[앵커브리핑] '런던, 그리고 서울…두 도시 이야기' “London and Seoul… A tale of Two Cities”
짙은 안개 그리고 레인코트를 입은 신사.
Amid the thick fog stands a gentleman wearing a raincoat.
흔히들 떠올리는 런던의 풍경은 다들 마찬가지가 아닐까.
This is one of the cliché images of London that pops into our minds.
작가 코난 도일의 표현처럼 "마치 우유를 쏟아 부은 것 같은" 런던의 안개는 오히려 아름다움으로 기억되기도 했습니다.
The London fog was remembered as beautiful, with writer Conan Doyle describing it as “like milk being spilt over.”
그림뿐 아니라 영화로도 많이 다뤄졌을 정도니까요.
It has been depicted not only in many paintings, but also in movies.
1952년 12월 5일. 그날 역시 런던의 안개는 짙었습니다.
On Dec. 5, 1952, the city of London sunk into the depths of the fog.
*sunken: 가라앉은
한치 앞을 내다보기 힘들 정도로 두터운 안개가 사람들의 일상을 휘감았지요.
The thick fog blinded the residents, making it hard for them to see what was in front of them.
그러나 그날의 안개는 안개가 아닌 스모그.
But the fog was no innocent fog. Instead, it turned out to be smog.
닷새 동안 도시를 뒤덮었던 그 스모그는 만 명이 넘는 사망자를 초래한 최악의 참사로 기록됐습니다.
The smog which covered the city for five days led to the deaths of more than 10,000 people, and is remembered as one of the city’s worst tragedies ever.

산업혁명 이후 석탄으로 인한 대기오염 피해 사례가 많았지만 '경제가 먼저'라는 목소리에 문제를 뒷전으로 미룬 결과였지요.
There was great damage done from the overuse of coal during industrial revolution, but the smog was the result of the work of “Economy First” advocates, who ignored the serious environmental issues at hand.

당시 영국 정부는 마스크 300만 개를 배포했을 뿐 손을 놓고 있었고 결국 스모그라는 소리 없는 살인 무기는 사람이 초래해서 사람을 죽인 비극적인 역사의 산물이 되었습니다.
At the time, the British government merely distributed 3 million masks and wiped their hands clean of the catastrophe, while the smog became the deadliest murder weapon.

그리고 또 다른 도시…
And then, there is another city…
우리가 누려왔던 서울의 하늘은 이런 것이 아니었습니다.
The Seoul sky that we are living underneath now isn’t as clear as it once was.
쨍할 듯 차갑게 부서지는 공기와 손에 잡힐 듯 선명한 겨울 산의 풍경.
The crystal clear winter scene of a mountain with brisk blasts of cold air that felt like it could break one’s hand.

그러나 언제부턴가 우리의 하늘은 들숨 하나 날숨 하나에도 마음이 무거운 두려움의 대상이 됐습니다.
However, one day our sky became a monster of its own, causing us to fear every breath we take.
우리나라에 미세먼지라는 단어가 운위되기 시작한 것은 지난 1995년.
Here in Korea, discussions about fine dust began in 1995.
그러나 그 시절은 봄이면 날아드는 황사가 걱정스러웠을 뿐…
However, at the time, we were just worried about the annual arrival of yellow dust every spring.
호흡기 질환은 물론, 암까지 유발한다는 이 독성 물질에 대한 경고의 목소리는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없었습니다.
There were no warnings about how detrimental it was, and the deadly side effects ranging from respiratory diseases to cancer.

그렇게 뻥 뚫린 대책 끝에… 맞이한 오늘의 하늘.
After all those years of useless environmental policies, we face the sky we are living under today.
지금 우리의 현실은 마스크를 쓰고 미세먼지를 걸러준다는 공기청정기까지 들여다 놔야 그제서야 조금은 안심이 되는 세상…
Nowadays, the reality we have to face is wearing masks to protect our lungs from the fine dust, while we install air purifiers in buildings to help ourselves breath better air…
그러나 누군가는 공기청정기는커녕 마스크를 쓰는 것마저 허락되지 않아 마시는 공기조차 계급이 되는 세상…
But now, even the air we breath has become hierarchical, as those can cannot afford air purifiers and even masks to protect themselves from the dust are left to suffer…
우유를 쏟아 부은 것 같았다던 런던의 아름다움… 그러나 그것은 착각이었습니다.
The beautiful London that looked as if was sunken in milk was nothing but an illusion.
그리고 눈, 비가 쏟아진 후에야 만날 수 있는 그나마 보통 수준의 공기가 며칠 동안 우리의 호흡을 허락한다면 또 언제 그랬느냐는 듯 잊을 것인가…
But once we are able to breathe more freely after it rains or snows, then we usually forget this whole thing as if nothing had ever happened…
아니면 차라리 잊는 것이 편한가…
Or is it just easier to forget?
