Last weekend’s episode of the TV program “The Its Know” centered on the death of Baek Nam-gi, who died after being hit by water from a water cannon.

But at least on that day, it seemed like their violence was getting out of control, like that of the Leviathan from the Old Testament.

Also, the conflict between the nation and the people concerning the autopsy of Baek Nam-gi was full of contradictions.

영장을 받았으니 집행하겠다는 경찰과 이를 막고선 유가족들 사이에 그 어떤 타협의 공간은 존재하지 않아 보입니다.
The police say they’re going to carry out the autopsy since they’ve received the warrant, while the family of the deceased strongly opposes it.

그리고 오늘(24일) 박근혜 대통령은 국회 시정연설에 나섰습니다.
Meanwhile, President Park made a speech at the National Assembly today (Oct. 24).

최순실, 정유라, 미르재단, K스포츠 재단, 그리고 백남기… 대통령으로부터 듣고 싶은 말은 사실 많았습니다.
The people wanted to hear about various current issues, like Choi Soon-sil, Chung Yoo-ra, the Mi-R Foundation, the K-Sports Foundation, or Baek Nam-gi.
물론 이미 답을 내놓은 사안도 있었지만, 시민사회가 국가로부터 무엇인가를 늘 더 듣고 싶어 하는 것은 마치 숨 쉬듯 자연스러운 것이니까요.
Of course, questions regarding some of these issues have already been answered by the nation, but after all, it is very natural for the people to ask questions to the nation.
그리고 그 앞에 던져진 개헌이라는 화두.
But in the speech, the president brought up a whole new topic of amending the constitution.

국민들의 공감대는 이미 형성됐다는 전제에 동의하더라도 '갑자기 지금 왜?'라는 자문이 그 전제에 앞선다면, 앞으로 있을 길고 긴 시간, 개헌을 위한 토론과 합의의 지난한 과정은 어느만큼 정당화될 수 있을 것인가.
Of course, it’s an important issue, but if the question of “Why now?” pops up beforehand, it seems like it will become even more difficult to go through the prolonged debates regarding the constitution.
