Lee Jang-hoon’s debut film is a labor of love
Stars So Ji-sub and Son Ye-jin feature in the film, making it seem as if Lee’s spotlight is all thanks to their roles. But in reality, this newbie director has greatly contributed to the movie’s success. Currently, more than a million people have watched this film, and the film has been in the top two at the local box office since its release.
“Be With You” is a remake of a Japanese film which was adapted by the novel of the same name. It revolves around imagery of rain and the theme of first love, leaving a dreary but magical impression throughout the film. To learn more, Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, sat down with the director for an interview. The following are edited excerpts.
Q. This is your debut. What is your goal for this film?
A. To be honest, I have nothing to lose, so I just feel happy at the moment. If my previous film received publicity, I would feel pressured by the weight of its popularity. Since that’s not the case, I felt rather relaxed after I finished the filming. Now, I feel that there’s nothing for me to do except wait.
Were there any difficulties while filming the movie?
There was a problem regarding the cost of the production, which I tried to discuss with the producer. Just because I want to do something doesn’t mean that I am able to do so. Basically, I tried my best to stick to the movie schedule. My rule is to only film scenes that are necessary. Because of this, people surrounding me worried [about the result]. Since I am a newbie director, I tried to direct the film in an efficient manner. Additionally, I have a tendency to feel weak when I try to put everything under my control. Because of that, I felt comfortable during the production of the film.

I had faith in the plot. In order to receive the spotlight in the media, the story needs to have substance. Other factors, such as the casting, directing and background music, are all important, but the most important one is the plot.
What did you think about the casting?
Originally, I was worried that these famous actors would reject this film because of me, a newbie director. Fortunately, Son Ye-jin enjoyed the script, so I was able to get rid of this fear. Initially, I thought that So Ji-sub rejected the film [at first] because of me, but I later found out that it was because of his character. Maybe it was because So also enjoyed the script that I was able to meet him.
How did the main actors react when they first saw the film?
I watched it along with them at the preview. They were sharing tissues to wipe up their tears. I thought it was a good thing that they were crying. Usually, actors don’t cry when they watch their movies because they focus on their acting. But I felt good while watching them wipe their tears.
How is working with So Ji-sub?
People around us say that we were like Tom and Jerry at the press preview (laughs.) He showed a different personality while we were working. After finishing filming, we became more comfortable around each other. I think it’s because there’s some kind of tension that makes us feel cautious.
How about Son Ye-jin?
She is a perfectionist. Even if the director says O.K., she wants to keep filming the same scene if it doesn’t please her. When I first met her, I told her, “You don’t need to check the monitor,” but she replied, “That will never happen.” However, Son became loose about this in the second half of filming (laughs.) To be honest, I liked her first takes because of the slight awkwardness. Later, Son even laughed, saying that “if the director is happy, then I’m happy.” Of course, all the scenes were not taken at a fast pace. For example, there’s one scene where Son and So have a conversation in the balcony, and it took three hours to shoot. I kept shouting, “Let’s have one more take.”
What was the background behind your debut?
I met an extremely valuable person. This person was the head of a film production company. Before meeting [this person], I did not know how important it was to [work with] a more powerful production company. I thought that it only depended on my ability to do well. However, this movie was possible due to the presence of the two heads. Initially, I was preparing the original script and things weren’t going so well. But then, the heads said that if there was a movie that I wanted to produce as a remake, they would obtain the rights to that movie. I thought, “[Why give this chance] to a newbie director? Why me?” I felt that this rare opportunity fell from the skies.
What kind of stories do you want to work on in the future?
Basically, I want to film love stories. It could be either a thriller or an erotic movie. Instead of focusing on the genre, I tend to focus on how good the story is.
Did you have any concerns about working with these big-name actors?
Of course I was worried. Before then, I felt that I was the audience, since I couldn’t see deeply into this [film industry.] I also felt worried about working with such wonderful actors. These two people really helped out while we were filming. We never clashed with each other, since we shared similar opinions. There was nothing severe as a conflict while we were shooting either.
