Anchor Briefing 1119

The JTBC program “Today” will not air today (Nov. 14).

It was about tomorrow’s meeting between President Park Geun-hye and Minjoo Party Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae, which was abruptly cancelled this evening.

We will begin with today’s anchor briefing right away.

Today, the moon is going to be the closest it has been to the earth in 68 years.

For those who haven’t reached 70, this will be their biggest moon in their lives.

Hence many are expected to stay up late to take a glimpse at the enticing moon.
*stay up late: 늦게까지 자지 안고 있다 *take a glimpse at: 잠깐 보다 *enticing: 유혹적인

Also, last weekend, the lights shined so brightly it kept us awake.

That night, when we couldn’t rest easy, a million candles headed to the streets.
*a million: 백만

Rage and despair held their hearts, but not one face expressed gloom.

Families stood hand in hand and students locked their arms around each other, singing and taking pictures. They also did not forget to clean up the area before leaving. It was indeed a celebration of people who wanted to find what they had lost.
*hand in hand: 서로 손을 잡고 *lock arms around each other: 어깨동무를 하다 *celebration: 축제

What do we dream of as we stage candlelight vigils in the square under the moonlight?

Someone allegedly said that South Korea is a nation that failed to move forward beyond industrialization and democratization.

Inappropriate political ties between the president and her so-called close friend are making that allegation sound likely,

and it’s making it embarrassing to even mention the words “national reputation” these days, the phrase coined by the government.

But what citizens dreamed of that night was not a failed nation, but a nation that others around the world would envy.

They showed once again that it is always citizens who built up the nation even after politicians toppled it.

Today, the biggest moon in years brightened up the sky. As the moon and the earth stood closer to each other, people’s hopes grew bigger.

Amid the recent petty dispute about whether the president said “Sleep is medicine,” or “Sleep is the best,” citizens cannot easily fall asleep.

This is all for today’s anchor briefing.
