Ha shines in the dark with ‘Tunnel’: Actor talks about importance of staying positive in his hit film
Actor Ha Jung-woo says disaster blockbuster “Tunnel” tells a positive story in that it’s about overcoming a difficult situation and not dwelling in pain. [STUDIO 706]
The film is essentially a one-man show that allows the actor to shine, even as he’s trapped alone in the dark.
“Tunnel” tells the story of Jung-su, played by Ha, trying to survive after a tunnel suddenly collapses. His only possessions are a partially charged smartphone, two water bottles and a birthday cake he bought for his daughter.
In a recent interview with JoongAng Ilbo, Ha said he was attracted to the character because despite the dire circumstances, Jung-su remains positive. Through the character, director Kim Seong-hun manages adds moments of humor to an otherwise dark situation.
Still, Ha admits the film was quite an acting challenge.
“I realized once again that there’s nothing in life that’s free,” he said with his signature laugh.
The following are edited excerpts from that interview.
Q. What made you take on the role?
A. At first, I thought it was similar to “The Terror Live” (2013) [which also depicts a news anchor desperately trying to prevent a terror attack]. But it turned out that it was completely different. I was first impressed by the script, and then was attracted to the character. Jung-su. He’s not the type that just complains and weeps in pain. I thought I would be able to have fun playing him and leading the story.
Many people note how despite being a disaster film, there are also funny moments. What are your thoughts?
Yes. Five minutes after the film begins, a tunnel collapses and Jung-su is trapped. But he’s not just pessimistic. In fact, I think the whole film is about how a person overcomes a difficult situation, that kind of attitude, and not necessarily about a person’s pain and shock. It that sense, the story is a positive one. And I thought seeing Jung-su adapting to what’s available could be fun for people.
What was your chemistry like with director Kim Seong-hun? Did you like his sense of humor?
I talked to him frequently [before filming] and we clicked well. We have the same sense of humor and interests. For instance, in one scene Jung-su talks with a dog and shares dog food with it. And he says, “So you guys don’t like to season your food.” Also there is a scene where a clumsy rescue worker mistakenly tears the blueprint for the tunnel. As I read the script, I felt his wit and also saw chances for improvisation.
How did you feel about Jung-su? What kind of person is he?
He is proactive and has a strong will to live. But more importantly, he’s full of positive energy. In that sense, I could connect with him. When he’s told that someone will come and save him a week later, he believes it and tries to make it for a week. In a sense, he may seem gullible. But I’m sure considering the situation, those words gave him comfort and hope to carry on.
Wasn’t it hard filming by yourself, confined in a limited space?
I don’t count physical challenge and fatigue as “hard.” For me there’s nothing harder than not believing in the film that I’m in. When a director loses direction, no matter how good the actor’s performance is, the result cannot be good. I filmed six days a week; 12 hours a day. But the director led everything. That’s why I can say I had fun filming.
What’s your acting “style”? And what do you figure your biggest strength is as an actor?
I want to be a tool that best portrays a director’s intended colors. I don’t know what my acting style is, but I just want to play a helpful role to a film that I believe in either as a main or supporting character. I just want to bring to life the character the director created in the best way possible.

[고립된 상황 이겨 내는 '긍정 유머'의 매력, '터널' 하정우]
‘터널’은 ‘하정우의, 하정우에 의한, 하정우를 위한’ 영화다. ‘하정우’라는 배우의 능력치를 확인시켜 주는 ‘원맨쇼’라고 할까. 어둡고 좁은 터널에 홀로 갇혀, 무너진 파편들과 두 병의 물병 등 무생물과도 쿵짝이 잘 맞는 연기 호흡을 보여 준 하정우는 “이번 영화를 찍으면서 다시 한 번 세상엔 공짜가 없구나 느꼈다”며 ‘으하하하’ 호탕하게 웃음을 터트렸다.
-‘터널’의 어떤 점에 끌렸나.
