Ryu Seung-ryong gains more than one superpower : The actor’s role in the fantasy flick ‘Psychokinesis’ has re-energized him

After appearing in big hits like “Masquerade” (2012), “Miracle in Cell No. 7” (2012) and “Roaring Currents” (2014) - all of which sold more than 10 million tickets in local theaters, a major milestone - his next two films, “The Guest” (2015) and “The Sound of a Flower” (2015) flopped.
What followed was a three-year break from acting, an eternity in the Korean film industry. By Ryu’s account, he started to feel physical and mental fatigue after “Roaring Currents,” an ambitious film about the Korean admiral Yi Sun-shin in which Ryu starred as the Japanese adversary.
If the past few years have been about soul searching, 2018 is the time for Ryu’s comeback. “Psychokinesis,” a fantasy comedy in which he plays a divorced man who suddenly gains the ability to fly and move objects with his mind, came out to critical acclaim on Jan. 31. His next film, “Seven Years’ Night,” is slated for release in March, and the Netflix series “Kingdom” is wrapping up shooting. Afterward, Ryu will begin work on the tentatively titled project “Extreme Job.”
In a recent interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, Ryu said, “These days have been filled with excitement and joy.” Below are edited excerpts from the interview.
In “Psychokinesis,” Ryu Seung-ryong plays a divorced father who suddenly gains superpowers. [NEXT ENTERTAINMENT WORLD]
A. When I first got the synopsis, not at all. I didn’t even think about the Yongsan tragedy [a deadly conflict between protesters and police in 2009 that serves as a critical plot element of “Psychokinesis”], which is what everyone was talking about after the premiere. What I did was just think about the fundamental problem when someone has to fight those with power or wealth, which turned out to suit the story very well. It’s what we’ve all experienced in our lives.
What was it like having to play scenes where you have superpowers?
The director [Yeon Sang-ho of “Train to Busan” fame] helped out a lot. He would always show me what he wanted before shooting. He would shock us because his acting was so good that we questioned our abilities.
He also had the ability to lead the crew very naturally, sometimes by making us compete against each other. Sometimes, he gave me inspiration for ideas that I hadn’t thought of, and sometimes he gave me lessons on what I shouldn’t do (laughs).
So how did it go on set?
Where would I have tried acting out such scenes? It was my first time flying. When I went to my first [flying shoot], there were 120 cameras filming me. Every single facial expression was scanned on the computer at the studio and changed throughout all 360 degrees. It was really awkward at first, but actually not that difficult.
Your facial expressions are said to have been great in the movie. Some people even call you the Korean Jim Carrey.
I didn’t particularly intend it, but I think it came across that way because I focused so much. Even that was Yeon’s idea. There’s this scene at the demolition site, where I turn my back to [Park] Jung-min [another actor] with my hands in my pocket, which was a face I had never made in my entire life. But I liked it. I think [Yeon] has very delicate direction when it comes to facial features because he used to paint.
Was it your idea to gain weight for the role?
My role in “The Fifth Column,” which has been postponed for now, was a skinny lieutenant. I had my body set for the role since I was supposed to shoot that after “Seven Years’ Night” instead of “Psychokinesis.” When Yeon saw me, he said, “This isn’t the body I want for [the character] Shin Seok-heon. Make me a body that I can see everywhere.” And so I did. I didn’t try anything in particular. I just ate a lot (laughs).
What would you like to do if you had superpowers?
I would like to fly around like a drone. If I could actually see the things that drones film, I would be so thrilled. These days, I would also like to blow away the fine dust back to where it came from (laughs). It’s been a while since I’ve seen a clear sky.
Did you want to give your comical image a change?
I did. Well, it was more that I wanted to show something new with my acting rather than change my image. But unintentionally, I came back with another comedy. I wanted to surprise people with “Seven Years’ Night,” and once more with “The Fifth Column” as the bad guy, before coming back a bit lightly with “Psychokinesis,” but I guess not. I hope [fans] understand what happened.
You had a three-year hiatus, whether you intended it or not. What was that like?
I lived so busily that I felt anxious about having a break. I just ran forward without thinking. I started in the film industry late in age, and so I kept saying “I still strive for more,” even when I was running around so much.
