This is what Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe blurted out when asked whether he has the intention of writing an apology letter to comfort women.

이 말을 전해 들으면서 저는 엉뚱하게도 쓰레기는 커녕 낙엽 한 장 눈에 띄지 않았던 일본의 길거리를 떠올렸습니다.
Strangely, his words reminded me of the awfully neat streets in Japan, where not even a fallen leaf could be spotted.

때때로 부러웠던 감정을 가졌지만 이제 비로소 느껴지는 일종의 결벽증…
I sometimes envied their tidiness, but now I sense that it is something closer to germophobia.
*envy: 부러워하다 * tidiness: 청결, 정돈 *germophobia: 결벽증
피해자에 대한 일말의 죄의식이나 책임감조차도 그것이 정치적인 의미를 갖는 순간 철저하게 거부해야 한다는 아베의 생각 역시 어찌 보면 왜곡된 결벽증이 아닌가…
For the prime minister, even a touch of guilt or responsibility should be firmly denied the moment it starts to have political meaning. This, to me, looks like a distorted form of germophobia.
*guilt: 죄책감 *firmly: 단호히 *deny: 부인하다, 거부하다 *distorted: 왜곡된
그래서 털끝만큼도 없다는 저…결벽을 넘어 오만으로까지 비쳐지는 일갈은 섬뜩함을 느끼게도 합니다.
Hence his words reading “not even a speck,” seem like germophobia, no, more like arrogance, and bring chills down my spine.
*arrogance: 오만 *bring chills down one’s spine: 간담을 서늘하게 하다
그리고 요 며칠…우리는 또 다른 일본을 보고 있습니다.
And over the past few days, we’ve been seeing the other side of Japan.
하기사 처음 보는 모습은 아닙니다만…노벨 생리의학상을 받은 오스미 요시노리 교수는 이렇게 말했습니다.
In fact, it’s not the first time seeing Japan like this, but anyhow, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese biologist who received Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, said,

"남들과 경쟁하기는 싫었다…"

그래서 자신은 인기 없는 분야에 외골수로 파고 들 수 있었다는 고백이죠.
implying that is the reason that he went into an unpopular branch of study.

외골수…그들이 얘기하는 '헤소마가리' 정신…하긴 일본은 어쩌면 외골수들이 이끌어 가는 나라지요. 가업도 대를 잇고, 연구도 대를 이어 파고들어서 대가를 이루는 사회.
The spirit of so-called “hesomagari,” or stubbornness, is perhaps what rules Japan. They dig into everything, whether it be family businesses or studies, and become gurus in certain fields.
*spirit: 정신 *stubbornness: 고집 *family business: 가업 *guru: 권위자, 전문가
그런데 사실 이런 외골수가 가능하게 하는 것은 어쩌면 오스미 요시노리 교수의 그 고백 속에 답이 있는 것이 아닌가…
But maybe the reason why stubbornness is prevalent in Japan is quite obvious, if we take a look at Dr. Ohsumi’s words.
*quite: 꽤, 상당히 *obvious: 명백한
즉, 경쟁하기 싫으면 경쟁하지 않고 인기가 없는 분야라도 파고 들 수 있게 해준 다시 말해 외골수가 통하는 그 사회의 풍토 말이지요.
His words imply that being stubborn works well in Japanese society, which encourages people to dig into unpopular fields if they do not wish to compete with others.

생각해보면…사과할 생각이 털끝만치도 없다는 아베의 역사인식, 정치인식도 변형된 외골수가 아닐까…
Come to think of it, the historical or political perception of Abe, who said he didn’t have even a speck of willingness to apologize, might also be a form of stubbornness.

때로는 노벨상으로, 때로는 피해국이나 피해자에 대한 오만함으로 나타나는 이런 외골수에 그래서 한 번 더 섬뜩해집니다.
Through Nobel Prizes or arrogance towards those they’d done wrong, we’re able to spot Japan’s stubbornness, and it sometimes even frightens me.
*spot: 발견하다 *frighten: 겁먹게 하다, 놀라게 하다
그리고… 우리에게 전해진 소식… 소위 명문이라는 외고에서 전교 1, 2등을 다투던 여학생이 경쟁이 싫어 학교를 그만둔 뒤 9급 공무원에 합격했다지요.
Also, a teenage girl, who was at the top of her elite high school, recently passed the civil service exam after quitting school. She said her choice lies in her unwillingness to compete with others.

학생의 결정과 장도에 무한한 격려를 보냅니다만…
I send much encouragement to her decision and future,

요시노리 교수나 우리의 여학생이나 모두 경쟁을 싫어한 것은 맞는데…오늘 일본을 다시 보자니 우리의 여고생이 애틋하게만 느껴지는 저녁입니다.
but it seems like both the teenage girl and Dr. Ohsumi wanted to evade competition. And with Japan in mind, I sense a bit of pity for the girl.
