The king of television soundtracks

The show’s theme song “Painful Love” has been performing well on the charts ever since its release on major music streaming sites in February, and it topped the Gaon Music Chart’s ringtone list for over five weeks. Just as the title indicates, the song tells the story of how the two main characters, played by actors Kim Nam-joo and Ji Jin-hee, have struggled through their relationship.
In the drama, Kim plays an ambitious news anchorwoman Go Hye-ran, who married Ji’s character, prosecutor Gang Tae-wook, who was raised in a legal family, to climb her way up the social ladder. Despite her goals of securing herself a higher social standing, Gang says that he married her because he truly loves her. He kills Go’s former lover out of jealousy, but never shares that information with her, until she finds out.
A song also performed by Lee that plays whenever Gang appears on screen, titled “Someday,” has also been garnering much attention. “Heart-aching deep injury/ Even when it becomes poisonous and overpowers you/ I will still embrace you,” the lyrics go.

He then asked if there were any other songs and received “Painful Love.” He had to ask whether he could make some corrections to the song, saying that he was quite an “expert in adding an extra touch” to already completed songs.
He even wrote a lyric to one of the songs called “Painful Love.” He was debating what to write for about a week, and the inspiration came all of the sudden when he was looking at snow at a ski resort. He finished writing in about 10 minutes, and the song was put in from the third episode of the drama.
He usually watches the first one or two episodes of a drama and then gets to work on writing the songs. For this project, he said he didn’t get to read the script separately, but the lyrics made a great fit to the overall flow of the drama, much to his surprise.
“That Person,” a song from the 2010 drama “Bread, Love and Dreams,” and “Fate,” from the 2004 TV drama “Pheonix,” are some of his biggest hits.
Thanks to many fans who have embraced his songs featured in soap operas and films, he plans to put together a compilation album with some of the popular songs he sung for dramas and release it in the fall.
“It could be fun to put songs into different genres so that it would be easy [for fans] to find songs that suit their tastes,” Lee said.
The singer, who has been a singer for 33 years, has a different view on performing well on the music charts.
“There’s no need to feel bad about the fact that pop groups overwhelm the music charts,” said Lee. “My fans are in their 40s and 50s, so it seems about right that I am doing well on the chart for ringtones. The areas of specialties are getting more detailed, so I need to focus more on the music I can do.”
He is looking to have busier days from now. He is in the process of planning a U.S. tour, as well as a collaboration concert featuring classical music and gugak, or traditional Korean music. He also appears on many entertainment programs and is also working on a documentary.

