Do Kyung-soo likes his comedy black : Singer-actor takes gamble on role in a film about unfortunate situations

Having premiered at the 21st Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the movie, co-starring Shin Ha-kyun, centers on the owner of a failing “DVD bang” - similar to an internet cafe but for watching DVDs - named Du-sik, played by Shin, who desperately needs money. The film revolves around two men from different generations - Du-sik and and his part-time worker Tae-jeong (Do) - struggling to deal with their own issues.
Magazine M, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, met with Do recently to discuss his role that offers a stinging look at modern society. The following are edited excerpts of its interview.
Singer-turned-actor Do Kyung-soo plays a part-time worker at a failing DVD cafe in the black comedy “Room No. 7.” [LOTTE ENTERTAINMENT]
A. Yes, for the shooting of “Swing Kids” (the working title of a film directed by Kang Hyung-chul that will come out next year). I’m learning to tap dance because I play a North Korean soldier mesmerized by tap dancing, and it’s really fun. It’s different from memorizing the choreography for a stage performance. It’s like playing drums with my feet. It feels like I’m learning to play a new instrument.
Your latest film is a black comedy involving drugs. Did that make you hesitate to take the role?
Even the CEO of the movie’s production company, Myeong Films, was surprised I took the role. I found the script of “Room No. 7” so interesting that I finished reading it in one sitting. I’ve always liked black comedy and it was a genre I wished to try. I also liked how Tae-jeong had a strong personality. Tae-jeong is shrewd and nice but is a little cold-hearted. He struggles to solve situations that have gotten him into trouble, which grabbed my interest.
Have you encountered any tough situations like Tae-jeong?
I haven’t, but since I started working earlier than other people my age, I could sympathize with how tough social life can be. In the film, Tae-jeong says, “Why are things so tough?” I summoned up deep emotion to say that line because I thought it is an important comment that shows how the character truly feels. In terms of personality, I’m similar to Tae-jeong. When pushed into unfortunate situations, I usually keep to myself. Instead of coming out forward to quickly solve an issue, I usually slowly look back on how it should be solved.
How was acting with Shin Ha-kyun?
I grew up watching his films, so I was very excited about getting to act alongside him. At first, I thought he would be a little scary, but getting to know him, I realized he is very thoughtful. He is usually calm and quiet, but once the shooting begins, he turns into a completely different person (laughs). He prepares his acting very thoroughly. On the shooting site, we were able to work in harmony without spending much time on rehearsals.
The charm of “Room No. 7” is its sharp commentary on modern Korean society. What did you think of its satirical message?
I truly liked the satirical message. I first watched the flick in July when it opened the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Though I’m never satisfied with my acting, I thought the movie was very fun. Before, I watched the indie movie “10 Minutes” (2014) directed by Lee Yong-seung. I found the film’s character - a temporary worker at a public institution - to be so realistic that I wished I had played the role. It was only after I was cast for “Room No. 7” that I realized that I would be working with the director of “10 Minutes,” Lee Yong-seung. I was so glad.
How was working with Director Lee?
He is an open person who is always willing to share opinions instead of insisting on what he thinks is right. In the script, Tae-jeong was a lot quieter and less defiant. I suggested that Tae-jeong should be a little more daring and defiant.

'7호실' 도경수 "연기가 나를 변화시킨다"
[매거진M] 꿈을 향한 갈증과 생계의 고단함을 삼키는 20대. 태정은 순수하지만 돈 때문에 마약 범죄 조직과 손잡을 만큼 겁 없고 절박한 청년이다. 도경수(24)는 섬세하고 맞춤한 연기로 복잡한 태정 캐릭터에 현실성을 더한다. 이제 그에겐 아이돌 그룹 엑소만큼 배우라는 말도 퍽 익숙해 보인다. 연기 잘하기로 소문난, 촉망받는 20대 남자 배우로 말이다.
-머리가 짧아졌다.
‘스윙키즈’(2018년 개봉, 강형철 감독) 촬영 때문인가 보다. “맞다. 지금 6회 차를 찍었다. 탭댄스에 빠진 북한군 역이라 탭댄스를 배우고 있는데, 정말 재밌다. 무대 안무를 외우는 것과는 또 다르더라. 발로 치는 드럼이랄까. 새로운 악기를 배우는 느낌이다.”
-‘7호실’ 얘길 해보자. 블랙코미디에 마약이란 소재도 있어, 아이돌인 도경수가 출연할 줄 몰랐다.
“제작사인 명필름의 심재명 대표님도 전혀 예상하지 못했다고 하더라. 회사에서 추천해 준 시나리오였는데, 그 자리에서 한 번에 죽 읽었을 만큼 너무 재밌었다. 원래 블랙코미디를 좋아하는데다 아직 해보지 않은 장르라 도전하고 싶더라. 태정의 캐릭터가 뚜렷한 것도 매력적이었다. 태정은 착하면서도 눈치가 빠르고 조금은 차가운 아이다. 그에게 현실적인 문제들이 꼬여 뜻대로 되지 않는 상황을 겪는 모습이 마음에 쑥 들어왔다.”
-실제론 태정처럼 힘겨운 상황에 처한 적은 없지 않나.
“현실적으론 없지만, 사회 생활을 또래보다 일찍 하면서 느낀 답답함은 알고 있다. 극중 태정이 ‘뭐가 이렇게 힘드냐’ 라는 말을 하는데, 태정의 진심이 압축적으로 담긴 중요한 말이라 감정을 깊이 담았다. 성격 면에선 태정과 꽤 비슷하다. 나도 안 좋은 상황에 놓이면 속으로 누르고 참는 편이라. 앞에 나서기 보단 찬찬히 쳐다보는 타입이다.”
