When will water smile back at us?

This is today’s anchor briefing.

“When you suffered from a mild fever, your friends said that they’re just dropping by but ended up staying by your side for three to four days.”

*fever: 열 *drop by: 잠시 들르다 *stay by one’s side: ~의 옆을 지키다

This is a quote from poet Park Jun’s poem, which he wrote after traveling around Namhan River, the landscape of which was changed by the four rivers restoration project.

The poet had originally planned to simply drop by the riverside, but couldn’t leave for days because he became so sad after laying eyes on the ruined river.

*riverside: 강변 *lay eyes on: ~를 보다 *ruined: 망가진

The water was confined and contaminated.

The cause of this tragedy is quite obvious, but those responsible disavow the accusation. The river no longer flows.

At the same time, people are beginning to fear the green algae blooming in the rivers.

Drinkable water is no exception.

There have been numerous reports of water purifiers letting out mucus-like substances instead of clean water. But the government only “ tentativelyconcluded that other than the confirmed models, water from all other water purifiers were just fine.

Those who have actually drunk the water even presented tangible proof that such was not the case, but the government still denied them.

And here’s another type of water.

The anchor briefing from 315 days ago quoted Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84.”

Like the two moons and two worlds the story depicts, we have two groups of people who breathe the same air, but live different lives. On the night farmers and officers clashed 317 days ago, an old farmer collapsed when the police aimed a powerful streak of water at him.

The government, which had been silent while the public called for a probe into the case for over 300 days, is now requesting an autopsy following the death of the man on Sept. 25.

When two farmers died during a rally 11 years ago, the opposition Grand National Party requested the president to immediately apologize for the case. The party’s successor Saenuri Party is now the ruling party. Is it because times have changed? Or is it because the tables have turned? The government is now being condemned for turning a deaf ear to the death of a citizen.

*rally: 집회 *apologize: 사과하다 *ruling party: 여당 *The table is turned.: 상황이 바뀌었다. *condemn: 비난하다 *turn a deaf ear to: ~에 귀를 기울이지 않다

Since when was water this cruel, this terrifying? Since when was it feared so much by the public that it made them cry?

The world that the late man had wanted during his 70 years of life would not have been like this.

It would have been one in which people try to accept the differences of others and harmonize as one, like water usually does.

But our water still suffers from a mild fever, and we just cannot leave its side.

When will water smile back at us?
