지금으로부터 32년 전, 이제는 고인이 된 조영래 변호사가 낭독한 이른바 '권양 사건'의 변론요지 중 한 구절입니다.
Thirty-two years ago, this was part of a statement that lawyer Jo Young-rae read to accuse the policeman who tortured Miss Kwon.
당시 '권양'이라 불렸던 그의 이름은 '권인숙'.
Miss Kwon’s real name was Kwon In-suk.
이토록 철저하게 모욕하다니…
차라리 그가 날 죽여주는 것이
훨씬 깨끗하고 고마울 것 같았다.

그는 1986년 부천서 성고문사건의 피해자였습니다.
She was the victim of the 1986 sexual torture case involving the Bucheon police office.
수 없는 망설임 끝에 다신 되새기고 싶지 않은 그 순간을 꺼내놓았으나.
After countless hesitations, she recounted the terrible memory which she had never wanted to recall.

권위주의 정권은 사건을 은폐하려 시도했고 보도지침을 통해 언론을 옥죄었습니다.
But the authoritarian government tried to cover up the case by forcefully gagging the press and ordering them to publish false reports.

“How can a fully grown woman publicly assert that she has been sexually abused?”
지극히 보수적이었던 사회 분위기 역시 한몫을 거들었지요.
The social atmosphere at the time was extremely conservative and the government’s attempts to hush the case were allowed.
권양… 공권력의 불의를 고발했던 22살의 권인숙은 자신의 이름이 아닌 성씨와 성별로만 세상에 알려졌던 것입니다.
Miss Kwon… The 22-year-old Kwon In-suk who courageously accused the unjust government authority was only known to the world by her last name and her gender.

견고해 보였던 세상의 벽.
The seemingly impenetrable wall created by society’s stereotypes.

그때 그의 손을 잡았던 사람들이 있었습니다.
But there were those who reached out to Kwon and held her close.
"이 사건은 변호사들이 나서서 고발인이 돼야 한다"
“In this case, lawyers have to step forward and file complaints.”
변호사 조영래를 비롯한 199명의 변호인단은 현실을 외면하지 않았습니다.
Lawyer Jo and 199 other lawyers did not avoid the reality.
그들은 끈질긴 법정투쟁 끝에 가해자인 경찰을 구속시켰으며 마침내 1990년에는 국가를 상대로 한 소송에서 승소하기에 이릅니다.
After throwing themselves into the court battles, they persistently pursued the case until they finally won against the state in 1990 and arrested the assailant.

서지현 검사가 추행을 당했던 그 시간.
Prosecutor Seo Ji-hyun was sexually harrassed.
그 자리에 함께한 검사들에 대한 참고인 조사가 진행될 예정이라고 합니다.
It has been reported that there will be a investigation of the other prosecutors who were with Seo during the time.
피해자는 분명히 존재하지만 가해자는 부정하고 목격자는 존재하지 않는 것이 대다수의 성폭력 사건이라는데…그들은 보지 못했을까, 혹은 외면했을까, 아니면 보고도 그냥 두었을까…
The victims are crystal clear, but in the majority of sexual abuse cases, the assailants deny their crimes and witnesses are nonexistent… Did they really miss the crime taking place? Have they silently turned their heads away or did they just leave the crimes be?

32년 전의 권양, 아니 권인숙은 이미 십 년 전 한 언론 인터뷰를 통해 이렇게 말한 바 있었습니다.
Thirty-two years ago, Miss Kwon, or Kwon In-suk, spoke out about how she felt about the case in an interview more than 10 years prior.
"나는 구시대의 인물이다"
“I am a fading person from the old era.”
이제는 세상이 좀 달라져야 한다는 당위와 소망을 품고 있었을 그 말.
Her words contain a sense of hope and a firm assertion that the world has to change.
그러나 지금 그가 만나고 있는 세상은… 그가 만날 또 다른 권인숙, 서지현은. 그때의 자신과는 다른 모습일까…
But the world she is seeing today… Will the victims that she’ll be meeting in the future -- another Kwon, another Seo -- be any different from the past?
32년 전 조영래 변호사가 며칠 밤을 새가며 써냈던… 당시의 그 변론문은 또한 이렇게 말하고 있습니다.
Another part of the Jo’s statement that he wrote after several sleepless nights… ring true with bitter reality:
"국가가, 사회가, 우리들이
그녀에게 무엇을 하였으며
지금까지도 하고 있는가"
