Pop star Yura catches the acting bug

Although the drama, which revolves around the crew of a radio program, didn’t receive as much attention as it hoped for, it gave Yura the makeover she needed to shed her image from an idol to a mature actor. For the first time, she played a villain, but managed to do so without losing the love of her fans.
“‘Radio Romance’ was a work that became a huge stepping stone for me in acting,” said Yura in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “I felt so much and experienced a lot of things through this. I’d like to keep trying new and diverse characters. I’m filled with a lot of willpower right now.”
In a recent interview after the drama wrapped, Yura showed her energy and passion for her new profession, which she wishes to keep pursuing. “I’ve felt the charms of being an actor, and I want to do more and different things,” said Yura.
The following are edited excerpts of Yura’s interview held at a cafe in Seongdong District, eastern Seoul.
Q. “Radio Romance” had a shaky start, after the producer was replaced early on. Did that bother you when you came to set?
A. Not really, because I was just eager to get a good start on the beginning of the drama. And it was really cold. Some actors had to be soaked in water while shooting their scenes, but I shot most of my scenes inside a studio. But above all, everything was finished with a good atmosphere and nobody got hurt. I had a nice experience and made good memories from it. I also connected with my fellow actors.
But wasn’t the mood a little awkward on set?
Actually, the atmosphere was really good. I came in to shoot two weeks after the first day. Maybe that’s the reason why, but all the actors were smiling at the time. They were all really nice people.
The viewership ratings were lower than expected, are you okay with that?
Personally, I think that the ratings were low because people like to watch [dramas and other programs] on their smartphones rather than television, or on the internet. If all of those views were added up, then our [viewership ratings] would easily pass 10 percent. It’s all about information technology these days. If it had been in the past, when people only watched television, then the viewership ratings would have been higher.
Do you read the comments online about you or your drama?
I just read the ones that get the most likes. I tend not to read the vicious ones. I used to read every single one of them when I was a newbie, and now everything’s become so natural to me. It’s obvious to say whether a product is good or bad after seeing it. I think that [being] a celebrity is a job that has to win over the hearts of the public. So some may like you, but others may not. I think all of that is natural. Even when I watch a drama, I say that it’s fun when I think it’s fun. It makes sense to express the things you feel.
What do you do when some of the comments go too far?
It’s okay to give some critical feedback, but if it’s just downright vicious, then I report them [to the police]. There’s people who belittle me in every single article written about me. Sometimes I feel like they’re my biggest fans, because they’re the ones to post a comment before anyone else. So I don’t really get hurt by them.
Did you learn a lot about acting through “Radio Romance”?
I think acting gets more difficult the more you get to know it. But I did learn a lot through this work. I learned to concentrate and how to work with other actors. There was a scene where I had to storm out in tears. In the past, I had to put in fake tears before because I couldn’t cry, but with that particular scene, I was able to cry even when I wasn’t on camera. I think I empathized well with the character. But I’ve still got much more to learn.
You made your debut in November 2010. How have you and the other members of Girl’s Day been able to get along so well after so many years?
I think it’s mostly because the members aren’t the type of people who like to pick fights. And since we are all of different ages, there’s not much to fight about. Even when we have something we want to say, we do so by using very nice words. And in the end, we just like each other a lot.
Are you planning to continue acting? If so, what kind of roles would you like to play in the future?
I would like to continue, but I can’t if nobody wants me (laughs). I’d like to try various things, especially action [scenes]; something where I have to ride on horses and shoot arrows. Maybe a female warrior? I want to try out a role that’s tough and cool. A killer, maybe. I’m confident with those things because I’ve been working out since I was very little.

유라 ”일대일로 눈 마주쳤는데 인사 안 한 후배 있다”
걸스데이로 꽉찬 8년을 채운 시점에서 유라가 한 단계 성장했다. KBS 2TV '라디오 로맨스' 진태리를 만나면서다.
유라는 이번 작품을 통해 연기에 대한 욕심이 생겼다. 늘 밝고 명랑한 역만 하다가 '악역'에 처음 도전했다. 새로운 역을 고민하고 표현하는 것에 재미를 느끼기 시작한 것. 무리 없이 진태리를 소화했고, 밉지 않은 악역을 표현했다며 호평도 받았다.
유라는 최근 서울 성동구 한 카페에서 일간스포츠와 '라디로 로맨스' 종영 인터뷰를 가졌다. 유라는 활기 넘치는 에너지를 뿜었다. 연기 얘기를 할 때 유독 눈이 초롱초롱해졌고 집중력을 보였다. 새로운 분야에 대한 갈망이 느껴졌다.
앞으로 액션을 찍고 싶다는 유라. 몸 쓰는 것만큼은 자신있다고 선언했다. 유라의 변신이 기대된다.
- '라디오 로맨스' 초반에 스태프가 교체되는 등 분위기가 뒤숭숭했다. 불안하진 않았나.
"그것보다 드라마 첫 시작이라서 으샤으샤 하자는 마음이 컸다. 그리고 정말 추웠다. 다른 배우들은 야외에서 물에도 빠지면서 찍었는데, 나는 스튜디오 촬영이 많아서 미안했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 좋은 분위기에서 열심히 촬영했고, 아무도 아프지 않고 마무리 돼서 다행이다. 좋은 추억이고 경험이었다. 좋은 동료를 얻은 작품이다."
