Suspicious coordination (국문)

Choi Soon-sil, the longtime friend of President Park Geun-hye who has caused a national uproar for suspected abuses of unauthorized power and meddling in state affairs, has returned home from overseas.

Other figures implicated in scandals related to Choi also have turned themselves in to prosecutors, raising suspicions that they might be acting upon some kind of plan.

Choi arrived at the Incheon International Airport early Sunday on a flight from London. Her lawyer issued an apology on her behalf and relayed her promise to answer prosecutorial questioning with sincerity. But the lawyer pleaded to the prosecution to give her a day or so to collect herself from a long trip citing her fragile health. Prosecutors said they could wait, but politicians called for immediate arrest and investigation.

Choi reportedly changed her mind and has decided to hurry back home amid snowballing allegations and rumors around her. Her close associate Ko Young-tae, who has been managing Choi’s company, also returned from overseas and has been undergoing questioning from prosecutors.

Former presidential speechwriters and employees of the foundations Choi created also have been complying with investigations. Cha Eun-taek, an advertising producer and key figure in the scandal, has also offered to return from China to answer questions from prosecutors.
The sudden compliance raises suspicions that Choi and her associates could be following orders from someone powerful coordinating with the prosecution.

If all this is to buy the suspects’ time to coordinate their testimonies or hide some kind of truth, the public will become even more outraged.

Many of the allegations have already become undeniable due to hard evidence such as the leakage of presidential documents through media reports.

The presidential office and prosecution could face a strong backlash if they try to turn the scandal into individual wrongdoings and excesses.

The prosecution is already in hot water for dragging its feet on the probe procedures. Why it did not immediately arrest Choi remains questionable. All eyes are on the prosecution and how intent it is to uncover the truth.

‘국정농단’ 의혹을 받고 있는 최순실씨가 어제 전격 귀국했다. 이번 사태의 핵심 인물들이 속속 귀국하고 검찰 조사에 응하면서 모종의 시나리오가 진행되는 것 아니냐는 의구심이 고개를 들고 있다.
최씨는 어제 오전 7시30분 영국 런던 발 항공편으로 인천공항에 입국했다. 이어 그는 변호인 기자회견을 통해 사죄 및 검찰 출석 입장을 밝혔다.
“검찰 수사에 적극 순응할 것이며 검찰에 나가면 있는 그대로 진술하겠다”는 것이다. 그러면서 “건강이 좋지 않고, 장기간 여행, 시차 등으로 매우 지쳐 있는 만큼 하루 정도 몸을 추스를 수 있는 시간적 여유를 달라”고 검찰에 요청했다. 기자회견 직후 검찰은 “오늘은 소환할 계획이 없다”고 말했다. 이에 대해 여야는 "최씨를 즉각 체포해 조사하라"고 한 목소리를 냈다.
당초 귀국에 부정적인 입장을 보였던 최씨가 귀국하기로 마음을 돌린 건 갈수록 커지고 있는 의혹에 대응하기 위한 것으로 보인다. 특히 최씨의 최측근인 고영태 더블루K 이사가 지난 27일 귀국해 검찰에 자진 출석한데 이어 조인근 전 청와대 연설비서관의 공개 해명, 재단 관계자들의 검찰 출석 등이 쉴 새 없이 이어지고 있다. 중국으로 출국해 잠적 상태였던 차은택 CF감독도 “귀국해 검찰 조사를 받겠다”고 했다. 누군가 최씨 등의 귀국과 검찰 출석을 조율하고 있는 듯한 인상을 주고 있는 게 사실이다.
만약 서로의 진술을 꿰맞춰 사건을 축소하거나 진실을 은폐하는 시간을 벌려는 것이라면 시민들의 불신과 분노는 더 커질 수밖에 없다. 이미 대통령 연설문 등 청와대 문건들과 언론 취재 내용을 통해 사건의 성격과 윤곽이 상당부분 드러나 있는 상태다. 청와대나 검찰이 과거처럼 ‘개인들의 일탈’로 몰아갈 경우 그나마 남은 조직의 존재 이유마저 부정하는 결과가 될 것이다.
그간 검찰은 최씨 의혹을 놓고 미적거리만 하다가 여론의 비판을 받았다. 왜 바로 최씨 신병을 확보해 조사에 나서지 않는지 납득할 수 없다. 검찰이 얼마나 제대로 진상 규명 의지를 갖고 수사에 임하는지 시민들은 지켜볼 것이다.
