GOT7 writes their way to the top
Idol group GOT7 is back with a new album called “Eyes On You.” [JYP ENTERTAINMENT]
The group released their latest mini-album “Eyes On You” on March 12. The project includes songs written and composed by the members themselves. The album also features a song written especially for their fans, titled “Thank You.”
“The song is for the fans and we wanted to truly express our gratitude in the lyrics. The lyrics show how we’re both sorry and thankful to our fans. We received many awards last year, and it’s all thanks to our fans,” said Park during an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
The group discussed how they prepared for the new album, the songs they wrote and their tour plans. The following are excerpts from the interview.
Q. You guys have finally returned with a new album after a five-month-hiatus. How do you feel?
A. JB: We’ve been quick to prepare this album. The preparation period was short, but we’ve put in so much effort. After our 2017 year-end performance, each of us separately brainstormed the concept for our next album so when we finally met to discuss the album, we were able to organize our ideas and quickly finish the album.
I heard that JB composed the song “Look.” I know this is the second single you have written. How do you feel about that accomplishment, JB?
JB: I’m very happy about it. I was a bit worried when my song was chosen as the lead single for our last album. I was concerned that the song might get a negative response and cause trouble for the group. I was also anxious about this song, but thankfully, it turned out well. I am confident in this song.
Choi, can you talk a little about the song you wrote, “Hesitate?”
Choi: It’s the first song I ever wrote and it is about unrequited love, which is something everyone can relate to. I started off playing notes on the piano and gradually added lyrics to the music. I kept working on it, making changes and improvements to the song before I played it to our producer Park Jin-young and he decided to add the song to our album.
Your album also features “One and Only You,” a collaboration with Hyolyn from disbanded girl group Sistar. What was that like?
JB: I was friends with Hyolyn so we decided to work together. I was worried because it was our group’s first time collaborating with another artist. I was also scared that the song might get a negative response, but we had fun recording the song. I was surprised when we received such good feedback on the song after we released it early.
How is your popularity in Korea different from when you’re abroad?
JB: To put it frankly, I think we get a better response abroad. I think it’s because we have members from many different backgrounds. Our fans like that we don’t need interpreters to communicate with them.
Any plans on a world tour?
BamBam: We’re going to be touring Europe and South America for the first time. And we’re going to be performing in bigger stadiums than our last world tour, so we’re very excited. Our group has prepared a lot and our biggest plan this year is to smoothly finish this world tour and get a good response on our new album.

갓세븐 ”JB 만든 타이틀곡, 들으면 들을수록 좋다”
5년차 그룹 갓세븐이 자신만의 음악 색깔을 담아낸 앨범으로 더 큰 도약을 앞두고 있다. 12일 오후 6시 발매되는 갓세븐의 새 앨범 'Eyes On You(아이즈 온 유)'의 타이틀곡 'Look(룩)'은 리더 JB의 자작곡이다. 갓세븐은 지난 앨범 '7 for 7(세븐 포 세븐)'의 타이틀곡 'You Are(유 아)'에 이어 이번에도 JB가 만든 곡을 타이틀로 정했다. 까다로운 JYP엔터테인먼트 내부 전문가 평가와 멤버들의 의견을 종합해 JB의 자작곡이 타이틀곡으로 선정했다는 점에서 의미하는 바가 크다. 음악적으로 더욱 성장했다는 뜻. 또한 멤버 뱀뱀이 작사 작곡에 참여한 팝 댄스 곡 'The Reason(더 리즌)'과 멤버 유겸이 만든 곡 '우리', 멤버 영재가 기타 선율을 베이스로 작곡한 곡 '망설이다' 등 멤버들이 작사, 작곡진으로 이름을 올린 곡들도 완성도가 높다. 5개월 만에 앨범을 선보이면서 각 국가 별로 1만석 이상 규모를 키운 월드 투어 준비까지 알차게 하고 있다. 올해 갓세븐의 활약이 기대되는 이유다.
