Gov’t launches website that compares phone prices

Starting in May, users can compare the prices of smartphones on a homepage run by the Korea Communications Commission.

The communications authority said on Thursday it will launch a portal called Wise User (www.wiseuser.go.kr), where the prices of smartphones from Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Apple will be available, as part of its plan to make smartphone costs more transparent and drag down the price tags over the long term. Users may compare the prices of both stores in Korea and in other countries.

The prices of Huawei, Xiaomi and Sony smartphones, which have a relatively small sales volume in Korea, won’t be made public.

But mobile carriers are already skeptical about the effectiveness of the measure, given the actual prices may vary according to which subscription plans and subsidy options users choose.
