'두테르테. 마약과의 전쟁 이기다' 며칠 전 필리핀에서 창간된 신문의 1면 머릿기사입니다. 신문에선 무자비한 공포정치와 막말로 악명 높은 대통령에 대한 비판은 찾아볼 수 없었습니다.
“Duterte wins the war against drugs.” This was a headline for a newspaper front page published by a Filipino newspaper that started publication just a few days ago. In the newspaper, there were no signs of any criticism of the president who is infamous for his reign of terror and his offensive statements.

알고 보니 이 신문은 바로 대통령 공보실에서 발행한 신문이었습니다. 정부가 국민 세금으로 선전에만 치중하고 있다는 비판이 나왔지만 정부는 아랑곳하지 않았습니다. 신문 온라인판의 제목은 '변화를 위한 뉴스'였습니다. 그 변화가 무슨 변화인지, 무엇을 위한 변화인지는 잘 모르겠지만 말입니다.
But it turns out that the newspaper was published by the public affairs office of the president. The people of the Philippines have criticized the government for using tax money to advertise policies, but the government did not seem to bat an eye. The online version of the article’s headline was called “news for change.” I cannot understand what that change is and what the change is for.

오늘(22일)의 앵커브리핑은 이를테면 '다시 저널리즘을 생각하기'입니다. 지난 주말과 오늘 사이 우병우 민정수석을 둘러싼 논란 속에서 청와대의 어느 인사는 이런 말을 남겼다고 하더군요. '일부언론 등 부패 기득권 세력과 좌파세력이 우병우 죽이기에 나섰다'
For today’s anchor briefing, we will delve into “rethinking journalism.” From last weekend until today, amidst the continuing controversy of Woo Byung-woo’s position as the senior civil affairs secretary to the president, a Blue House official has made this remark: “Corrupt establishments like some media outlets and the leftists are on a hunt for Woo Byung-woo.”

부패기득권세력이라 칭해진 그 일부 언론이 어디인지는 그냥 대중의 상상 속에 맡긴다 하더라도 아마도 이 말을 내뱉은 그는 언론의 속성을 너무 간과했거나 혹은 반대로 너무 잘 알고 있기 때문은 아닐까… 즉, 언젠가도 말씀드린 것처럼 이미 기득권이 된 저널리즘은 자신의 이익을 위해 자신이 속한 기득권 체제를 지키는 것이지 그 체제의 한시적 관리자를 지키는 것은 아니라는. 그래서 위정자들은 가끔씩 필리핀에서 나왔다는 소위 '변화를 위한 뉴스' 같은 신문이라도 만들고 싶은 유혹에 빠지는 것일지도 모르겠습니다.
We will leave which media outlets were branded as corrupt establishments to people’s imagination, but the Blue House official may have failed to understand the attributes of the media or, on the contrary, the official maybe knows too well media’s tendencies. Hence, just as I’ve mentioned before, journalism has already become an establishment. Journalism works to protect its own interest. Journalism does not work to protect the temporary managers of the establishment. And maybe that is why some politicians sometimes fall into the temptation to make so-called “news for change” like we saw in the Philippines.

이에 비하면 지난 주 한 기자가 쓴 칼럼의 내용은 차라리 덜 심각해 보일수도 있겠습니다. 그는 요즘 들어 영화보기가 고되다고 한탄했습니다. "'곡성'에서 신문은 경찰의 어설픈 수사 내용을 그대로 전달하는 무뇌적 존재… '부산행'에서 언론은 좀비를 폭도라고 보도하며 진실과 괴담을 맞바꾸고… '터널'에선 조난자의 위험은 아랑곳하지 않고 보도경쟁에만 매달리는 몰상식한 기자들…"
In comparison, perhaps a column written by a journalist last week may seem less serious. The journalist expressed his distress when watching some movies in theaters recently. “In movies like ‘The Wailing’ where newspapers are just brainless existences that just pass on a sloppy investigation details by the police to people. Or in ‘Train to Busan,’ where the media labels the zombies as a mob -- which is a far cry from truth. And even in ‘Tunnel,’ where reporters with a lack of common sense only care about getting exclusive coverage to beat their competition, instead of the people stranded in the tunnel.”

이 칼럼의 내용이 덜 심각하다고 말씀드린 것은 영화 속에 그려진 이런 정도의 과장은 지금 일어나고 있는 일에 비하면 그저 푸념 거리 정도에 지나지 않을 수도 있기 때문입니다.
The reason why I said the column seemed less serious is because all the exaggerations depicted on screen is nothing compared to what’s going on right now in the real world.
