Lee Seung-gi is ready to dig deep

[CJ ENTERTAINMENT]

BY CHO YEON-GYEONG

Actor, singer and entertainer Lee Seung-gi has returned after a two-year stint in the military and he’s eager to get back to work. In the less than six months it has been since he finished his military duties, he’s already appeared in a film, a drama and a variety show.

Ever since the 31-year-old made his debut as a teenage singer in 2004, Lee has been pursuing a career across many forms of entertainment and his fans have loved every single moment of it. Beginning with “Because You’re My Woman,” the song that shot Lee to fame after his debut, Lee has established a very likeable image of himself to audiences.

“If something turns out well, I don’t believe that was because of me,” said Lee in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “It’s because I had a good balance with the people that I worked with. Everything I’ve done has been possible because I have had staff and family that have supported me.”

As enthusiastic as he was to get back to work, his recent projects have not been the successes he was hoping for. The film “The Princess and the Matchmaker” had lower ticket sales than anticipated and a member of the production staff fell and was injured while shooting the tvN drama “A Korean Odyssey,” which wrapped up on March 4. Nonetheless, the actor-singer is prepared for any role that comes his way.

“I don’t care about the importance of the role. I only care that there’s a chance for me to change with a good character, alongside good actors,” said Lee. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

Lee Seung-gi has recently starred in the comedy romance “The Princess and the Matchmaker,” top, and the tvN drama “A Korean Odyssey.” [SCREEN CAPTURE]

Q. You’ve been very busy since you were dismissed from the military. How has that been going?

A.
I told people that I would show them everything until they became fed up with me, and to be honest I think I was bluffing a little back then (laughs). Frankly, I didn’t even know I would be doing this much. I did think about one thing, which was whether I could make it physically, and whether I could make it through the schedule. But I have all this energy that I saved up inside the army, and now I’m using it.

Was it difficult finishing “A Korean Odyssey,” after a staff member got injured?

It would have been better if nothing happened, but an unfortunate accident took place, and there’s no other way around it. You never know when, where and how these kinds of things are going to happen. It’s not like we can control it. But now that [the safety issue] has been brought up in the industry, I hope things turn out for the better and improve.

You’ve been a part of many romantic stories. Did you purposefully only choose that type of work?

I actually have this desire to show the audience a side of myself that I haven’t shown before. It doesn’t have to be a big role, it can even be a villain. I would like to work with some good veteran actors, though. I’m open to suggestions. But people tend to not consider me a fit for some roles because of roles that I’ve done before.

Why do you think people like you?

I just try my best everyday and at every moment. And so I’m just grateful [for everything]. When you’re on set, there are separate roles done by the director, a role for an actor and roles for the staff. The important thing is to do your job well.

Do you have any plans of returning as a singer?

I would really like to. I had the chance to host a music award program after I was dismissed from the army. The whole time I thought, “Ah, I want to sing,” while watching the singers performing on stage. But [to be a singer], you have to always be taking care of your physical condition and your throat, so I decided to focus on other things.

When people ask you whether you’re a singer or an actor, what do you tell them?

I have no second thoughts about my identity now. Right now, I believe I am an entertainer. But not the kind that just tries a little bit of this and that, but one that really pulls off whatever he is given. Actor Lee Seung-gi or singer Lee Seung-gi, I want to do well whatever I am called.

What you do write on the occupation line of your passport?

Oh, that still reads singer (laughs). Regardless of everything, the thing that’s closest to my heart is music.

You debuted when you were a teenager, but now you’re in your 30s. What thoughts do you have on life?

I had a lot of doubts when I was in my 20s, but now I think I can handle everything. I think the 30s are about minimizing doubt and walking straight. This isn’t the time for me to be choosing which characters to do, but a time to dig deeper into what I’ve already done.
