Ha Jung-woo gets back in the swing of things : After a year-and-a-half hiatus, the actor has roles in two of the season’s biggest films

“Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds,” which opened on Dec. 20, has brought more than 10 million people out to theaters as of Thursday, making it Ha’s second film that has passed the 10-million-viwer milestone. Ha also appears in “1987: When the Day Comes,” which has already been seen by more than 3 million people since its release on Dec. 27.
“Along With the Gods,” an adaptation of a popular webtoon series, depicts characters going through different trials after their deaths to decide whether or not they can be reborn as humans. While that movie is a work of fiction, the other “1987: When the Day Comes” is based on a true story. In 1987, a college student died during a police investigation, and triggered people to come out and speak out against the injustice they had been seeing in society at the time.
Ha sat down with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to talk about his time shooting both films. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

A. It is tiring. It’s not that I’m physically tired, but more mentally tired. I think I need another brain. Doing a press conference two days in a row might be similar to playing a final match in the Olympics two times in a row. At least that’s how I feel. The two characters [I played] in the two movies are completely different, and the movies are different. It’s surprising that I’m holding myself together.
How are the films different?
The structure is different. “Along With the Gods” has stories that are parallel to one another while “1987” is focused on a single incident.
What were your thoughts while filming “Along With the Gods?”
As I was filming for a year, I thought I need to be better to my parents, and how lessons from the elderly are never wrong. There are some ideas that have been handed down generation to generation and still never change, and I thought I need to abide by those basic ideas.
Do you think you have been good in following those ideas?
I am quite ethical. I’m proud that I have kept my [beliefs]. But that doesn’t mean that I’m confident in [passing] a trial in hell (laughs). When I pray, I say, “Please forgive me for the sins I committed knowingly and unknowingly.”
What were your feelings when you were first reading through the script for “1987?”
As I was reading, I was also researching what actually happened at the time. I thought a lot about how reality can be a lot like a movie.
Families of those who died in the incidents shown in the movie also came to a private screening before the film was released. How did they react?
Many of the people in the audience were in tears. In front of them, I couldn’t dare say that the story is fun. Since the movie itself is based on the true story and there were families in front of me, I couldn’t really open up and talk much. The overall ambience was very solemn rather than just quiet.
This piece felt like something so difficult and it was something that I couldn’t easily talk about on the many entertainment programs I was on to promote the movie.
Are you satisfied with the movie?
I feel like the movie has meaning and I am proud [of that]. I feel thankful [to be a part of the film] since that incident in many ways allowed people to live in the democratic country we have today.
Are your fans disappointed in the fact that you don’t show up in that many scenes in the movie?
Those who cheer for me said that they were sad and wanted to see more of me. But since the structure of the movie is set the way it is, I couldn’t ask for more scenes. I knew it was going to be that way from the beginning.

