An Hee-jung resigned as the governor of South Chungcheong and from politics after his secretary went on TV to bluntly accuse him of multiple rapes. The police has embarked on an investigation and the prosecution will follow suit after the victim reports the crimes to prosecutors. An has been forced to end his 29-year political career. Once dubbed as a presidential hopeful, he has now become a suspect for sexual assault.

Many are dumbfounded by the hypocrisy of a politician with a fresh image who won voters through his centrist views and reasoning. Citizens rushed to his residence with baseball bats and the South Chungcheong government website was bombarded with critical comments. A women’s rights association demanded a strong punishment as An’s crime is a typical case of power-based sexual violence.

The Me Too movement has gained momentum because it values the victims. Kim Ji-eun, An’s secretary, said in the JTBC newsroom that she came on TV to expose An’s misconduct and to plead for public protection. She said she also hoped her actions could encourage other victims to come forward.

The people must answer and support her courage. Some suspect her intentions. These accusations can cause victims even more pain. A move by TeamSteelBird, a group of fans and followers of An on Twitter, stood out. As soon as the scandal erupted, the group announced that it was closing down because it “had lost faith” in An and pledged support for the victim. The victim said she did not get any help despite repeated calls for help. She was alone in her first ordeal. Society must stand behind Kim in her difficult journey forward.

통합의 가치를 강조하는 '합리적 진보'이면서 참신하고 깨끗한 이미지를 정치적 자산으로 가졌던 그의 허상이 폭로되면서 분노하고 허탈해하는 이들이 많다. 도지사 관사에 야구방망이가 날아들고 충남도청 홈페이지는 한때 마비됐다. 한국여성단체연합은 어제 성명서에서 "안 지사의 범죄는 명백한 권력형 성폭력"이라며 "정치활동 중단 등의 도의적 책임 수준으로 면피해서는 안 된다"고 밝혔다.
성폭력 피해 고발 운동인 '미투(#MeToo)'에서 중요한 것은 피해자 중심주의다. 성폭행을 폭로한 김지은씨는 JTBC 인터뷰에서 "국민들이 저를 좀 지켜줬으면 좋겠고 진실이 밝혀질 수 있도록 도와줬으면 좋겠다"고 말했다. 다른 피해자가 있으며 그들에게 용기를 주고 싶었다는 말도 했다.
두려움을 떨쳐내고 힘들게 미투 고백에 나선 김지은씨를 국민이 지켜줘야 한다. 하지만 인터넷에선 인터뷰 시기 등을 언급하며 음모설을 퍼뜨리거나 말초적인 호기심만 충족시키려는 이들이 있다. 이는 성폭력 피해자에 심각한 2차 피해를 주는 몰지각한 행위다. 이런 점에서 안 지사의 트위터 지지자 그룹인 '팀스틸버드(@TeamSteelBird)'의 선택은 주목할 만하다. 이들은 "가해자의 정치 철학은 더 이상 우리에게 의미가 없다"며 지지를 철회하며 활동 종료를 선언했다. 또한 "이번 사건에서 가해자가 아닌 피해자의 곁에 서겠다"며 "피해자에게 연대와 지지를 전하며 향후 2차 가해에 함께 대응할 것"이라고 선언했다. 팀스틸버드처럼 국민 모두 김씨와 함께했으면 한다.
