Jin Seon-kyu’s new look makes him a cut above the rest : Actor’s tough-guy role in ‘The Outlaws’ has brought him unexpected popularity

Because of the film’s success, the actor has become more popular than ever. His tough-guy character’s attitude left an impression in the film, with his shaved head, tanned skin and sunken cheeks. Totally immersed in his role, the actor spent months in character, using public transportation to travel back and forth to set where he attracted attention for his crude appearance.
But believe it or not, Jin’s role in “The Outlaws” is his first time playing a thug.
“Shaving my head was a turning point in my acting career,” Jin said during an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. To him, the popularity of “The Outlaws” and his current fame is surreal.

A. No, actually, they don’t. Unless I shave my head again, I don’t think they will in the future (laughs). Shaving my head was a bit of a breakthrough for me. All this time I grew my hair and had a good and pleasant image. Through cutting off my hair, I discovered an image that even I had not seen before.
Sitting here with you now, its hard not to notice that you look much different from your character in the movie.
My image changed gradually along with my growing hair. Normally, I look like this. After failing to get a part in the movie my first time around, I tried out again for this villain role and finally got the part. I never thought I could play a villain, so it was the biggest and most radical challenge in my acting career.
At first I couldn’t really bring out that evil, charismatic image, so I had some trouble playing the part. I also think that the director and I had different thoughts on how to portray the character. Since it didn’t go well at the start, I got cramps on set due to the stress. Getting ready to go on set always took a long time because my appearance had to change radically to give off that evil impression. Cutting off all my hair was one of the last changes made so that I could depict the character accurately, and I am happy to say that it worked.
Could you have predicted that the movie and your role could have been this popular?
I never thought people would love it so much. All the actors and staff from the movie say that it’s a miracle. I was just so happy to film a movie the same way I would when I do theater. The actors would all gather at (co-star) Yoon Kye-sang’s house and practice. We studied our roles every day. After two to three weeks, I had all of my parts memorized. Then, I would practice again and again until the day of the shoot, and practice again at morning rehearsals before shooting the scene.
What are your future plans?
I received so much attention for this role, so I’m also anticipating my next work. But I’m a bit worried that my next role will be compared with this one. Nonetheless, I just want to become a flexible actor who can give the audience what it wants.

'범죄도시' 진선규 ”'진짜 조선족이냐'는 말, 짜릿해”
배우 진선규는 이름 석자보다 위성락이라는 역할명으로 더 익숙하다.
'범죄도시(강윤성 감독)'에서 윤계상의 오른팔 위성락을 연기한 그는 영화의 흥행으로 인생 최고의 주목을 받고 있다. 삭발 머리에 태닝한 검은 피부, 다이어트로 '퀭'해진 얼굴을 하고선지하철을 타고 다니며 찍은 영화가 역대 청소년관람불가등급 한국영화 흥행 순위 3위에 오른 덕분이다.
사실 진선규는 지금껏 선하고 정의로운 역할만 맡아왔다. '범죄도시'와 동시기 개봉한 영화 '남한산성'에서도 그의 얼굴을 찾아볼 수 있는데, 누구도 동일 인물임을 알아차리지 못할 정도였다. '남한산성'에서 그는 비참하게 죽음을 맞는 군인을 연기했다.
"삭발이 터닝포인트이자 신의 한 수"라고 말하는 그는 '범죄도시'로 연기 인생의 새로운 막을 올렸다. 청룡영화상 남우조연상 후보에 오르는 영예도 안았다. '범죄도시'의 흥행도, 지금의 인기도 그에겐 기적 같았다.
-'범죄도시' 성공 이후 많이들 알아보지 않나.
"아니다. 못 알아보신다. 머리를 깎지 않는 한 앞으로도 그럴 것 같다.(웃음) 삭발이 나에겐 약간의 터닝포인트다. 그간 계속 머리를 내려 선하고 수수한 이미지였다. 삭발을 하며 나도 몰랐던 내 모습을 알게됐다."
-실물과 영화 속 인상이 참 다르다.
"머리가 기니까 인상이 알아서 돌아오더라. 평상시엔 이런 얼굴이다. 하하. 첫 오디션에서 떨어지고 두번째 다시 다른 인물로 오디션을 봤을 때 다시 기회를 얻었다. 위성락 역할을 하지 못할 줄 알았는데 할 수 있게 됐다. 처음엔 위성락 이미지가 계속 안 나와 애를 먹었다. 의상 피팅과 분장 시간이 상당히 오래 걸렸다. 마지막에 신의 한 수로 머리를 깎았던 거다."
-연기 변신에 어려움은 없었나.
"내가 지금껏 맡았던 역할 중 가장 컸다. 오디션을 봤는데 캐릭터에 대한 감독님의 생각과 제 생각의 차이가 있었던 것 같다. 하고 싶은데 안되니까 스트레스로 복통도 오고 그랬다."
-흥행 예상했나.
"이렇게 될 거란 생각은 못했다. 모든 배우와 스태프들이 다 기적이라고 말한다. 그냥 연극처럼 찍을 수 있어서 행복했다. 두달 가까이 계상이 집에 모여 연습했다. 매일 공부했다. 2~3주 지나니까 전체 대사를 다 외우게 되더라. 그렇게 연습해서 전날 다시 연습하고, 당일날 아침 리허설을 하는 거다. 그렇게 하다보니 계상이는 자기 몫을 나눠주기 시작했다. 룸살롱 신이라든가, 독사를 죽이는 신은 시나리오에선 계상이 거였다."
-롤모델은.
"정말 영화를 아무것도 모르는 시골에 살 때 '가위손'이라는 영화를 보고 너무나도 감동을 받았다. 그래서 조니뎁이 내 롤모델이다. 나는 판타지영화를 하고 싶다. 그런 판타지적인 인물이 되고 싶다."
-연극을 하며 무명 시절이 길었다.
"누가 그 시절을 힘들었냐고 물으면 나는 '100% 안 힘들었다'고 할 거다. 물론 육체적으로 혹은 금전적으로 힘들었을지 모르지만, 내가 좋아서 하고 있는 거니까 좋은 게 더 컸다. 물론 결혼하고 나서 쌀이 떨어진 날도 있엇다. 그러나 그 어려움을 이기면서 해내는 소중함이 있었다."
-앞으로의 계획은.
"일단 지금 이렇게 주목받았는데, 설렘도 있고 기대감도 있지만 다음 작품과 비교될까봐 약간의 걱정도 있다. 사실 그런 것 신경쓰지 않고 우리 딸이 제일 좋아하는 액체괴물 같은 배우가 되고 싶다. 투명한데다 만지는대로 형태가 달라진다. 또 담는대로 담겨지고 꽉 찬다. 잘 채워지고 변하고, 투명하고 어떤 상대든 그 만큼의 것을 돌려주는 배우가 되고 싶다."