돌아온 '하정우(40) 천하'다. 1년6개월의 공백은 역시 단순한 공백이 아니었다. 열일한 결과를 흥행으로 보답받는 짜릿함. 몇 번을 경험했을 하정우에게도 동시기 개봉한 두 작품이 역대급 성과를 일궈내고 있는 이 과정은 분명 색다른 경험일 것이다.
영화 '신과함께-죄와 벌(김용화 감독)'이 개봉 9일만에 누적관객수 600만 명을 돌파하며 박스오피스 1위를 지키고 있는 가운데, 한 주 늦게 등판한 '1987(장준환 감독)' 역시 만만치 않은 스코어를 자랑하고 있다. 12월 개봉한 세 작품 중 두 작품에 출연한 하정우의 영화가 쌍끌이 흥행을 이끌고 있는 상황. 하정우의 진가는 현재 진행형이다.
섣부르긴 하지만 지금까지 분위기로 본다면 '신과함께'는 2018년 첫 1000만 영화 등극이 사실상 확정이다. 하정우로서는 '암살(최동훈 감독)' 이후 두 번째 1000만 기록이다. '1987'은 개봉 직후 관객들의 이구동성 호평 속 '역대급 인생 영화'라는 찬사를 받고 있다. 흥행과 작품성 두 마리 토끼를 '또' 다 잡은 하정우다.
하정우는 공식적으로 '신과함께' 팀과 언론 인터뷰를 진행했지만 분량은 작정이라도 한듯 딱 '절반'으로 나눴다. '신과함께' 이야기를 신나게 하다가도 "그럼 우리 다시 '1987'로 돌아갈까요?"라며 천연덕스럽게 두 영화를 야무지게 홍보한 것. 무대인사도 어느 한 작품 섭섭함 없이 열심히 소화할 계획이다.
타고난 영리함은 여전하다. 쏟아지는 홍보 일정으로 매일 매일 스케줄이 빼곡하다. 성탄절 연휴는 물론 연말에 새해까지 관객들과 함께 한다. "뇌가 하나 더 있었으면 좋겠다"고 토로한 하정우지만 하정우이기에 할 수 있는 행복한 고민이기도 하다. 힘들어도 잊지 못할 12월이 아닐 수 없다.
- 영화가 두 편이다.
"피곤하다. 몸이 피곤하다기 보다 머리가 너무 피곤하다. 뇌 하나가 더 있어야 할 것 같다. 이틀 연속 언론시사회를 한다는건 올림픽 결승전을 두 번 뛰는 느낌과 비슷하지 않을까 싶다. 나에게는 그렇다. 전혀 다른 영화에 전혀 다른 캐릭터, 완전히 다른 성격의 투자 배급사 작품이라 어질어질하다.(웃음)
- '신과함께'과 '1987'이 동시기 개봉한다고 해도 너무 다른 장르라 보는 재미가 있다.
"구성부터 다르다. '신과함께'가 병렬식으로 진행된다고 하면 '1987'은 한 사건을 다룬다. 사실적인 작품이고 그런 부분에서 조금 더 집중돼 보이는 것은 사실이다. 대신 '신과함께'는 다채로워 보이겠지. 어드벤처 영화 같은 느낌이다. 내 기억 속 '쥬라기 공원' '반지의 제왕' 같은 영화들이 떠오른다.."
- '신과함께'를 찍으면서 느낀 현실적 깨달음이 있을 것 같다.
"1년 동안 찍으면서 '효도 해야겠다'는 생각ㅇ르 제일 많이 했고, '옛 어른들 말씀 하나 틀린 것 없다'는 생각도 했다. 오래 전부터 전해져 내려오는, 전 시대, 전 세대를 통틀어 변하지 않는 진리들이 있다. '그런 것들만 기본적으로 잘 지키고 살면 되겠구나' 싶었다."
- 잘 지킨다고 생각하나.
"난 도덕적인 편이다. 진리를 잘 지키고 살았다고 자부한다. 뭐 그렇다고 지옥 재판이 자신있는 것은 아니다.(웃음) 기도할 때 늘 '알고 지은 죄, 모르고 지은 죄 모두 용서해 달라'고 한다. 나도 그렇지만 대부분의 사람들 역시 모르고 지은 죄가 더 많을 것이다."
- “1987” 시나리오를 처음 봤을 땐 어땠나.
"시나리오를 보고 그때 그 사건들을 찾아 보면서 '어떻게 현실이 더 영화 같을 수 있을까. 어쩜 사람들이 하나같이 이럴 수 있을까. 이렇게 쓰라 그래도 못 쓰겠다'고 생각했다. '책상을 탁치니, 억!'은 웃기면서도 아이러니했다. 뭐 그런 대사를 칠 수 있나 싶었다."
- 유가족들도 시사회 때 영화를 관람했다고.
"시사회 때 많은 분들이 눈물을 흘렸는데 너무 당연한 수순같다. 고(故) 박종철 열사, 고 이한열 열사 유가족 분들을 비롯해 합창단원들까지 다 앉아 계셨다. 그 분들 앞에서 감히 내가 '이 이야기 재미있어요'라는 말을 못하겠더라. 물론 그렇게 말을 하더라도 영화적인, 시나리오적인 의미의 재미를 말하는 것이겠지만 사건 자체가 실화이기도 하고 유가족들이 앞에 계시니까 함부로 입을 열 수 없었다. 분위기가 가라 앉았다기 보다는 엄숙했다는 표현이 맞을 것 같다. 홍보차 많은 연예 정보 프로그램을 소화 했는데 이 작품 만큼은 어렵게 느껴졌고 쉽게 이야기 할 수 없었다."
- 영화에 대한 만족도가 높은 것 같다.
"하나 하나의 의미가 담겨진 것 같았고 자랑스러웠다. 그 사건으로 인해 지금 우리가 민주주의 나라에 살고 있다는 것이 감사하게 느껴지기도 했다."
- 분량에 대한 아쉬움을 표하는 반응도 많다.
"나를 좋아해 주는 관객 분들은 '아쉽다. 더 보고 싶었는데'라고 하시더라. 하지만 영화의 구성이 그러하니 '제 분량 늘려 주세요'라고 할 수는 없었다. 또 회차로 계약한 부분이 있기 때문에 애초 알고 들어간 작품이다."
