(All grown up…)

This is today’s anchor briefing.

A young wife no more than 30 years old walked to the Seodaemun Prison in central Seoul every day carrying her little daughter.

She was unable to see her husband, but that didn't stop her from coming.

A week before the Supreme Court’s ruling is announced, a warmhearted prison guard, who was aware of the wife’s helpless attempts, allowed her to see her husband from afar.

During the very short moment when the man saw his wife and daughter…

and knowing that  showing any slight recognition would result in him getting into trouble, the father mumbled a few words to his daughter.

"You’ve grown up so much… I can barely recognize you…"

All of the accused were executed less than 24 hours after the ruling of capital punishment was handed down.

* the accused: 피의자

“The saddest thing is that those who were accused are no longer here because they were executed,”
- Judge Lee Ki-taek at a retrial of the "People’s Revolutionary Party Case" in 2005

The court decided to retry the case 30 years later and then the court acquitted them in 2007.

In order to continue the Park Chung Hee dictatorship, the judiciary committed legal murder on dissidents. It was a heartbreaking moment in Korean history.

Regarding the case, weren’t there already two Supreme Court rulings?
- September 10, 2012 "Sohn Suk-hee’s Focus of Attention"

September 2012

Just 100 days before the 18th presidential election day.

When questioned about the executions, Park Geun-hye, a presidential candidate at the time, made dismissive remarks as if the Supreme Court handed down two different rulings on the same case even though the retrial corrected the earlier wrong ruling.

Was it because the public was angry?

She’s not reading it incorrectly...
It’s just that her pronunciation is off…
- Rep. Lee Sang-il of the Saenuri Party (September 24, 2012)

Even when she was reading her prepared apology out loud, she mispronounced Inhyeokdang, the People’s Revolutionary Party, as Minhyeokdang, causing commentators to question her sincerity.

Maybe this was a sign that she would not respect the law…

And last week

The legal murder by prosecutors kowtowing to incumbent political power
The Ministry of Justice that bent its knees to the forces of the candlelight coup d'état
The demise of the rule of law. Murder trial

“legal murder”

A term that shouldn’t be recklessly used…

That term was spoken out by the loyal supporters of former President Park.

“The accused Park Geun-hye is sentenced to 24 years in prison and 18 billion won in fines.”
- Seoul Central District Court during the trial on April 6, 2018.

The reason that the court allowed the live broadcast of Park’s verdict was to show that there was nothing shameful in the court’s decision. This 100-minute broadcast was directed to those who refused to read or listen to the verdict.

* verdict: 판결

Today, April 9, is the very day that legal murder was committed in 1975, taking the lives of eight innocent people.

Facing the tragedy to continue the Park Chung Hee dictatorship …

"You’ve grown so much… I can barely recognize you…"

Facing the death of a father who was never able to touch his daughter’s hair

The petals of flowers are falling down… still today.

*petal: 꽃잎