-5개월 만에 컴백한다. 소감은.
JB "빠른 시일 내에 준비해서 나왔다. 준비 기간은 짧았지만 알차게 준비해서 나왔다. 연말 무대를 하고 각자 앨범에 대한 컨셉트를 (머릿 속에) 가지고 만나 다음 앨범에 대한 얘기를 해서 그런지 의견이 빨리 정리돼 앨범도 빨리 나왔다."
-이번에 컴백하면서 가장 신경쓴 부분은.
뱀뱀 "노래도 신경을 많이 썼고, 안무에도 많은 변화를 줬다. 안무는 항상 앞을 보고 춰야한다는 게(고정관념) 있지 않나. 이번엔 카메라 앵글을 갖고 놀면서 옆도 보여주고 뒤도 보여주고, 다양하게 바꿔가면서 퍼포먼스를 펼치는 무대를 선보인다."
JB "즐기면서 무대를 한다는 느낌을 주고 싶어서 그 점을 신경을 많이 썼다. 스타일링 부분에서도 색다른 모습을 보여주려고 노력했다."
-이번에도 JB의 자작곡이 타이틀곡이다.
JB "기뻤다. 지난 번 처음 타이틀곡이 됐을 때 걱정이 많았다. 내 노래로 타이틀곡이 되는 게 괜히 팀에 해가 되는게 아닐지에 대한 걱정이었다. 이번에도 걱정을 하긴 했는데 다행히 잘 나온 것 같다. 이번 타이틀곡에 대한 자신감이 있다."
-멤버 영재가 쓴 '망설이다'에 대한 소개도 부탁한다.
영재 "인생에서 처음 쓴 곡이다. 누구에게나 있을 법한 짝사랑 노래를 썼다. 피아노에 가사를 얹어서 노래를 만들기 시작했는데 편곡을 하면서 계속 수정해가면서 박진영 피디님께 들려줘서 최종 수록곡으로 뽑히게 됐다."
-씨스타 출신 효린과의 컬래버레이션 곡 '너 하나만'도 수록했다.
JB "효린 누나와 개인적인 친분이 있어서 같이 하게 됐다. 첫 컬래버레이션이라서 걱정이 많았다. 생각보다 반응이 좋지 않으면 어쩌지라는 고민이 있었는데 일단 작업 자체가 재밌어서 좋았다. 또 선공개곡으로 공개해 반응도 좋아서 놀라웠다."
-이번 앨범엔 팬들을 위한 곡도 있다. 곡명은 '고마워'다.
진영 "제목 그대로 팬 분들께 '고맙다'는 마음을 담았다. 팬 분들께 고마운데 표현을 자주 못 했던 것 같아서 이번에 팬 분들을 위해 곡을 만들고 싶었다. 가사를 보면 뭔가 미안하다는 말도 많고, 마지막에 고마워라는 말도 나오는데 그 가사가 딱 우리 마음인 것 같다. 팬들을 생각하면 미안하고 고맙다. 지난해에 시상식에서 상을 많이 받았는데 팬 분들이 준 상이라고 생각한다.
-갓세븐의 국내외 인기와 반응을 비교해본다면.
JB "냉정하게 한국도 반응이 좋긴 한데 외국이 더 반응이 좋다. 아무래도 다국적인 멤버로 구성된 그룹이라 그런 것 같다. 어딜 가든 통역 없이 팬들과 바로 소통이 자유로우니깐 그 점을 팬 분들도 좋아해주시는 것 같다."
-올해 월드 투어 계획이 있다.
뱀뱀 "이 전에 간 적 없는 유럽과 남미까지 간다. 또 저번 월드투어 보다 규모도 키웠다. 모든 나라 공연장 사이즈를 넓혔다. 월드 투어가 많이 기대된다. 새롭게 많은 걸 보여주고 싶어서 다양한 무대를 준비하고 있다. 올해 제일 큰 플랜은 월드 투어를 잘 마치고 좋은 앨범 성적을 얻는 것이다."
