[앵커브리핑] '대연각, 그리고 슬픔에 잠긴 도시' (“Daeyeonggak,” and the city sunken in grief)

This is today’s Anchor Briefing.

Twenty-year-old university student Min Byung-moo stayed in a hotel for the night with his friends after attending a concert. He must have been excited to use the hotel coupon that he received as a Christmas present.

The name of the hotel was “Daeyeonggak.” The next day, on Dec. 25, 1971, a propane gas explosion downstairs brought about the worst fire catastrophe in the history of the country.

One hundred and sixty-three people were pronounced dead. People from all over the country, including myself, saw the terrible tragedy live on television, where victims were jumping from the smoke-filled building to escape the fire, or plummeting to their deaths just as they were being rescued by a helicopter… it was indeed the cruelest form of a Christmas nightmare.

And on Dec. 25, 2017, the small town of Jecheon was lost in a swamp of sorrows.

The blocked emergency exits and sprinklers that failed to work, the production of the illegal extension works for somebody’s interests instantly took 29 lives through a fire which occurred on Dec. 21.

The scene of the blackened remains of the building oddly overlapped with the black smoke which consumed the blue sky 46 years ago. Even this Christmas, a fire at a construction site in Suwon led to the loss of another precious life.

In times of despair, regular people became the heroes in the midst of chaos.

The barber in the building who inhaled too much gas while he led customers safely to the emergency stairs; an elderly man in his 70s and his grandson tore open the windowsill and saved a life; and a person who saved a someone dangling from above through maneuvering an cleaning vehicle.

Even on the brink of life and death, there were heroes who reached out their hands for others.

Come to think of it, even 46 years ago, Santa Claus existed.

A waiter who smelled smoke beforehand and safely evacuated customers, saving dozens of lives; the construction workers working nearby who became rescuers with their ropes and equipment; and the firefighters who succeeded in rescuing a Taiwanese diplomat from a high-level floor.

As Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for the people by stepping up to the cross by himself, I hope that such heroic acts can provide comfort to help overcome the tragedies, and become a stepping stone for society to move on.

Lastly, I have a song to introduce to you all. It was the song that 20-year-old student sang the night before he lost his life at the hotel.

His younger brother, Min Byung-ho, released his deceased brother’s song to the world after his death.

Although the paths are rough, no matter how much rain falls and winds blow, we will grasp our hands and share the warmth for each other, even in the midst of snow storm.”

Although the world has brought upon much grief, it is also the world that cures people from tragedies. That is the Christmas miracle.
