Out of control (국문)

Choo Mi-ae, head of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, has gone too far. Her recent comments hardly befit her position as chief of the main opposition party, which commands the largest number of seats in the legislature.

In Gwangju, a stronghold of the party, she claimed the president has squandered 200 billion won ($169.5 million) worth of tax money on her own beauty treatments. Later the party explained she must have gotten the figure wrong, based on the reports that the Blue House purchased 20.26 million won worth of syringes over the last two years.

It is hardly believable that a former judge and five-term lawmaker could mistake millions for billions. Does she think the public is that gullible?

Choo has been careless in many ways. Upon taking office last summer, she announced a plan to visit former president Chun Doo Hwan, who’s dictatorship sparked Korea’s democracy movement, which eventual led to constitutional reform allowing direct presidential elections in 1987.

She called off the plan when it was strongly protested. Choo then told reporters that she was going to have a one-on-one meeting with President Park Geun-hye after she was disgraced by the scandal involving her friend and aides. That summit was cancelled in 11 hours.
How can such an unreliable and unpredictable politician be trusted to find a breakthrough to our current political tumult? Choo last week claimed the president was preparing to declare martial law and proposed the Seoul mayor to cut off water supplies to the Blue House. Her rabble-rousing is not funny.

When Kim Moo-sung, former head of the Saenuri Party, said he would help muster votes for impeachment from the ruling party, she snapped that she would not seek help from someone who had led a group of national traitors.

Her words and behavior add more disgrace to Korean politics. She is degrading the credibility of the main opposition party. If she cannot live up to her title, she should give it up.

추미애 더불어민주당 대표의 언행이 시간이 흐를수록 가관이다. 정권교체를 목전에 뒀다는 수권정당, 제1야당의 대표로 도저히 봐줄 수 없는 행태를 보여주고 있다. 그는 23일 광주 행사에서 "박근혜 대통령이 미용을 위해 국민혈세 2000억원 이상을 썼다는 새로운 사실이 오늘 드러났다"는 상식적으로 납득하기 어려운 주장을 폈는데 당일 저녁 민주당은 "청와대가 지난 2년간 2026만원어치 주사제를 구입한 걸 착각해 발언한 것 같다"고 정정했다. 치매 환자나 의식미약 상태의 노인도 아니고 판사 출신에 5선 의원인 그가 2000만원과 2000억원을 구분하지 못했다는 건 이해하기 어렵다. 국민의 세금으로 운영되는 공당 대표자의 문제적 행동을 여러 번 접하면서 추 대표가 국민을 무시하고 우습게 여기는 것 같다는 생각이 든다.
추 대표의 이런 행태는 어제오늘의 얘기가 아니다. 지난 여름 취임 직후 전두환 대통령의 사저를 방문하겠다고 일방적으로 발표한 뒤 당내외 비난이 잇따르자 하루도 안 돼 이를 철회하는가하면 최근 국정농단 사건에선 느닷없이 박근혜 대통령과 영수회담을 한다고 선언한 지 11시간만에 취소하는 소동을 벌였다. 경솔함과 무책임,말뒤집기가 이렇게 지나쳐서야 무슨 정치를 하겠다는 건지 알수가 없다. 추 대표는 지난 주 광화문 시민집회를 앞두고 "박 대통령이 계엄령을 준비하고 있다"는 밑도 끝도 없는 주장을 폈다. "박 대통령이 청와대에서 농성을 하고 있는데 박원순 서울시장이 살수가 아니라 식수를 끊어야할지 모르겠다"는 식의 얘기는 폭력적이고 유치하다.
탄핵에 앞장서겠다는 김무성 새누리당 전 대표에 대해선 "부역자 집단의 당 대표를 지낸 분""우리는 탄핵표를 구걸하지 않겠다"고 했는데 제3자가 듣기에도 모욕적이다. 추 대표의 언행은 정치를 혐오스럽게 만들 뿐 아니라 박근혜 탄핵정국에서 가장 중요한 제1야당의 신뢰와 책임성을 스스로 깎아먹는다. 이런 일이 되풀이 되면 추 대표는 그 자리에서 내려와야 한다는 자격론 시비에 휩싸일 것이다.