Looking back on those days, I would have just thrown myself right into acting. I would even spend a day alone in a prison for a scene in a movie, which was actually really scary. During my hiatus, I wanted to go back to those days when I could just pour in everything I had and act 24 hours a day.
How do you feel now that you’ve come back after such a long time?
I feel excited, nervous, grateful and everything else at the same time. I didn’t have time to feel all these emotions when I was working so busily. I could just about digest the schedule that was laid out for me, but this is refreshing energy and excitement that I haven’t felt in a long time. I feel like I’ve been filled up with all the physical and mental energy I used up before.

류승룡, 다시 시작된 '다작 길' 응원합니다
무려 3년만의 복귀다. 의도했지만, 의도치 않은 공백이 됐다. 배우 류승룡이 영화 '염력(연상호 감독)'으로 스크린에 컴백한다. '손님(김광태 감독•2015)', '도리화가(이종필 감독•2015)' 이후 관객 앞에 다시 서기까지 3년이 걸렸다. 류승룡은 "매일 기분좋은 설레임과 긴장감의 연속"이라며 진심어린 속내를 고백했다.
원조 3000만 배우다. '광해, 왕이 된 남자(추창민 감독•2012)', '7번방의 선물(이환경 감독•2013)', '명량(김한민 감독•2014)'이 연달아 1000만 돌파에 성공하면서 류승룡은 범접할 수 없는 '충무로 넘버원 흥행보증수표'로 꽃길을 걸었다. 정신없이 달렸고 더할나위없이 사랑 받았다.
하지만 누구나 한계는 있다. 스스로 정신적•육체적으로 '고갈된다'는 느낌이 들려는 찰나 작품 성적도 떨어졌다. 엎친데 덮친 격으로 '초심으로 돌아가자'는 다짐과 함께 선택했던 '7년의 밤(추창민 감독)' 개봉이 2년간 보류되고, 이미지 변신을 위해 잡았던 '제 5열' 제작이 무기한 연기되면서 가장 마지막에 촬영한 '염력'을 먼저 선보이게 됐다.
계획과는 달라진 행보지만 '친근한' 류승룡의 귀환은 반갑다. 오히려 다시 시작하는 단계에서 '염력'이라는 복귀작은 신의 한 수가 될 가능성이 높다. 어느 날 갑자기 초능력을 갖게 된 아빠. 류승룡 전매특허 코믹과 감동이 연상호 감독을 만나 꽃을 피웠다. 누구도 시도하지 않았던 낯선 연기를 기어이 해낸 류승룡이다.
"'너무 다작하는 것 아니냐'는 소리를 들을 것 같다"며 장난스런 푸념을 늘어놓은 류승룡은 실제 2018년 스케줄이 꽉 차 있다. 3월 묵히고 묵혀진 '7년의 밤'이 드디어 개봉을 추진하고, 현재 넷플릭스 오리지널 드라마 '킹덤' 촬영에 한창이며, 곧 신작 '극한직업(이병헌 감독)'도 크랭크인 한다. 그는 자주 볼 수 있어 다시 감사한 배우가 됐다.
- 소재에 대한 부담감은 없었나.
"시놉시스를 받았을 땐 없었다. 시사 후 이야기가 나오고 있는 용산 참사를 떠올리지도 않았다. 그저 권력에 대한 혹은 가진자에 대한 부당함에 맞서는데 있어 '가장 보편적인 문제가 뭘까' 생각했을 때 지금의 스토리가 가장 적합했고 나 역시 그렇게 이해했다. 우리가 자라면서 늘상 겪어 온 일이니까."
- 염력을 사용하면서 액션을 펼쳐야 했다.
"감독님의 도움이 컸다. 촬영 전 항상 시연을 해줬다. 배우가 스스로의 연기에 대해 걱정할 정도로 너무 연기를 잘해서 당황스럽게도 했다. 스태프들 반응이 좋으니까. 경쟁심을 유발시키는 등 묘한 운용 능력이 있더라. 그 모습을 보면서 미처 생각지 못한 아이디어가 떠오르는 경우도 있었고 '저렇게 하면 안 되겠구나' 싶었던 적도 있었다.(웃음)"
- 하늘을 날아다니기까지 한다.
