 배우로서 연기 외적으로 한계에 부딪힌 순간이었다. 선배로서 상대 배우에게 힘을 실어주고 싶은데, 내성적인 성격 때문인지 그 마음을 어떻게 표현해야 할지 모르겠더라. 나는 누군가 나를 말 없이 믿어주는 눈빛으로 바라봐 줄 때 큰 힘을 얻는다. 나도 그런 격려를 전하고 싶었는데, 그게 잘 전달됐을지 모르겠다.”
Q : 수애만의 애절한 눈빛이 이 영화에도 보인다.
A : “난 평소에도 사람을 대할 때 눈빛에서 많은 걸 느낀다. 20대엔 ‘눈빛이 슬퍼 보인다’는 말을 들으면 나를 단정짓는 것 같아 싫었다. 지금은 그게 내가 지닌 어떤 모습이라는 생각이 든다. 그런 모습이 쌓여 ‘나’라는 사람이 완성되는 거 같다. 그렇게 아름답게 나이 드는 배우, 아니 사람이 되고 싶다.”
Q : 다작을 하는 편은 아닌데.
A : “원래 성격이 무슨 일이든 신중하게 시작하고, 하면 확실히 빠지는 편이다. 다작은 아니어도 지금까지 해온 작품들을 돌아보면 그 시간의 내가 보인다. 내 젊음과 시간을 그렇게 남기는 게 행복하다.”
Q : 이것만큼은 국가대표가 되고 싶은게 있다면.
A : “(한참 망설이다) 깊은 눈빛? 하하, 내 바람이다.”
