Movie theaters in Vietnam are filling up with audiences checking out three local remakes of hit Korean films.

“Go-Go Sisters,” a local version of the 2011 Korean movie “Sunny,” hit Vietnamese theaters in early March and instantly became one of the most popular local films in Vietnam. The Vietnamese version of the 2008 Korean film “Speed Scandal” opened on March 30, while a local remake of the 2001 hit movie “My Sassy Girl” premiered on April 6. This phenomenon increases the possibility of more releases inspired by Korean films in the near future.

Recently, it was announced that the 1995 TV drama “Sandglass” will be made into a movie through a joint Korean-Vietnamese production.

Other movies like the 2011 film “My Wife Is a Gangster” or the 2012 work “Never Ending Story” have also been rumored in the industry to have Vietnamese versions in the works.

Interest in Vietnamese versions of Korean movies exploded about three years ago when “Sweet 20,” a remake of the 2014 Korean film “Miss Granny,” became a big success in the country.

“The Vietnamese market is where interest in Korean content is extremely high, as blockbusters like ‘Train to Busan’ hit No. 1 at its local box office,” said Yun Ha, manager at Korean Film Council.

“The demand for remakes [of Korean movies] jumped after the local version of ‘Miss Granny’ became a success. There, family dramas and comedies get a lot of attention.”

What catches the eyes of industry officials is how remake versions are made. It used to be common to just sell the rights to remake a film overseas, but these days, the scene has changed and those who worked on the original Korean movies actively participate in making the Vietnamese versions.

“Go-Go Sisters” was made by CJ HK Entertainment, which is a joint venture between “Sunny” distributor CJ E&M and Vietnamese production company HKFilm. The focus was to make the film more appealing to locals while using the filmmaking know-how from the original producer. While “Sunny” depicts stories that happened in 1980s, when the lead character was in high school, and again in modern times when the character is middle-aged, “Go-Go Sisters” chose 1974 for the past stories, when North and South Vietnam was unified, and 2000, when former U.S. President Bill Clinton visited the country. The music used in “Go-Go” includes modified versions of hit songs in Vietnam from the time.

Korean production company Furmo DT consulted with a local company to choose what Korean movie to remake and invest in, while DCG Plus, the rights holder of the Korean film “Speed Scandal,” was looking to sell the rights to Vietnam.

“We have set up an office in Vietnam, and have been doing research on what story would work in this market for the past five years,” said Kim Sin-seok, managing director of Furmo DT. “We are currently working with three Vietnamese companies to remake some of Korean dramas as well as some cooking-related variety shows.”

“Sandglass,” the popular drama from the ’90s, will be made in Vietnam after Korean drama production company Hyunmoo Enterprise joined with original writer Song Ji-na and Vietnamese entertainment company VIE Group. An official from Hyunmoo Enterprise said that the company is planning to make a joint Korean-Vietnamese company and create a wider variety of cultural contents, ranging from movies and dramas to entertainment shows.

The demand for Korean content is high in Vietnam as locals enjoy near-simultaneous releases of film and television from Korea.

“They are so used to Korean culture as [some of] the Korean dramas and movies are released at almost the same time as Korea,” said Kim of Furmo DT. “Also, there is still a lack of Vietnamese writers or programming, so that’s why remakes of Korean content are [so popular.]”

He also added that production costs in Vietnam are about half of what companies need in Korea to produce their projects, and the returns from sales from video on demand are “quite good.”

The fact that the movie market in Vietnam is rapidly growing also helps. The country had about 300 theaters in 2012, but the number jumped to more than 500 within the last three years. Korean theater chains like CGV and Lotte Cinema have also opened cinemas there.

“Vietnam has strong family values and respect for the elderly, which is quite close to Korean culture, and that makes Korean content more preferred by locals than content from any other countries,” said Yun of Korean Film Council, adding that increased interests in Korean content there could lead to expanding the quantity of films and dramas, as some works are made in haste without taking much time to plan and develop.