- 징조가 좋지 않았을 텐데.
"희안하게 현장 분위기가 좋았다. 난 첫 촬영 2주 뒤에 합류했다. 그래서 그랬나. 배우들 성격이 좋아서 하하호호하면서 찍었다. B팀을 많이 찍었는데 A팀에 합류하고 싶었다.(웃음)"
- 시청률이 살짝 아쉽다.
"개인적인 생각이지만 요즘엔 사람들이 TV를 안 보고 스마트폰으로 다시보기나 짤로 보지 않나. 이런 것 다 합하면 10%를 넘을 거다. 요즘엔 정보화 시대다. TV만 보는 옛날이었다면 8%?"
- 댓글들을 챙겨보는 편인가.
"공감순으로만 본다. 악플은 넘기는 스타일이다. 신인 때는 하나하나 다 봤는데 이제는 정말 자연스러운 일이다. 어떤 물건을 봐도 '좋다' '아니다'라는 평가를 하지 않나. 연예인은 대중의 마음의 사는 직업이다. 누구는 좋아할 수 있지만 싫을 수도 있다. 자연스러운 일이라고 생각한다. 나도 어떤 드라마를 보고 재밌으면 재밌다고 한다. 내 감정을 표현하는데 당연하지 않나."
- 악플이 수위를 넘을 때가 있다.
"냉정한 평가는 자연스러운 일이지만, 악의적으로 다는 건 신고감이다. 내 기사마다 욕하는 사람이 있다. 어떻게 보면 가장 팬같다. 팬 보다 빨리 댓글을 단다. 그런 분들은 누구보다 팬같다. 그래도 상처를 받진 않는다."
- 이 작품을 통해 연기에 대해 많이 배웠나.
"연기는 알면 알수록 어렵다. 대신 이번 작품 통해서 깨달은 게 많았다. 집중하는 법을 배웠고 배우와 호흡을 주고 받는 것을 알게 됐다. 폭풍 오열하는 신이 있었다. 예전엔 눈물이 안 나와서 티어 스틱도 썼는데, 이번엔 촬영이 아닐 때도 눈물이 났다. 그만큼 태리 감정 이입이 잘됐던 것 같다. 딕션도 연습을 많이 했다. 그래도 아직 부족하다."
- 멤버들이 조언도 해주나.
"우리끼리 만나면 일 얘긴 잘 안한다. 그냥 '옷 이쁘더라' '봤어요' '이런 건 어렵다' 등의 이야기를 나눈다. 대부분 경험담이다. 예전만큼은 아니지만 자주 만난다. 혜리는 볼링장 가면 있고, 민아와는 발레를 한다. 소진 언니는 수시로 만나서 얘기를 많이 한다."
- 2010년 11월에 데뷔해 꽉찬 8년이다. 아이돌 7년 징크스 이긴 비결은.
"내 생각이지만 싸우는 성격들이 아니고, 나이 차이가 있다보니 싸울 일이 없다. 서운한 것도 원하는 것도 고운 말로 왔다갔다 한다. 반말 쓰는 사람들도 없다. 존댓말을 끝까지 쓰는 것도 걸스데이가 오래가는 이유인 것 같다. 민아와 한 살 차인데 아직도 존댓말한다. 그리고 서로를 너무 좋아한다."
- 연기는 계속할 생각인가.
"찾아만 주신다면 계속 하고 싶다. 안 찾아 주면 못 한다.(웃음)"
- 어떤 연기를 하고 싶나.
"다양한 걸 하고 싶은데 특히 액션에 관심이 있다. 몸 쓰는 걸 좋아한다. 사극도 좋다. 치마 입고 그런 거 말고 바지 입고 말 타고 활 잘 쏘는 캐릭터. 여자 호위 무사 같은 역을 해보고 싶다. 터프한데 멋있는 역이 탐난다. 총 잘 쏘는 것도 킬러도 멋있다. 어릴 때부터 합기도, 태권도를 다녀서 자신있다."
- 액션은 의외다.
"의외로 여자 배우 중에 이런 걸 소화할 수 있는 분들이 많지 않은 것 같다. 김옥빈 선배님이 '악녀'에서 혼자 액션을 다 했다고 하는데 나도 그런 느낌의 연기를 하고 싶다. 체력은 진짜 자신 있다. 잠 안 자기 내기하면 1등한다. 지치지 않는다. 와이어 타고 이런 게 좋다."
- 5억 짜리 다리 보험을 들었는데 괜찮나.
"안 다치게 해야죠. 조금 다쳐도 괜찮다.(웃음)"
- 앞으로 활동 계획은.
"이번 작품 통해서 많은 걸 느끼고 경험했다. 다음 작품을 위해 계속 연기 연습을 할거고 다양한 캐릭터를 도전하고 싶다. 지금 의욕이 넘친다."
- '라디오 로맨스'가 유라 연기 인생에 많은 걸 바꿨나.
"연기에 있어서 큰 발판이 된 작품이다. 연기 매력을 또한번 느꼈다. 늘 밝은 걸 했는데 다른 걸 해보니 느낌이 다르더라. 더 다른 것도 해보고 싶다는 욕심이 들었다. 볼링처럼 실력으로 인정받고 싶다."