"나라고 그런 연기를 어디서 해 봤겠나. 날아 다니는 것은 나 역시 첫 경험이었다. 현장에 갔더니 카메라 120대가 나를 찍고 있더라. 스튜디오에서 얼굴 표정 전부를 스캔으로 떴고 360도 회전하면서 희로애락을 다 담아 냈다. 어색했지만 때마다 상황 설명을 들었기 때문에 어렵지는 않았다."
- 얼굴 표정도 압권이었다.
"내가 게임을 안 하는데 '게임 리모콘을 움직인다고 생각하고 연기하라'는 지시를 받았다. 집중하다 보면 얼굴이 알아서 일그러진다고. 진짜 그렇지 않나. 아이디어를 얻어 적용했다."
- '한국의 짐캐리'라는 별명도 얻었다.
"의도했던 것은 아닌데 집중하다 보니까 표정 연기 때문에 은경이 눈에 그렇게 보인 것 같다. 그것 조차 연상호 감독의 시연이 있었다. 특히 철거촌에서 (박)정민이와 대화하고 혼자 주머니에 손을 넣은 채 돌아가는 신이 있는데, 그 때 지은 표정은 태어나 처음 지어 본 표정이다. 근데 좋더라. 확실히 그림을 그리던 분이라 그런지 표정에 대한 섬세한 디렉션이 있다."
- 살을 찌운 설정은 본인의 아이디어인가.
"현재는 제작이 보류된 상황이지만 '염력' 전 찍으려 했던 '제 5열' 속 캐릭터가 스킨한 장교였다. 역할에 맞춰 몸을 준비하고 있었는데 '제 5열'이 아닌 '염력'을 먼저 찍게 됐다. 연상호 감독님이 날 보더니 '이 몸은 내가 원하는 신석헌이 아니다. 이건 아니다. 어디서나 볼 수 있는 몸매를 만들어 달라'고 강조했다. 그래서 편안하게 찌웠다. 특별히 노력하지는 않았다. 밥차 오면 열심히 먹고 또 먹고 그랬다.(웃음)"
- 염력이 생기면 뭘 하고 싶은가.
"드론처럼 날라 다니고 싶다. 드론이 찍는 것을 직접 날아다니면서 보면 너무 행복할 것 같다. 음…. 요즘 같은 경우는 미세먼지를 날려 버리고 싶기도 하다. 애초 날기 시작했던 곳으로 다시 확 보내고 싶더라.(웃음) 청정한 하늘을 본지 꽤 됐다. 오늘은 그마나 좀 괜찮은 것 같아 다행이다."
- 자의 반 타의 반 3년이라는 공백이 있었다.
"쉬는 것이 불안하다 싶을 정도로 바쁘게 살았다. 앞만 보고 정신없이 달렸다. 늦게 영화를 시작했고 그래서 그렇게 달리면서도 '아직 계속 배고프다'는 말을 많이 했다. 그러다 돌이켜 보니 온 몸 내던져 연기했던 시절이 떠오르더라. '거룩한 계보'를 찍을 땐 사형수의 마음을 느끼고 싶어 촬영 전날 감옥 세트에서 혼자 자고 그랬다. 무서워서 혼났다.(웃음) 다시 24시간 연기에만 내 모든 것을 쏟아붓고 싶다는 마음이 커졌다."
- 차기작들은 이미지 변신에 대한 의도도 있었던 것인가.
"있었다. 이미지 변신이라기 보다는 새로운 연기를 보여주고 싶었다. 그랬는데 본의 아니게 또 코믹한 모습으로 돌아왔다. 원래는 '7년의 밤'을 짠 보여주고 '제 5열'의 악역으로 무거움의 정점을 찍은 뒤 '염력'을 선보이려 했는데 공백이 무색하게 됐다.(웃음) 과정을 이해해 주셨으면 좋겠다."
- 새로 시작하는 기분일텐데 현재 심경은 어떤가.
"설레이고, 긴장되고, 감사하고 만감이 교차한다. 쉼없이 일할 땐 이런 것을 느낄 새도 없었다. 그냥 짜여진 일정을 소화하느라 바빴는데 오랜만에 기분좋은 설레임과 긴장감이 생겼다. 정신적•육체적으로 소진된 에너지가 채워진 기분이다."