-뒷목의 문신도 인상적이더라. 태정의 성격과 잘 어울리기도 하고.
“그래서 했다(웃음). 감독님과 상의하며 ‘문신을 하자, 모양은 뭐가 좋을까’ 하다 레터링이 좋겠다고 제안했다. 다양한 문구를 보다 ‘모든 사람을 만족시키기 위해 노력할 필요는 없다’는 말이 확 와닿아 이걸로 결정했다. 정말 태정이랑 꼭 어울리는 말 같아서.”
-선배인 신하균과 호흡을 맞춰본 소감은.
“어릴 때부터 선배님 영화 보며 자랐기 때문에, 함께 연기를 하게된 게 신기하고 즐거웠다. 처음엔 좀 무서울 것 같았는데, 알고보니 무척 자상하셨다. 조용하고 차분한 성격인데, 촬영만 돌입하면 완전 다른 사람이 되신다(웃음). 연기 준비도 아주 꼼꼼히 하시고. 현장에선 긴 리허설을 하지 않아도 합이 잘 맞아서, 함께 신기해했다.”
-‘7호실’의 숨은 매력은 요즘 한국 사회를 향한 날카로운 시선이다.
“그런 사회 풍자의 메시지가 정말 좋았다. 지난 7월 부천국제판타스틱영화제에서 개막작으로 선정돼 그때 영화를 봤다. 내 연기야 늘 아쉽지만 영화 자체는 재미있었다. 꽉꽉 차있는 영화 같달까. 예전에 독립영화를 찾아보다 우연히 이용승 감독님의 전작 ‘10분’(2014)을 봤다. 공공기관의 비정규직인 주인공을 직접 연기해 보고 싶을 만큼 캐릭터가 사실적이더라. ‘7호실’에 캐스팅 되고 나서야 감독님의 전작이 ‘10분’인 것을 알았다. 얼마나 반갑던지.”
-직접 작업해보니 어땠나.
“늘 마음을 열고 의견을 나누는 분이었다. 마냥 자기 생각을 고집하지 않는달까. 현장에서도 보다 사실적인 표현을 위해 이야기를 많이 나눴다. 사실 시나리오의 태정은 지금보다 더 조용하고 덜 반항적이었다. ‘좀 더 과감하고 공격적인 모습이 나오는 게 더 태정이와 맞을 것 같다’고 감독님께 말씀드려 바꿔 나갔다. 상대를 때리는 모습을 넣기도 하고.”
-‘카트’(2014, 부지영 감독) 이후 쉬지 않고 연기를 하고 있다. 남다른 애정이 있는 것 같은데.
“연기 욕심이 굉장히 많다(웃음). 연기를 하면서 삶의 재미를 찾았기 때문이다. 작품을 하면서도 내 감성이 변하고 성장하고 있음을 느낄 때 깜짝 놀란다. 내가 맡은 캐릭터에 여러 감정을 느끼곤 한다. 태정을 연기 할 땐, 그의 과거를 상상하면서 ‘얘가 이렇게 힘들었겠구나’ 하며 더 이해하게 됐다. 그런 경험이 쌓이면 미세하게 변하는 감정의 결을 더 잘 표현할 수 있지 않을까 기대한다.”
-같은 영화를 반복해서 볼만큼 영화를 좋아하지 않나. 요즘 재밌게 본 영화라면.
“요즘은 너무 바빠 많이 챙겨보진 못했다. 아, 집에서 ‘버드맨’(2014, 알레한드로 곤잘레스 이냐리투 감독)을 또 봤다. 상상조차 할 수 없는 연출을 선보이는 미친 영화다(웃음). 아무래도 인생 영화가 되지 않을까. 형식도 너무 독특하고, 한물 간 배우의 이야기로 연기와 인생의 이면을 포착한 것도 놀랍다. ‘캐스트 어웨이’(2000, 로버트 저메키스 감독)는 여섯 번 정도 봤다. 반복해서 보면 새로운 부분이 자꾸 보이는 게 신기하고 재밌어서 또 보게 되는 것 같다.”
-극장에도 가나.
“심야 영화 보러 자주 간다. 사람들 없을 때 조용히(웃음).”
-지금 엑소 콘서트 준비와 ‘스윙키즈’ 촬영을 함께하며 ‘7호실’ 개봉까지 앞두고 있다. 정말 바쁠 것 같은데.
“데뷔 이래로 지금이 제일 바쁘다. 이번 콘서트는 새롭게 외워야 할 안무가 많다. 여기에 탭댄스와 북한 사투리까지. 휴. 사실 연기와 엑소 활동을 병행하는 게 쉽지는 않다. 그래도 내가 짊어져야 할 숙제일 테니. 촬영할 때마다 ‘끝나면 쉬어야지’ 하면서도 막상 출연하고 싶은 영화가 생기면 그 마음을 자꾸 잊어버린다. 바쁘게 사는 리듬에 익숙해지면 안 되는데.”
-일 외에 즐거움을 주는 취미라면.
“최근엔 일밖에 안 해서… 아, 요리! 먹는 걸 좋아해서 요리를 자주 한다. 맛있게 만들어 먹는 것도, 주변 사람들이 내 요리를 먹는 것도 모두 좋다. 요즘은 생선 조림을 잘 한다. 며칠 전에 엑소 멤버들을 불러서 병어조림·볶음밥·떡갈비·조개탕을 해줬다. 모두 잘 먹어줘서 기분이 좋더라(웃음).”
