[앵커브리핑] ‘금수저’가 아닌 ‘독수저’

가을이 오는 길목에서 편지 한 통을 받았습니다. 그는 베트남 건설 현장에서 일하는 노동자입니다.
With the autumn wind breezing in, I recently received a letter. It was from a laborer who works at a construction site in Vietnam.
과거에는 저의 라디오 방송 애청자이셨으니, 저는 아주 오래된 친구의 안부를 받아든 셈이죠.
He used to be an ardent listener of my radio program, so for me, it felt like a letter from an old friend.

“늘 40도를 웃도는 날씨와 사람만큼이나 많은 오토바이, 넉넉해 보이진 않지만 행복한 듯 밝게 웃는 사람들”
“The streets were filled with people on their feet or motorcycles, under the scorching heat above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Everyone seemed happy, even if they did not seem to be well off.”

그는 베트남 사람들의 모습 속에서 어릴 적 자신의 모습을 떠올렸다고 말했습니다.
He said that looking at the Vietnamese people reminded him of his childhood.
봉지국수를 사 들고 가면 멸치국물을 우려내고 있던 어머니.
The days when his mother prepared hot broth out of dried anchovies when he came back home with a bag of noodles he bought.

새끼줄에 엮어서 들고 가던 연탄 두어 장.
The days when the family used to bear the winter chills by burning coal briquettes.

행여 연탄가스에 중독될까 비닐 창을 조금 열어두곤 했던 그 시절…
The days when they left the window a bit open, to avoid anyone getting gas poisoning from the briquettes.

그는 꿈 많은 고등학생이었습니다.
He was a high school student full of dreams, back then.
“공고를 졸업하기 전 현장에 나가 받은 월급으로 월세에서 전세로, 다시 내 집을 사는 꿈을 꾸었고, 그 꿈들은 주변에서 하나 둘 현실로 보여졌다”는 것이지요. “그러나 지금은요?”
He said, “When I was a student, I dreamed of earning enough money to go from paying monthly rent to getting a lease, then from a lease to buying my own house. It seemed like it was possible back then. But is that so nowadays?”

반문하는 그의 눈은 지난 주에 전해진 뉴스를 향하고 있었습니다.
His doubtful eyes were probably looking towards last week’s news.
*doubtful: 의심을 품은
보통 사람들의 상식과 능력으로서는 불가능했을 그 많은 일들. 누군가에게는 그 모든 과정들이 너무나 손쉽게, 너무나 간단하게 주어졌습니다. 하긴 법에 위배되는 일이 있었다 해도, 언젠가부터 장관이 되는 것에는 별로 장애가 되지 않는다는 것을 우리는 그간의 경험을 통해 알고 있는 터입니다.
Things that would have been out of the reach of ordinary people were handed over so easily to some people. Even if those people went against the law, we all know from experience that it doesn’t really matter, especially when they become ministers by doing so.

누군가는 우리가 성직자를 뽑는 것은 아니지 않느냐고 볼멘소리를 했다지만. 그렇다면 최소한 공직자의 기준에는 맞아왔던가.
Some people pout that we’re not electing priests, but then, are these actions rightful for government officials?

“지금의 한국 공직자는 재앙이다.” 1세대 사회학자인 송복 교수의 말입니다.
The current officialdom of Korea is a total disaster,” said Song Bok, a first generation sociologist.

“윤리의식 없는 천민상층이 자신이 받고 있는 특혜를 인식하지 못하고 책임을 다하지 않고 있다.”
“The ‘untouchable’ upper class is not carrying out their duties, unaware of the privilege they are living with.”

노학자의 비판은 신랄했습니다.
The criticisms of the elderly scholar were like acid.
*acid: 신랄한, 매서운
그들이 갖고 있는 금수저는 금이 아닌 ‘독수저’이고, 그 치명적인 독성이 세상을 오염시키고 있다는 송 교수의 지적이었습니다.
Professor Song pointed out that the so-called “gold spoons”, or the family’s wealth one is born with, were not gold but “poisoned spoons”, contaminating the world with their deadly toxicity.

가난했던 그 시절에 품었던 “희망”을 추억하는 한 노동자의 긴 편지 글과 논란으로 점철된 새 장관 임명 소식이 교차됐던 오후. 그 논란 속에 있는 한 장관은 자신이 흙수저 출신이어서 무시당했다고 일갈했습니다.
The long letter reminiscing about the hopeful days arrived on an afternoon with news of newly appointed ministers dotted with controversy. To cap it all, one of those ministers flared up, claiming he’s been disregarded because of his “dirt-spooned”(the opposite of gold-spooned) background.