“처음엔 ‘더 테러 라이브’(2013, 김병우 감독)와 비슷하다 느꼈다. 그런데 영화와 캐릭터 모두 전혀 다르더라. 단순하게 시나리오가 재미있었고, 마냥 힘들어하거나 고통스러워하지 않는 캐릭터라는 점이 매력적이었다. 즐겁게 연기하고, 재미있게 이야기를 끌고 갈 수 있겠다는 생각이 들어서 출연을 결정했다.”
-유머 코드가 많다는 게 다른 재난영화와 차별되는 지점인 것 같다.
“영화가 시작한 지 5분 만에 터널이 무너지고, 그 안에 정수가 갇힌다. 그런데 정수는 비관적이지만은 않다. ‘터널’은 인물의 고통과 충격, 고생에 포커스를 맞추기보다 힘든 상황을 극복해 나가는 태도, 즉 긍정적인 이야기를 하는 영화다. 정수가 어떻게든 살아남으려고 적응하는 지점에서, 관객이 이 영화에 재미를 느낄 거라 믿었다.”
-김성훈 감독의 유머가 잘 맞았나.
“김 감독과 자주 만나서 이야기를 나눴는데 말이 잘 통했다. 그리고 농담이나 유머 기호가 나와 비슷했다. 강아지와 대화를 나누고, 개 사료를 나눠 먹다 “니들은 간을 안 하는 구나”라는 대사를 한다. 이건 애드리브가 아니었다. 또한 영화 초반에 어리바리한 막내 구조대원(조현철)이 실수로 터널 설계도를 찢는 장면이 있다. 말맛이 살아 있고, 위트 넘치는 부분을 보며 ‘애드리브 할 수 있는 기회가 주어지면 저런 식의 코미디를 구사하면 되겠구나’ 생각했다.”
-정수라는 인물에 대해 어떤 감정을 느꼈나.
“적극적이고 삶에 대한 의지가 강하다. 그리고 긍정 에너지가 넘치는 인물이다. 그런 점에서 공감대를 많이 느꼈다. 무엇보다 정수는 ‘일주일 뒤에 구하러 오겠다’는 대경의 말에 의심도 않고, 어떻게든 일주일을 버텨 보려 노력한다. 한편으로 조금 바보같이 보일 수도 있지만, 정수가 처한 현실을 생각해 보면 그에겐 오직 ‘구하러 오겠다’는 말만 들렸을 것이다. 그 말에 위안받고 희망을 품을 수밖에 없었을 테니까.”
-좁은 공간에서 홀로 촬영하는 게 힘들지 않았나.
“육체적으로 고되고 피곤한 건 힘든 게 아니다. 영화에 확신이 없는 것만큼 괴로운 건 없는 것 같다. 감독이 방향을 잃고 우왕좌왕하면, 아무리 배우가 명연기를 펼쳐도 좋은 연기가 될 수 없다. 이번 영화는 일주일에 6일을 열두 시간씩 촬영했지만, 밀도 있는 진행이 가능한 시스템이었다. 정말 신나게 연기한 것 같다.”
-‘아가씨’(6월 1일 개봉, 박찬욱 감독) 때와 연기 스타일이 많이 달랐을 것 같다.
“박찬욱 감독은 대사의 토씨 하나 틀리지 않고 연기하길 원했다. 또한 단어의 장음과 단음까지 체크했다. ‘아가씨’가 캐릭터의 탈을 쓰고 정교하게 연기하는 재미를 느낄 수 있었다면, ‘터널’은 거칠지만 순간의 날것을 선택해 연기했다는 점에서 차이가 있다.”
-하정우 연기 스타일에 대한 기사가 많더라. 스스로 생각하는 자신의 개성이나 스타일은 무엇인가.
“나는 감독의 의도와 색깔을 최대한 소화해서 잘 표현하는 도구가 되길 바란다. 내 스타일은 모르겠고, 그저 영화에 좋은 보탬이 되고픈 주연 혹은 조연 배우 스타일이라 할까. 어떤 영화에서든 든든한 조력자이고 싶다. 감독이 만들어 낸 캐릭터를 최대한 잘 소화해 내고 싶은 마음이 크다.”
