Defecting envoy from London is in South Korea

Thae Yong-ho, a North Korean diplomat who vanished from his post in London in mid-July, is in South Korea with his wife and children, the South Korean government announced Wednesday.

7월 중순 런던 주영 북한대사관에서 사라졌던 북한 외교관 태영호 공사가 부인과 자녀들을 데리고 남한으로 입국했다고 남한 정부가 수요일 발표했다.
The announcement of the arrival of the most senior diplomatic defector ever followed a flurry of media reports in Korea and abroad speculating over Thae’s motivation since his defection was first reported in the JoongAng Ilbo Tuesday.

중앙일보가 화요일 최초로 북한 고위 외교관의 탈북 사실을 보도한 이후 남한과 해외에서 탈북하게 된 배경에 관한 갖가지 추측이 난무하는 가운데 태 공사의 남한 입국 사실이 발표됐다. 태 공사는 지금까지 탈북한 외교관 중에서 최고위급이다.
“ Diplomatic minister Thae Yong-ho recently arrived in the Republic of Korea with his wife and children,” said Unification Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon-hee at a hastily arranged press briefing. “They are now in government custody.”

정준희 통일부 대변인은 급하게 마련한 기자회견에서 “태영호 공사는 부인과 자녀들과 함께 최근 대한민국에 도착했다”고 발표했다. “그들은 현재 대한민국 정부의 보호를 받고 있다.”
Jeong refused to go into details over the defectors’ motives or the route they took, citing diplomatic concerns.

정 대변인은 외교적 우려를 이유로 그들의 탈북 동기와 과정에 대해 자세히 설명하기를 거부했다.
Asked why Thae came to Korea instead of seeking asylum in a third country, as was widely reported previously, the spokesman refused to answer. In matters of defection, “third country” signifies a country that is neither North nor South Korea.

태 공사가 제3국으로 망명하지 않고 남한으로 오게 된 이유를 묻자 정 대변인을 답변을 거부했다. 발표 직전까지는 제3국으로 망명을 요청한 것으로 널리 보도됐었다. 탈북자에 관련돼서 “제3국”은 북한도 남한도 아닌 다른 국가를 의미한다.
Jeong also didn’t confirm how many children Thae and his wife brought with them or when the family arrived in the country. British media reported that Thae’s older son had a degree in the economics of public health from a British university and his younger son went to a public high school.

정 대변인은 남한에 입국한 태 공사의 가족 중에 자녀는 몇 명인지를 확인해주지도 않았다. 태 공사의 장남이 영국 대학교에서 공중보건 경제학으로 학위를 받았으며 차남은 공립 고등학교에 다녔다고 영국 언론이 보도했었다.
The younger son’s classmate was quoted by the Guardian as saying that his North Korean friend, who was reportedly born in Denmark and came to London four years ago, had vanished in mid-July and all his social network accounts went dark.

가디언은 차남의 급우가 그의 북한인 친구가 7월 중순에 사라졌고 그의 SNS 계정들이 모두 끊겼다고 말했다고 보도했다. 차남은 덴마크에서 태어났고 4년 전에 런던으로 온 것으로 알려졌다.
