[앵커브리핑] 미움과 측은함… 두 개의 판자문
오늘(19일) 날씨가 무척 좋았습니다.
The sky was very clear today (Sept. 19).
경기도 고양시의 가시거리가 무려 50km가 넘었다고 하지요.
I even heard that visibility in Goyang, Gyeonggi, was over 50 kilometers (31 miles).

이렇게 공기가 깨끗한 날에는 남산에서도 북한이 보일까… 사람들은 궁금해하곤 합니다.
On a clear day like today, people often wonder, “Will we be able to see North Korea from top of Mount Namsan?”
그래서인지 방송들은 전부터 날이 좋으면 서울 남산 위에 올라 개성 송악산을 찾아내서는 렌즈를 당기곤 했습니다.
Maybe that is why TV broadcasters climb up Mount Namsan on sunny days to capture and zoom in on the view of Mount Songak in Kaesong, North Korea.

For us, North Korea seems like somewhere we always want to check on, or go back to.

어제 저녁, 한평생 분단을 가슴 아파한 작가의 별세 소식이 전해졌습니다.
Last night (Sept. 18), author Lee Ho-cheol, who had been heartbroken throughout his life by the division of Korea, passed away.
*heartbroken: 비통해 하는 *division: 분단
그에게 있어 분단은 가로막힌 두 개의 얇은 판자문에 지나지 않았습니다. 그리고 우리의 마음 속에서도 북한을 떠올리면 바로 그 두 개의 문이 나타나곤 하지요.
For him, the division of the two Koreas meant nothing more than the two thin wooden doors standing between them. The two doors also pop into our minds when we recall North Korea.

다섯 차례에 걸친 핵 실험. 얼핏 통제할 수 없어 보이는 북한의 젊은 지도자는 또 다른 쪽에서 보면 매우 냉정하게 계산된 순서를 차근차근 밟아 나아가는 것처럼 보입니다.
With the recent fifth nuclear test by North Korea, it seems like its young leader is almost uncontrollable. But from another point of view, he seems to be making rational footsteps in an orderly way.

미움… 그러나 미움과 함께 열리는 또 다른 문이 있습니다.
One of the two doors indicates our hatred for the North Koreans. But standing next to it is a door with another meaning.

최악의 피해를 입었다는 함경북도. 맨손으로 돌멩이를 나르는 사람들의 모습은 마치 50년쯤 전에 초등학교 교과서에 나오던 그 모습들과 별반 다르지 않았습니다.
This is a photo taken in North Hamgyong, a North Korean region alleged to have been most severely affected by the recent flood. The reality of people having to carry the rocks with bare hands reminds us of photos in text books from at least 50 years ago.

측은함… 그 두 개의 문 중 어느 문을 열 것인가는, 우리도 아직 잘 모르겠다는 사람들도 많지요.
The other door indicates pity. When questioned which door we shall open, many answer they don’t know.

그래서 갈등하고 있는데, 오르내리는 사람들이 늘어나고 한솥밥 먹는 사람들이 늘어나면 물이 차오르듯, 남과 북은 만나리라던 작가에게 이 두 개의 문은 그저 열려야 할 문일 뿐…
We hesitate, but for the lateauthor, the reunification of North and South Korea was something that ought to happen naturally. He thought that as we visited each other and shared more, we would eventually become unified again.

“2백년쯤 뒤 판문점이란… 백과사전에는 이렇게 쓰일 것이다… 1953년에 생겼다가 19XX (천 구백 어느 해)에 없어졌다. 지금의 개성시의 남단 문화회관이 바로 그 자리다.”
“In about 200 years, the encyclopedia will read that Panmunjom the truce village between North and South Korea] was created in 1953 and gotten rid of in 19XX. It will indicate the place as where the culture center in Kaesong now stands.”

피난 떠난 지 일주일이면 돌아갈 수 있으리라 여겼던 작가의 희망은 적어도 천 구백 몇 년, 즉 20세기 안에는 이루어질 것이라 간구했지만, 세기를 넘겨 그가 먼저 가버렸습니다. 그의 별세 앞에서 ‘작가의 혜안은 통하지 않았으며 그것은 부질없는 소망이었다’고 말할 자, 누구인가.
When the late author fled south during the Korean War, he thought he would be able to go back home in a week. When this hope was cut, he wished he’d at least be able to go back in the 20th century. We now stand in the 21st century, bidding farewell to the author who left before reaching home. But who could label the author’s insights foolish, and his hopes futile?
