(If you are well, I am also well. )

This is today’s Anchor Briefing.

Si vales bene est, ego valeo. '

“Si vales bene est, ego valeo,” meaning, “If you are well, I am also well.”

According to Father Han Dong-il, who teaches Latin, people in Rome used to always put this quote at the beginning of their letters.

I think the idiom that is the opposite of this quote would be “Gakjadosaeng,” meaning living on one’s own without depending on or caring for anyone else.

When I ponder the idiom, we are all used to living alone. In school, in society, even between friends… competition is now an everyday occurrence and the philosophy of “Gakjadosang” always tempted us into thinking that only my or my family’s wellbeing matters.

Protestant pastors who call themselves sacred turn large churches over to their children like a mom-and-pop store. Chaebols prosper when small and medium-sized companies suffer. Supervisors who have committed sexual harassment in the workplaces still maintain their positions. Influential politicians spend their citizens’ taxes carelessly as if it were their own money... As if we want to forget that we are the victims of all those wrongdoings, we have become indifferent to others’ pains.

*turn~ over to~ : ~을 ~에게 물려주다
*wrongdoing: 악행

I was wrong.

“Are you safe?”

These words flooded social media last Wednesday after the earthquake in Pohang. In the face of unexpected disaster, we were able to discover our true selves.

People living close by all rushed to Pohang to offer help, while the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) was postponed for one week for the safety of students residing in Pohang, and words of encouragement from fellow students in other areas of the country for their peers in Pohang filled social media.

Although the world has forced us to take the path of gakjadosaeng, we have maintained our sense of dignity and compassion.

We all remember the date Jan. 17, 1995, the day when in Kobe, Japan, more than 6,400 lives were lost due to the disastrous earthquake.

The foreign correspondents who were there were astonished by the Japanese citizens’ calm attitude after the catastrophe.

They didn’t weep, mourn, or raise a commotion, instead they were rational enough to swiftly pass on the news that large media outlets hadn’t covered on their regional radio reports.

So although on the surface, we may look like we are each walking on separate paths to survive, we still haven’t lost our humanity and regard for others like the citizens of Kobe.

So once again, I remind myself, “Si vales bene est, ego valeo.” “If you are well, I am also well.”

That is all for today’s Anchor Briefing.

On a further note, I heard that private academies in Gangnam opened up special classes as soon as they heard the news of the postponement of the test. As for me, I would rather bet our future on the promise that one student from Pohang made in the shelter last week.
