Korean hip-hop gets too explicit

테스트

Sexism has been an on-going topic of discussion in the Korean hip-hop community. Though it has been a huge controversy, many argue that nothing has been done to combat the issue.

Last spring, rapper Black Nut came under fire for saying in his song “Too Real” that he masturbated to a picture of female rapper KittiB who has appeared on the Mnet rap competition program “Unpretty Rapstar.”

In response to the explicit lyrics, KittiB took to social media saying that although she had acted like the song did not bother her, she was actually deeply offended and traumatized by people mocking her and spreading rumors about her due to the content of song.

The female rapper took legal action against Black Nut on May 25, 2017, filing a lawsuit for abusive and insulting language.

With many of Black Nut’s songs containing lyrics mocking women, netizens began to question whether offensive speech should be tolerated for the sake of hip-hop.

Black Nut is not the only rapper who has found himself caught up in controversy for offensive lyrics about women. Rapper Nafla received criticism for his latest song “Flower,” which was released on March 1. Some lyrics in the song include, “Soybean paste goes great with you” and “Now that you’re in the top 10, did you have a change of heart? [You] open up wide for a sugar daddy rather than someone one or two years older [than you].” Soybean paste or doenjang in Korean refers to the slang phrase “doenjang woman,” which is used to describe girls addicted to luxury and vanity.

In 2015, boy group Winner’s rapper Song Min-ho was forced to apologize to gynecologists after associating the profession with offensive lyrics during a rap battle on season 4 of “Show Me the Money.” During a rap freestyle on the show, Song rapped, “Mino targets all the daughters, spread [your legs] like you’re at the gynecologist.”

While the judges on the show were apparently impressed with the rapper’s performance, officials at the Korean Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists were less enamored, demanding an apology from Song. They wrote a complaint saying, “Not only did the lyrics humiliate women of Korea, but it also defamed 4,000 obstetrics and gynecology doctors registered in our association.”

Song quickly apologized to the association and ended the feud. In an apology letter, he wrote, “[I think] the pressure of having to write more provocative lyrics to compete against the other competent rappers in this program brought on this malevolent result.”

Thanks to the popularity of shows like “Show Me the Money” and “Unpretty Rapstar,” hip-hop is currently the most popular genre in Korea.

Cultural critic Yun Gwang said, “The issues began with so-called diss battles, which is a battle where you insult and disrespect your opponent with rap.”

As rappers try their best to come up with more provocative and explicit rhymes, hip-hop has quickly evolved to focus on cursing others and bringing them down. Many male rappers have a tendency to objectify women and make sexual references in their rap lyrics as a way to show off an air of braggadocio.

Hip-hop began as a subculture and art movement in New York City in the late 1970s, made up of rapping, break dancing, graffiti and more. But some could argue that most Korean hip-hop artists just follow a stereotype of being hypermasculine and aggressive without any understanding of the foundation and purpose of the culture. It has become prevalent for Korean hip-hop artists and fans to merely brush off hip-hop critics by saying that, “Hip-hop has always been that way.”