OST 황제 이승철, 나는 늘 새롭다
드라마는 끝나도 OST는 끝나지 않았다. 24일 종영한 JTBC드라마 ‘미스티’의 메인 테마곡 ‘사랑은 아프다’는 여전히 인기가 굳건하다. 지난달 17일 음원 발매 이후 5주 넘게 가온차트 벨소리 부문 1위를 지키고 있다. 극 중 살인사건 용의자로 지목된 앵커 고혜란(김남주 분)과 변호를 맡은 남편 강태욱(지진희 분)의 호연과 더불어 이들을 둘러싼 애절한 멜로디와 노랫말이 말 그대로 ‘아픈 상처를 저며온’ 덕분이다.
태욱의 테마곡 ‘섬데이(Someday)’도 갈수록 탄력을 받았다. ‘에려 오는 지독한 상처가/독이 되어 너를 삼킬 때에도/그때도 나는 너를 안겠다’는 가사대로 지독한 순애보의 주인공 태욱은 살인사건의 범인으로 드러났다. 두 곡 모두 가슴을 후벼 파는 목소리를 지닌 가수 이승철(52)이 불렀다.
서울 삼성동 녹음실에서 만난 이승철은 “사실 처음 제안받았을 땐 고민이 많았다”고 털어놨다. 가창력으로 둘째가라면 서러울 그는 왜 망설였을까. 더구나 ‘미스티’ 음악감독이자 두 노래의 작곡자 개미도, 제인 작가와 모완일 연출도 OST 섭외 1순위로 그를 꼽았는데. “‘섬데이’를 먼저 보내줬는데 곡이 너무 어렵더라고요. 대중적 멜로디도 아니고. 그래서 다른 곡은 없냐고 물으니 온 게 ‘사랑은 아프다’였는데 이번엔 완전 연주 음악 같은 거예요. 결국 몇 군데만 수정해도 되겠냐고 물었죠. 제가 은근히 A/S 전문이거든요.”
‘사랑은 아프다’는 노랫말도 그가 직접 썼다. 일주일을 고민하던 끝에 영감은 갑자기 찾아왔다. 용평 스키장에서 눈을 바라보다 ‘내 안에 잠든 너의 기억은 사랑이었다’란 가사가 떠오른 것. 10분 만에 써내려간 가사와 가이드 녹음본은 그대로 3회 방송부터 삽입됐다. 드라마 ‘제빵왕 김탁구’의 ‘그 사람’, ‘불새’의 ‘인연’ 등 풍부한 OST 경험이 빛을 발한 것이다. 심지어 그가 부른 ‘그런 사람 또 없습니다’(‘슬픔보다 더 슬픈 이야기’), ‘서쪽 하늘’(‘청연’), ‘말리꽃’(‘비천무’) 등은 영화보다 수록곡이 더 유명한 경우다.
OST 흥행불패의 비결을 그는 “별거 없다. 드라마 1~2회를 보고 들어간다”고 답했다. “영상도, 연기도, 대본도 너무 좋더라고요. 대본을 따로 읽진 못했는데 가사와 너무 잘 맞아 저도 깜짝 놀랐어요.” 독일에 사는 음악감독의 디렉팅에 따라 오케스트라는 체코에서 연주하고, 엔지니어는 미국에서 매만지는 등 다국적 작업도 그에게 새로운 자극이 됐다. “체코 필하모닉 소속 연주자들인데 소리가 너무 좋더라고요. 그래서 아예 그동안 부른 OST를 모아 리메이크하면서 협연한 음반을 가을쯤 발매할 계획입니다. 발라드·댄스 등 장르별로 모아보는 것도 재밌지 않을까요. 취향 따라 찾아 듣기도 편하고.”
데뷔 33년 차인 그는 과거에 매이긴커녕 꾸준히 신곡을 내고 새롭게 히트곡 목록을 업데이트해 나가는 가수다. “2013년에 ‘마이 러브’로 12개국 아이튠스 차트에서 1위를 했는데 너무 신기하더라고요. 옛날엔 서른이면 ‘딴따라’ 은퇴하는 분위기였는데 대중예술인을 바라보는 시선이 바뀐 거죠. 아이돌이 멜론 차트를 점령했다고 속상할 필요 뭐 있어요. 제 팬들도 이제 40~50대인데 컬러링 차트가 맞는 거죠. 영역은 점점 세분화되고 있으니 저도 제가 할 수 있는 음악을 해야죠.”
그가 ‘해야 할 일’ 목록도 빼곡하다. 올해는 2015년 데뷔 30주년 당시 비자 문제로 취소된 미국 투어 재개와 함께 클래식·국악과 컬래버레이션 공연을 기획 중이다. 심사위원을 맡았던 오디션 프로 ‘슈퍼스타 K’ 이후 처음으로 E채널 ‘태어나서 처음으로’, mbn ‘그곳에 가고 싶다’ 등 예능 고정 출연에도 나섰다. 2010년 프랑스 출신 6·25 참전용사 레몽 베르나르와 만난 인연을 계기로 참전용사 관련 다큐도 제작 중이다. 그중 가장 우선순위를 두는 건 뭘까.
“다큐멘터리요. 이번 달에도 프랑스에 가서 뵙고 왔는데 매번 인원이 줄어들어요. 전엔 스무 분 이상 오셨는데 이번엔 열 두 분 밖에 못 뵀으니 시간은 없고, 마음이 급한 거죠. 올해는 완성해야 할 텐데 말이죠. 사실 그런 분들이 제 가수 생활 원동력이에요. 팬들도 공연 수익금 기부를 통해 의미 있는 일에 동참하는 걸 뿌듯해하고, 저도 매너리즘에 빠질 틈이 없으니까요.”
