Back to Democracy

This is today’s anchor briefing.

Korea ranks first out of all OECD countries in suicide rate, poverty rate of the elderly, and the wage gap between men and women. We mark lowest in birthrate, the period workers stay with the same job and social relations.

(Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) *suicide rate: 자살률 *poverty rate: 빈곤율 *wage gap: 임금 격차

Some may say we are only emphasizing the bad things, but the good things don’t mean much if these problems are left unsolved.

Why do nations exist? What is a good nation?

According to what we learned in school about Thomas Hobbes’ Social Contract Theory, humans chose to live as social beings to avoid loneliness and anxiety, though they could’ve lived in nature as individuals.

Hence we cede some of our freedom and rights to this community called ‘nation,’ which in return secures our life and safety. This is why nations exist.

In order to form a great nation, we chose to be a democratic republic based on the Constitution.

For the past month, we have gone through much shame, humiliation and rage. So many cases of Choi Soon-sil being involved in state affairs have been revealed, making it almost impossible to list all of them.

Yes, maybe it’s even impossible to take care of all suspicions cast on the issue. The president said it was just a bit of help from an acquaintance, and her words led us to fear for our nation’s future.

Politicians say this week will be crucial. The media busily make their predictions, but that’s only meaningful from a purely political point of view.

*crucial: 중대한 *the media: 언론

Citizens gathered in the streets for the rally call for a new vision to reconstruct our damaged democracy. This is what the people ask of the political world.

Only after then will we be able to grow away from this list of bad things.

That’s why we can only lay our hopes on this motto: “Back to democracy,”

*lay one’s hope on: ~에 희망을 걸다 *motto: 표어

even here in Korea which author Kang Won-sang said was “the perfect place for ‘Choi Soon-sil and her bunch’ to live.”

This is all for today’s anchor briefing.
