The monster inside us (국문)

President Park Geun-hye’s approval rating dropped to 4 percent last week, the lowest in Korean presidential history. In other words, 96 percent of Korean people disapprove of her. It is surprising that 96 percent of people have the same thoughts in a democratic country where everyone is free to have their own ideas. That’s because the public has experienced extreme shock, rage and a sense of betrayal. For several weeks, newspaper editorial pages and social media have been flooded with calls for President Park to step down.

But then I had a different thought after seeing the controversy surrounding hip-hop trio DJ DOC’s plan to perform a new song, “Address Known,” at last weekend’s protest rally in Gwanghwamun Square, a performance that was later canceled. Even as we claim that we are punishing a leader who ignored criticism and the rule of law while abusing power undemocratically, we, too, might be trapped by uniform thinking that leads us to only one answer. I am uncomfortable with the hypocrisy inside us that prompts bias and hatred in the name of a greater cause.

After the performance was canceled due to the song’s lyrics, which expressed hatred toward women, Lee Ha-neul, a member of the trio, complained that “we must not fight with each other and spoil the essence.” Many arguments were posted on social media that the incident was an act of censorship by some women’s groups, and they complained about the canceled performance.

If the trio truly had no intention of promoting hatred toward women, they could have just changed the problematic parts of the lyrics and performed the piece. The song was already made public, and there was no reason to apply the framework of censorship or criticize those who took issue with it.

There is no reason to repeat again the failures of President Park, who has paralyzed state affairs and disgraced the country. And the public servants around the president who contributed to destroying the country do not even deserve criticism. That is why everyone is holding up candles to condemn the monsters.

But does criticism have to be identical and unified? How is this different from the high-handedness and lack of communication that drove the Park administration into failure, and how is this different from the top-down system where everyone moves simultaneously without questioning the morality of what’s imposed on us?

In the book “Lies of Koreans,” which analyzed 1,000 Korean lies for five years, the author wrote, “Anyone can be a monster, when one is brutal to others while being generous to one’s self.” Now, we are holding candles against one monster, but unless we fight the hypocrisy inside us, anyone can become a monster.

지난주 박근혜 대통령의 국정 지지도가 역대 최저치인 4%를 기록했다. 숫자를 뒤집으면 96%가 지지하지 않는다는 얘기다. 생각이 모두 제각각인 민주국가에서 96%가 같은 생각을 한다니 참 놀라운 일이다. 그만큼 충격과 분노, 그리고 배신감이 컸기 때문일 것이다. 벌써 수주째 모든 신문의 사설이며 칼럼, 심지어 SNS까지 대통령은 물러나라는 얘기로 넘쳐나는 것만 봐도 알 수 있다.
　그런데 문득, 지난 주말 서울 광화문 촛불집회 무대에서 발표하기로 했던 가수 DJ DOC의 ‘수취인분명’을 둘러싼 논란을 보며 좀 삐딱한 생각이 들었다. 절차나 비판적 의견을 무시한 채 비민주적으로 행사한 잘못된 권력을 단죄한다면서 우리 스스로는 여전히 하나의 정답만 일사불란하게 말하라고 강요하는 획일적 사고에 사로잡혀 있는 건 아닐까라는 걱정 말이다. 또 대의를 내세워 은근슬쩍 편견과 혐오를 조장하는 우리 안의 위선도 꺼림칙했다.
　여성혐오 가사 논란으로 광장 공연이 좌절된 뒤 DJ DOC의 멤버 이하늘은 여혐을 문제 삼은 사람들을 가리켜 “우리끼리 싸우면서 본질을 흐려선 안 된다”고 불만을 터뜨렸다. SNS에도 이를 일부 여성단체의 검열로 단정 지으며, 공연을 못 보게 된 데 대해 원망하고 비난하는 글이 넘쳐났다. 정말로 여혐 의도가 없었다면 문제가 된 가사만 수정하고 무대에 올렸으면 될 일이다. 음원까지 출시된 노래를 놓고 ‘검열’이라는 프레임을 씌우거나 ‘본질을 흐리지 말라’며 문제 제기한 측을 비난할 일은 아니란 말이다.
　국정을 마비시키고 나라를 망신시킨 박 대통령의 실정이야 굳이 다시 말할 필요도 없다. 직언 한번 안 하고 호가호위하다 나라 망친 대통령 측근 공직자들 역시 비난의 말조차 해주기 아깝기는 마찬가지다. 그래서 모두들 ‘괴물’을 향해 촛불이라는 돌을 던지고 있다. 하지만 누구의 말처럼 ‘본질’에만 맞는다면 누구나 군말 없이 한목소리를 내야 한다는 주장이라니. 이게 박근혜 정부를 실패로 몰았던 독선과 불통, 그리고 옳든 그르든 하나의 지침 아래 일사불란하게 움직이는 상명하복 시스템과 과연 무엇이 다른지 모르겠다.
　한국인의 거짓말 1000여 건을 5년 동안 분석한 『한국인의 거짓말』에는 이런 말이 나온다. ‘누구나 괴물이 될 수 있다. 타인에게는 혹독하고 스스로에게는 너그러운 사람이 될 때다.’ 지금은 하나의 괴물을 향해 촛불을 들지만 우리 안의 위선을 털어내지 않으면 누구라도 괴물이 될 수 있다.
