Music programs are forced to evolve : ‘Super Star K’ started the TV trend, but viewers are bored of mere singing

When Mnet’s “Super Star K,” the Korean version of “American Idol,” started attracting pop star wannabes in 2009, it was a sensation. Everyone was aware of its top contestants and how they were doing. The program’s popularity multiplied as the following seasons produced new potential stars and discovered truly talented singers. The music industry cashed in as these new artists took off singing in a range of genres.
After its first four successful seasons, introducing now well-known artists like Seo In-guk, Huh Gak, Busker Busker and Roy Kim, Super Star K hoped to carry on. But in 2013, the fifth season failed to create much buzz, and the program’s ongoing eighth season is earning a viewership rating of only 1.2 percent, according to Nielsen Korea.
Part of the reason for its slump is the introduction of similar programs, including SBS’ “K-pop Star,” Mnet’s “The Voice of Korea,” MBC’s “Star Audition: The Great Birth,” which all started between 2010 and 2012. The sixth season of “K-pop Star” will be its last. “Star Audition: The Great Birth” ended with its third season in 2013.
“The overabundance of similar music programs led to the fall of the genre itself,” said Jang Deok-hyeon, an expert on pop culture.
“I Am a Singer” was a sensation when it premiered in 2011. It ended up introducing such vocalists as Park Jung-hyun, Yoon Do-hyun and Yoon Min-soo. But soon copycats arose, once again leading to a fall in ratings for all the shows.

“Fantastic Duo,” a similar program by SBS featuring Yoon Sang, Kim Bum-soo and others, is also coming to an end this month. Its first show was in April. According to SBS officials, a second season of the show will be produced, although no specifics have been released on it.
Programs that have greater staying power are Mnet’s “Show Me the Money” and “Unpretty Rapstar,” which narrowed down their musical genres to hip-hop, and “Produce 101,” a survival program in which finalists get to form a girl group.
Now that viewers are demanding more unique elements in music programs beyond singing, new shows are trying to satisfy that demand.
“Melody to Masterpiece” on tvN is a competition between two teams consisting of producers, singers and session musicians who rearrange existing songs. The program is focussed on the process of completing a single song. JTBC’s “Sing For You” is also about creating new songs based on a given story.
Attempts to embrace unique genres are also a trend. JTBC’s “Phantom Singer” differentiates itself from other shows by focussing on classical music. The show gathers numerous vocalists and musical actors and chooses four to form a quartet. “Pan Stealer” from Mnet is focused on gugak, traditional Korean music, casting not only popular entertainers like KangNam but also gayageum (traditional zither) player Lee Ha-nui and daegeum (bamboo flute) player Jung Yo-han.
“Music is not only singing, but includes other various elements,” said Jang. “Many upcoming music programs will try to utilize and apply those elements.”

노래만 불러선 식상…음악예능 변해야 산다
음악예능의 판도가 달라지고 있다. SBS가 지난 4월 자신있게 내놓은 ‘보컬 전쟁: 신의 목소리’를 4개월 만에 폐지한 데 이어 ‘판타스틱 듀오’ 역시 오는 20일 막을 내린다. SBS 관계자는 “‘판듀’는 원래 시즌제라 폐지 아닌 종영”이라면서도 “시즌2의 구체적인 제작 계획은 아직 정해지지 않았다”고 밝혔다.
같은 달 시작한 MBC의 ‘듀엣가요제’ 역시 시청률 하락세를 보이면서, 기성 가수들과 일반인이 경연하거나 한 팀으로 공연하는 형식이 더 이상 시청자들에게 소구하지 못하고 있다는 평가가 나오고 있다. 박정현•윤도현•윤민수 등 2011년 MBC ‘나는 가수다’부터 단골로 나오는 출연진 역시 음악예능을 비슷하게 보이게 만들고 있다.
2009년 시작돼 음악예능의 새 장을 연 Mnet ‘슈퍼스타K’도 부진하기는 마찬가지다. 이번 시즌에는 심사위원 수를 7명으로 대폭 확대하며 새단장했지만 출연자 김영근 외에는 별다른 화제몰이를 하지 못하고 있다. 오는 20일부터 일요일 밤 9시대로 옮겨 시작하는 SBS ‘K팝스타’ 역시 유사 포맷 범람으로 인한 피로도가 쌓인 상황.
그나마 선전하는 프로는 MBC ‘복면가왕’과 Mnet ‘너의 목소리가 보여’ 정도다. 누가 노래를 더 잘하는지에 포커스를 맞추지 않고 복면과 립싱크소재를 활용해 숨어있는 진짜 주인공을 맞추는 게임적 요소를 더해 성공했다.
아니면 특정 장르에 집중한 것이 역으로 보편성을 얻는 토대가 되어주기도 했다. Mnet 힙합 서바이벌 프로그램 ‘쇼 미 더 머니’와 ‘언프리티 랩스타’, 걸그룹 탄생기를 보여준 ‘프로듀스 101’이 대표적이다.
상황이 이렇다 보니 음악예능은 변화하지 않으면 살아남을 수 없는 정글이 됐다. 자연스레 노래를 부르고 듣는 데 그치지 않고 노래를 만드는 과정을 보여주는 등 다양한 시도들이 이뤄지고 있다.
가장 먼저 메이킹 예능의 포문을 연 것은 tvN의 ‘노래의 탄생’이다. 하나의 원곡을 두고 프로듀서•보컬•세션이 두 팀으로 나눠 45분간 편곡 대결을 펼치는 형식이다. 프로듀서 윤상, 조정치 외에 못 다루는 악기가 없는 멀티악기 연주자 권병호 등 다양한 세션들이 등장해 노래 한 곡이 완성되기까지 보컬 외에도 얼마나 많은 손이 필요한지 보여준다.
JTBC ‘싱 포 유’ 역시 사연을 토대로 만든 창작곡으로 공감지수 대결을 펼치는 콘셉트로 다음달 첫방송을 준비 중이다.
힙합에서 시작된 장르 열풍은 국악과 클래식 등 전통 영역까지 번졌다. 11일 시작하는 JTBC ‘팬텀싱어’는 대한민국 최고의 남성 4중창 그룹을 결성하는 방식으로 차별화를 꾀했다. 가요 일색의 오디션 프로그램과는 달리 테너•베이스•바리톤•카운터테너 등 음역별 심사를 통해 성악•클래식•재즈 등 다양한 장르를 오가는 크로스오버적 시도로 듣는 재미를 만족시키겠다는 포부다.

정덕현 대중문화평론가는 “케이블에서 시작된 음악예능이 지상파에서 유사한 형태로 쏟아져 나오면서 트렌드 자체가 함몰되는 경향이 있다”며 “음악에는 노래 외에도 여러 다양한 결이 존재하는 만큼 이를 프로그램에 담으려는 시도는 계속될 것”이라고 전망했다.
