Doggedly pursuing truth (kor)

The 2018 year of the dog has begun. We embrace the new year with a heavy heart due to our severely divided society, polarized economy and insecure security front with nuclear threats from our own race. We cannot easily share words of well wishes for the new year.

We have finished a tumultuous year. We removed a president. President Moon Jae-in was elected at the peak of our desperation. He vowed to unite this nation in his inauguration speech. The public euphoria and expectations for a new era have been dashed upon seeing the ghost of arrogance and self-justice in Moon’s power. His approach — income-led growth, nuclear power phase-out, and engagement policy towards nuclear-armed North Korea — has so far deepened the national division.

Apart from the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, nothing looks rosy for the country. Society is losing steam as the aging population and low birthrate pick up speed. The hopeless young generation calls the nation a living hell. Pyongyang under reckless leader Kim Jong-un is close to perfecting a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile that could threaten lives across the Pacific. Korea is sandwiched between nationalistic leaders Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

The country is bedeviled by ideological, generational, class and regional conflicts. There is no room for compromise and dialogue. No society can be conflict-free. All democratic societies bear conflicts as they are proof of free expression and pursuit of individual interests. Korea, which has undergone staggering economic and political development, is an expert on prevailing over conflicts by using it as a dynamic impetus for evolution. The problem is that conflict and polarization have deepened.

We must seek a breakthrough and solution in the core. The JoongAng Ilbo is launching a new campaign calling for centralism. We must pursue the middle ground by bringing together the extreme right and left poles. Centralism does not mean the gray area. If we cannot go beyond divisiveness, there is no future for Korea.

Fake news breeds confrontations and feeds on polarization. It proliferates on social media disguised as facts. Fake news shared and spread among groups with homogenous interests deepens confirmation bias.

We must uphold facts. The truth has the power to prevail. Journalists must do their best to deliver truthful news based on objectivity and fairness to ensure the public right to know. We vow to be the window of truth.

무술년(戊戌年) 새해가 밝았다. 오늘은 대한민국의 운명을 걸고 미지의 세계로 떠나는 첫날이다. 우리가 가보지 않는 길 앞에는 갈등과 반목으로 찢겨진 사회, 성장과 분배의 공방 속에 표류하는 경제, 흔들리는 한∙미 동맹과 핵전쟁의 공포라는 냉엄한 현실이 놓여 있다. 새해에는 꿈과 희망을 얘기하고 싶지만 마음은 무겁다.
지난 한 해는 격동의 순간들이었다. “이게 나라냐”는 한탄과 외침 속에 타오른 촛불은 박근혜 대통령을 탄핵했고, 그런 국민적 분노 위에 문재인 정권은 탄생했다. 문 대통령은 취임사에서 “진정한 국민 통합의 시작으로 역사에 기록될 것”이라고 다짐했다. 국민은 흥분과 감동으로 화답했다. 그러나 ‘내로남불(내가 하면 로맨스 남이 하면 불륜), ‘촛불 명령’ 같은 독선과 오만이 판치고, 적폐 청산이란 칼춤이 난무하면서 국민은 분열하기 시작했다. 여기에다 소득 주도 성장론, 탈(脫)원전 정책, 북한의 핵 도발 등 거의 모든 현안에서 둘로 쪼개져 메울 수 없을 정도 깊은 골이 패인 상태다.
새해를 맞아 사방을 둘러봐도 동계 올림픽이라는 이벤트성 행사를 빼면 온통 잿빛이다. 저출산과 고령화로 성장동력은 갈수록 떨어지고, ‘헬조선’을 외치는 젊은이들의 상처는 치유될 기미가 보이지 않는다. 종잡을 수 없는 북한 김정은 정권은 핵탄두를 탑재한 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM)을 조만간 완성해 한반도 평화를 위협할 것이다. ‘미국우선주의’의 트럼프와 '중국몽(中國夢)'의 시진핑, 과거로 회귀하는 아베의 틈새에 낀 대한민국의 입지는 더 좁아질 수가 있다. 올 6.13 지방선거는 문재인 정부에 대한 중간평가의 성격을 띠고 있어 사생결단 식으로 격화될 조짐이다. 모두 피할 길이 없는 난관들이다.
지금 대한민국은 이념과 세대, 지역과 계층으로 갈려 심각한 갈등을 겪고 있다. 협상과 타협은 증발했고 불통과 편가르기가 판친다. 하지만 갈등이 없는 사회는 유토피아 밖에 없다. 갈등은 민주사회에서 항상 존재하는 보편적 현상이다. 다양한 갈등은 사회 구성원의 욕구와 이해관계가 역동적으로 작동한다는 반증이다. 정치·경제적으로 압축 성장을 경험한 한국 사회에서 갈등은 더 나은 사회를 향한 진통이자 변화의 원동력임을 우리는 목도해왔다. 문제는 갈등의 양상이 더 첨예화하고 양극화(polarization)하고 있다는 점이다.
우리는 그 해법을 ‘중앙’에서 찾고자 한다. 중앙일보가 새 슬로건을 ‘중앙에 두다’로 정한 뜻도 여기에 있다. 중앙은 진보와 보수 사이의 이념적 구분을 넘어 양 극단을 절충하고 포용하는 개념이다. 치우치지 아니하는 바른 도리를 말하는 불교의 중도(中道)일 수도 있고, 지나치거나 모자람이 없이 떳떳하고 변함이 없는 상태를 뜻하는 유교의 중용(中庸)일 수도 있다. 어정쩡한 중간의 회색지대를 얘기하는 건 결코 아니다. 갈등사회를 풀지 못하면 대한민국의 발전과 도약은 더 이상 꾀할 수 없을 것이라는 절박한 문제의식에서 중앙을 꺼내든 것이다.
‘갈등사회’를 부추기는 첫 번째 진원지는 가짜 뉴스(fake news)다. 가짜 뉴스는 극단화된 사회에서 기승을 부린다. 왜곡•조작된 가짜 뉴스는 소셜 미디어(SNS)를 타고 순식간에 개인이나 집단에게 무차별적으로 유포되고, 진짜 뉴스처럼 둔갑한다. 특히 정치적 선동을 목적으로 한 가짜 뉴스는 ‘믿고 싶은 것만 믿는’ 동질적 사람들끼리 전파하고, 이들끼리 퍼나르고 공유함으로써 확증 편향(confirmation bias)을 심화시킨다.

마음에 들지 않는 판결이 나오면 출처 불명의 거짓 정보를 쏟아내면서 판사의 신상털이와 인신공격을 해대는 행태가 대표적이다. 특정 정치인까지 가세하는 어처구니 없는 일들이 벌어지지만 대다수는 방관한다. 가짜 뉴스의 폐해는 국론분열을 조장하고 공동체를 갈기갈기 찢어 놓는다. 우리 사회를 불신과 냉소주의의 늪에 빠뜨리는 재앙과 다름 없다.
우리는 그 해법을 팩트(사실)에서 찾는다. 팩트의 힘은 크고, 가짜를 몰아낼 수 있다고 믿는다. 기자들이 발품을 팔아 생생한 현장의 진실을 담아야 진짜 뉴스라고 할 수 있다. 정확하고 검증된 팩트를 바탕으로 객관적이며 공정한 정보를 전달해 국민의 알권리를 충족시키고자 한다. 진실의 창(窓)이 되겠다고 감히 다짐한다.
