Sports are a war without guns./ 스포츠는 총성 없는 전쟁과도 같다

The Olympic Games, in particular, tend to turn into a battle zone among nations./ 특히 올림픽은 국가 대항전 성격이 강하다

But the combative nature is just one feature of sports and the Olympiad./ 그러나 전투적인 속성은 스포츠와 올림픽의 속성 중 하나에 불과하다

We get great joy from the epic drama among athletes from around the globe, as a plethora of colorful events are unleashed on the sports fields./ 각양각색의 다양한 종목이 스포츠 분야에 도입됨으로써 전 세계에서 모여든 선수들의 환희의 드라마를 통해 우리는 큰 기쁨을 얻기도 한다

But our broadcasters focus entirely on the sports Korean athletes play at the Rio Olympics./ 하지만 우리 방송은 리우 올림픽에서 우리나라 선수들의 경기에만 주로 포커스를 맞추고 있다

The three major broadcasters — KBS, MBC and SBS — air almost solely sports events like archery and pistol-shooting in which Koreans have a high likelihood of winning gold medals./ KBS, MBC, SBS 3대 방송사는 한국 선수들이 금메달을 딸 가능성이 높은 경기인 양궁과 사격과 같은 종목만을 거의 방송하고 있다

As a result, local viewers are forced to settle with the same scene on different channels./ 결과적으로 국내 시청자들은 다른 채널을 틀어도 같은 방송을 보아야 한다

Once they are robbed of their choice in viewership, they must turn to foreign television channels or Internet sites to watch other performances of non-Korean athletes./ 일단 시청자들은 선택권이 빼앗기게 되고 할 수 없이 다른 나라 선수들의 경기를 보기 위해 외국 TV채널이나 인터넷 사이트를 찾게 된다

The three terrestrial broadcasters have paid a combined fee of 44 billion won ($40.2 million) to broadcast the Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil./ 3개 지상파 방송은 브라질 리우데자네이로에서 열리는 올림픽을 중계하기 위해 합계 440억원을 중계권료로 지불했다

But that money is apparently not to cover the performances of Korean athletes only./ 하지만 분명히 그 돈이 한국선수들의 경기만 중계하기 위한 것은 아닐 것이다

Mainstream broadcasters must coordinate airing the Games so that viewers can enjoy diverse sports events./ 주요 방송사들은 올림픽 경기의 중복 편성을 지양해서 시청자들이 다양한 스포츠 종목을 즐길 수 있도록 해야 한다

Some broadcasters have also come under criticism for sexist commentaries and remarks on television,/ 또한 일부 방송은 텔레비전 중계에서 성차별적인 해설과 표현으로 비판을 받고 있다

which runs counter to the zeitgeist of our time: gender equality and respect for humanity./ 양성평등과 인간존중이라는 오늘날의 시대정신에 위배되는/ One commentator exclaimed,/ 한 해설자는 외쳤다

“Isn’t it amazing for a female weight lifter to lift this heavy barbell?”/ “여자 역도 선수가 이 무거운 바벨을 들어 올린다는 것이 놀랍지 않습니까?”

Another one referred to a female judo competitor as playing tough while looking “soft” on the outside./ 또 다른 해설자는 여자 유도 선수를 보고 겉보기에는 “야들야들”한데 거칠게 경기를 한다고까지 말했다

It is shameful that sportscasters and commentators alike are all engaged in making sexist remarks during the broadcasts without finding any problem with it./ 스포츠 중계 아나운서나 해설자들이 아무런 거리낌 없이 방송을 하는 동안 성차별적인 표현을 하는 것은 부끄러운 일이다

There cannot be a male and female focus among athletes who are fighting for their national name./ 자신들의 국가 이름을 걸고 싸우는 운동선수들에게 남녀는 중요하지 않다

They have been chosen to represent their country after endless competitions against themselves and others./ 선수들은 자신은 물론 다른 선수들과 끊임없는 경쟁을 통해 국가를 대표하기 위해 선발되었다

Those players do not deserve condescending and rude remarks from commentators./ 이러한 선수들이 해설자들에게 안 좋은 말이나 무례한 표현을 들을 이유가 없다

If the media cannot catch up with the era of gender equality, they have no reason to exist./ 만약 미디어가 양성평등 시대를 따라가지 못한다면 방송이 존재할 이유가 없다

After the Olympic Games are over, Korean sports federations must consider holding gender equality education for the media so that they don’t make the same mistakes at the next Olympiad./ 올림픽이 끝난 후 스포츠 협회는 미디어를 대상으로 양성평등 교육을 시행하는 문제를 고려해서 다음 올림픽에서 같은 실수를 하지 않도록 해야 한다