How different is your film from the original Japanese version?
Instead of remaking the film itself, I thought of reinterpreting the novel. While reading the novel, I tried to paint the image of the characters and the situations. The picture that I thought of is different from the original Japanese film. I really liked the pleasant situations of the novel, so I tried to portray that as much as possible. For those who love the original movie, they may prefer the characters in the Japanese film, but I wanted to reinterpret So’s character in a different way.

'지만갑' 감독 ”데뷔작인데 멜로, 다들 '잘 되겠어?'라고 했지만”
이장훈 감독은 데뷔작으로 박스오피스 1위라는 달콤한 열매를 맛 봤다. 소지섭과 손예진의 이름을 업고 주목받는 것 같았건만, 뚜껑을 열어보니 이장훈이라는 이름 세 글자도 선명히 보이는 작품을 통해서다. 일주일째 박스오피스 1위를 지키며 100만 관객 돌파에 성공한 '지금 만나러 갑니다'가 이장훈 감독의 데뷔작이다.
동명의 일본 소설과 영화를 원작으로 한다. 많은 관객들이 이미 결말을 다 알고 있는 '강제 스포일러' 영화다. 그럼에도 불구하고 많은 관객들이 이 영화를 선택했다. 최근 일본 원작을 영화화한 여러 사례들 가운데, '지금 만나러 갑니다'는 흔치 않게 한국 정서가 아주 잘 스며들어 있는 작품이기 때문이다.
이 감독은 '지금 만나러 갑니다'를 통해 바뀐 인생을 살고 있다. 개봉 전부터 차기작 이야기가 오가고, 소지섭과 손예진이라는 두 톱 배우의 마음을 얻었다. "하루 2시간을 자고 인터뷰 강행군을 뛰어도 마냥 신기하고 즐겁기만 하다"는 그다.
-데뷔작이다. 흥행 욕심이 있나.
"설렌다. 그냥 솔직히 잃을 게 없다. 가진 게 없어서다.(웃음) 마냥 즐겁다. 여러편 연출했거나 성공한 작품을 내놓은 다음 하는 거라면 전작에 대한 부담감이 있을 텐데, 난 아니니까. 오히려 할 일을 다 하고 나니 편해졌다. 이제는 기다리는 것밖에 할 게 없다. 흥행 욕심이야 당연히 생긴다. 물론 개봉 당시 상황이 어떨지, 무슨 일이 벌어질지 모르는 거니까 불가항력적인 문제인 것 같다. 어떤 상황이 오더라도 투자하신 분들에게 손해가 가지 않는 선까지는 갔으면 좋겠다."
-제작비를 많이 들이지 않는 편인가.
"제작비 문제는 PD님과 상의하려고 했다. 내가 하고 싶다고 해서 다 할 수 있는 건 아니니까. 기본적으로는 스케줄에 최대한 맞추려고 노력한다. 꼭 쓸 것만 찍자는 주의다. 이런 점 때문에 주변에서 걱정하기도 했다. 나는 신인감독이고 마냥 시간을 쓸 수 있는 것도 아니기 때문에 최대한 경제적을오 뽑아내려고 한다."
-긍정적인 성격이다.
"평소 긍정적으로 살려고 한다. 나도 과거엔 날카롭게 예민하고 계획대로 안되면 못 견디는 성격이었다. 그런 면이 있었는데, 오랫동안 힘든 시기를 겪다보니 그렇게 사는 게 스스로 너무 힘들더라. '그렇게 안달하면서 산다고 해도 세상이 내 맘대로 되지 않는구나'를 많이 느꼈다. 모든 걸 다 쥐고 있으려면 손에 힘이 풀려버리는 거다. 그런 마음 때문에 영화를 만드는 과정에서도 조금은 더 편안하게 만들 수 있지 않나 생각한다."
