Korean-French production begins France tour

“The Empire of Lights,” a play co-produced by Korea and France, will kick off its one-month French tour next week, the National Theater Company of Korea (NTCK), one of the co-producers, said Thursday.

The play is an adaptation of a novel by renowned writer Kim Young-ha. The novel is about a long-forgotten North Korean agent in South Korea who one day receives an order from the North to return to his home country within 24 hours.

The call drives him into a chaos over his identity after two decades of living a middle-class life as a movie importer in the South.

The joint work premiered at Myeongdong Theater in Seoul in March 2016, and hit the stage at the Theater of Orleans in May that year.

“The Empire of Lights” will be on stage at the National Theater of Brittany in Rennes as an official invitational work of the upcoming TNB Festival, an international performing arts festival, from Nov. 9-18, according to an NTCK official.
