‘My Refrigerator’ is 100 episodes old : Despite a chaotic start and loss of co-host, show just keeps on cooking
JTBC cooking show “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator” celebrated its 100th episode. [JOONGANG ILBO]
The show pits top chefs against each other for 15 minutes to see who can best cook for weekly celebrity guests using whatever’s in their refrigerator. The celebrity’s refrigerator is actually hauled into the television studio. While the program was originally expected to last only three months, it has reached its 23rd month on-air and sparked a nationwide trend of cooking entertainment. It created “cheftainers,” a term coined to describe the humorous watchability of chefs cooking on television.
“I’m emotionally overwhelmed,” said Sung Hee-sung, the show’s producer, in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “At a time when variety shows have such short life spans, it makes me incredibly happy that we’ve reached 100 episodes.”
“We didn’t expect much in the beginning,” Sung continued. “Our program had a format in which content availability was limited. There were questions about the originality of the dishes, and limitations in regards to guests and their refrigerators. Both the hosts and chefs are incredibly happy that we have made it this far.”

“Luckily, we were able to cast Zhang Yuan and Robin at the last moment thanks to our connections. The contents of their refrigerators made it simple for us to explain our program to our audience, and the first episode ended satisfyingly.”
The show, however, experienced a crisis at the peak of its popularity. One of the show’s hosts, comedian Jung Hyung-don, stepped down due to an anxiety disorder.
“Looking back on it, we really went through tough times,” said Sung. “I think every program goes through its own crises, whether it is problems with the cast or viewer reception.
“It was a challenge trying to find the right successor for Jung,” he continued. “Jung played a vital role to the success of the program, and we initially had his image in mind when we were creating the show.”
After having multiple special guests take on hosting duties, the producer eventually settled on former Korean soccer star Ahn Jung-hwan as the new host.
“Ahn brought something different to the table, and we were lucky to find him,” said Sung. “In retrospect, it was a chance for us to shake things up even during our moment of crisis.”
Sung is totally grateful to entertainer Kim Sung-joo, the co-host, for watching over the show from the beginning.
“I’m truly thankful to him,” said the producer. “We run the cameras for ten to twelve hours on average and Kim keeps everybody entertained the entire time. He lies motionless from fatigue during the breaks, but when we start shooting, he jumps back to life. He is a true professional.”
Sung attributed the show’s success to the hard work of the hosts and chefs. “The production team merely set the stage for them to shine,” he said. “It was thanks to their ability to rise above everybody’s expectations that we have been able to last until now.”

[100회 인터뷰①] '냉부해' PD "100회 감개무량…1회 녹화 게스트 없어 멘붕"

JTBC '냉장고를 부탁해'가 100회를 맞았다.
"딱 3달만 버티자"는 생각으로 시작했던 프로그램이 무려 23개월을 버텨내며 월요일 대표 예능 프로그램으로 자리를 잡았다. 쿡방 전성시대를 이끌었고 '셰프테이너'란 신조어를 탄생시키며 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.
'냉장고를 부탁해' 성희성 PD는 7일 진행된 일간스포츠와의 인터뷰에서 100회를 맞은 소감에 대해 "요새 같이 예능의 수명이 짧은 상황에서 100회까지 끌고 온 게 진짜 기쁘다. 감개무량하다"고 운을 뗐다.
성 PD는 "솔직히 몇 번 안 한 것 같은데 벌써 100회다. 그간 여러 일도 있었는데 '처음에 12번만 버티자'는 게 목표였다. 큰 기대감은 없었다. 한계가 많아 보이기도 한 포맷이었다. 냉장고 섭외부터 과언 뻔한 냉장고 안에서 얼마나 다양한 요리가 나올 것인가 의문이 많았다. 그런 생각으로 시작했는데 100회가 됐다. 100회 녹화가 끝나고 MC들이나 셰프들이나 다들 감격스러워하더라"고 말했다.
1회 녹화 당시를 잊을 수 없다는 성 PD. "시작부터 꼬이는 게 많았다. 스튜디오 녹화 스케줄도 갑자기 엉키는 바람에 녹화 며칠 앞두고 외부 스튜디오로 옮겨 녹화했다. 제일 문제였던 건 녹화 며칠 전까지 게스트 섭외가 되지 않았다. 집에 있는 냉장고를 공개하는 일인데 어느 누가 쉬웠겠나. 이젠 말할 수 있는데 그때 임정아 CP의 도움으로 장위안과 로빈을 섭외해서 녹화를 진행했다. 그런데 아무것도 모르고 나온 그 2명이 우리 프로그램의 취지를 명확하게 설명해줄 수 있는 냉장고 구성이었다. 리얼한 냉장고에서 재밌는 토크가 자연스럽게 나오기 시작하는데 첫 녹화 내용이 무척이나 만족스러워 잘 될 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다"고 회상했다.
성희성 PD는 1회부터 100회까지 자신의 자리를 우두커니 지켜준 김성주에 대한 고마움을 잊지 않았다. 누구보다도 고맙다면서 감사함을 표했다. "너무 고맙다. 우리 녹화가 기본 10시간에서 12시간 정도 하는데 정말 그 시간 내내 쉴 새 없이 떠든다. 쉬는 시간엔 넋이 나가서 뻗는데도 '슛'하면 또 열심히 한다. 진정한 프로다"라고 치켜세웠다.
성 PD는 "김성주는 '냉장고를 부탁해'에 대해 애정이 많다. 하다못해 농담으로라도 목관리 수당으로 돈을 더 줘야 하는 거 아니냐고 너스레도 떤다.(웃음) 목관리 수당은 따로 주지 못하지만 프로그램의 방향타 같은 역할을 계속해주고 있어 너무 고맙다. 하지만 가끔 힘들어하는 모습을 보면 애잔하기도 하다"고 말해 눈길을 끌었다.
김성주는 2014년 11월 17일 첫 방송된 '냉장고를 부탁해'에 정형돈과 함께 투MC를 소화, 쿡방의 전성시대를 이끌었다. 다년간의 경기 중계로 익힌 긴박감 넘치는 김성주표 진행은 대결구도의 묘미를 한층 높였고 정형돈, 안정환과의 훈훈한 '남남케미'를 자랑하며 존재감을 드러내고 있다.
프로그램 인기의 공 역시 MC들과 셰프들에게 돌렸다. 성 PD는 "김성주, 정형돈 그리고 셰프들 덕분에 프로그램이 잘 될 수 있었다. 제작진은 판만 깔아줬다. 녹화 때마다 '오늘도 신나게 놀다 가요' 이렇게 부담 없이 시작하는데 지금까지 출연했던 셰프들이 기대 이상으로 잘해줬고 MC들도 생각보다 진행을 너무 잘해줬다. 제작진이 차려놓은 틀 안에서 생각했던 것 이상으로 잘해줘서 100회까지 방송을 이어올 수 있었다"고 전했다.
정형돈 하차에 따른 위기를 극복한 것에 대해 성PD는 이렇게 말했다. "[정형돈은] 프로그램의 큰 축이었다. 대안을 만드는 게 쉽지 않았다. 그런 상황에서 스페셜 MC들이 선방해줬다. 그 덕분에 안정환도 찾을 수 있었다. 안정환은 정형돈과는 또 다른 매력을 자랑하며 새로운 활력을 넣어줬다. 지금 생각해보면 위기 속에서 변화를 모색할 수 있는 기회였다."