-멜로는 충무로에서 환영받지 못하는 장르다. 그럼에도 도전했다.
"다들 '멜로 나올 때가 되긴 했어' 그런 이야기를 하지만 결국 '잘 되겠어?'라고 반문한다. 그러나 나는 이 이야기에 대한 믿음이 있었다. 결국 관객들의 사랑을 받으려면 이야기의 힘이 있어야 한다. 배우나 연출, 음악 이런 것들도 중요하지만 가장 중심은 이야기다."
-데뷔작임에도 불구하고 더할 나위 없이 좋은 캐스팅이다.
"처음엔 자격지심이 있었다. 신인감독인 나 때문에 이 영화를 하지 않을 거라는 자격지심. 다행히 손예진은 시나리오를 재밌게 봐줬기 때문에 그런 불안감을 불식시킬 수 있었던 것 같다. 소지섭은 처음에 나 때문에 거절한 것이라 생각했는데, 나중에 알고보니 본인의 캐릭터 때문이었다고 하더라. 소지섭도 시나리오를 좋게 봐준 것인지, 또 한 번 귀인을 만날 수 있었다."
-영화를 처음 본 배우들의 반응은 어땠나.
"시사회 때 같이 봤는데, 다행히 두 사람이 휴지를 나눠서 쓰명서 울더라. 다행이라고 생각했다. 사실 배우들은 처음 자기 영화를 볼때는 자신의 연기만 보게 돼서 잘 안 운다. 그런데 옆을 봤더니 휴지로 눈물을 닦고 있기에 기분이 좋았다."
-공식석상에서 소지섭과 티격태격하는 모습으로 자주 웃음을 선사했다.
"다들 톰과 제리 같다고 하더라. 하하하. 소지섭도 재밌어해줬다. 촬영 현장에서는 그렇게 깐족대지 않는다. 촬영이 끝나고 나서 관계가 더 편해졌다. 현장에서는 알게 모르게 긴장감이 있고 조심해야 된다는 생각이 있으니까 그런 것 같다. 내가 마냥 즐거워서 약간 '오버'하는 경향이 있는데 소지섭이 잘 받아준다.(웃음)"
-늦게 데뷔했다.
"귀인을 만났다. 제작사 대표님들이 나에겐 귀인이다. 그 전까지는 제작사의 힘이 그렇게 중요한지 몰랐다. 나만 잘하면 되는줄 알았다. 그러나 이 영화는 전적으로 두 대표님이 있기에 가능했다. 처음엔 오리지널 시나리오를 준비하고 있었는데 잘 안 풀렸다. 그러다 대표님들이 리메이크해보고 싶은 원작이 있으면 판권을 풀어주겠다고 하더라. '신인감독에게? 왜 나에게?'라고 생각했다. 나에게 그런 기회를 준다는 것 자체가 정말 하늘이 준 기회였다."
-오리지널 시나리오는 어떤 이야기를 쓰고 있었나.
"기본적으로 사랑이야기를 하고 싶다. 스릴러일 수도 있고 에로틱할 수도 있다. 장르에 대한 집착보다는 좋은 스토리에 더 집중하는 편이다."
-톱 배우들과의 호흡은 걱정되지 않았나.
"당연히 걱정은 됐다. 그 전까진 이 바닥(영화계)에 깊숙히 들어가보지 못했기 때문에 관객의 입장에 더 가까웠다. 그냥 여배우와 스타라는 배우의 모습은 이럴 거라는 선입견이 있엇다. 걱정도 많이 했다. 대단한 배우들과 어떻게 같이 일할 수 있을까 걱정했다. 두 사람이 현장에서 진짜 많이 도와줬다. 단 한번도 제대로 부딪쳐 본적이 없다. 각자의 생각들이 크게 차이가 없었기 때문이기도 하다. 현장에서도 특별히 갈등이라고 할만한 것이 없었다."
