Veteran actor Kim Sun-a still finds time to practice

Though she has ideas on how to make characters come alive, she always wants to hear stories from actors who are more experienced actors, she revealed during an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
“It was my first time playing a character named An Sun-jin and I don’t know who she is,” said Kim, explaining why she needs to keep up with her acting lessons. “If I continued to keep on acting with the tone I already have, there are some things I miss and those things are difficult to be found and pointed out while filming.”
In the drama “Shall We Kiss First,” Kim played a divorced flight attendant who finds a new love, who learns that he will die soon after being diagnosed with a fatal disease. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. “Shall We Kiss First” tried to show how people in their 40s and 50s fall in love and make new relationships. How is that different from other love stories?
A. As you become older, the pain people have inside is bigger than any [scar] that shows on the surface. Although cliche, the fact that the drama has a character who is facing death shows how deeply hurt these characters are. It was difficult. I didn’t think about it much in the beginning, but as time went by, it became more and more difficult.
Are you still overwhelmed by the drama?
Isn’t it weird if I’m not? It’s [surreal] that the drama is over.
Did you really decide to take part in the drama after only seeing the title?
As soon as I heard the title, I felt excited for the first time in a very long time. I said I would do it even without reading the script.
What were some of the most difficult things you experienced while filming the show?
The drama shows a man who will die soon and also the legal battle [that my character fights.] It also depicts how people are connected and how they feel about one another. My character goes back and forth in her emotions in the beginning of the drama, so I debated over which side I needed to focus more on. Since we filmed scenes from the present and the past, and also filmed separate epilogues for some episodes, I sometimes got confused about which time frame my character was in.
Do you think that you are having a second round of success in your acting career?
The character I played in “The Lady in Dignity” [left a strong impression]. I don’t know if you could say that I am having another round of success. I just hope that I can film happily and work in the field for a long time. No one can have every moment as their moment.
Do you think you know more about acting now with 22 years of experience?
I still don’t know much. It feels like I never get full. Like when a person enters a new society - being a member of that society is never easy. Acting is the same. Experience doesn’t make things easier. But things do get harder as you get older.

끊임없이 채찍질한다. 데뷔 22년 차 김선아는 이제 조금 숨을 고를 만도 하지만 연기 수업을 받을 정도로 자신에게 가혹하다.
"'안순진'이라는 캐릭터는 나도 처음이고 누구인지 잘 모르지 않나. 내가 갖고 있는 톤으로만 연기하다 보면 놓치고 가는 경우가 있다. 촬영 중에는 그런 점을 지적받기 어렵다. 그래서 연기 수업이 필요하다." 아직 '키스 먼저 할까요' 여운이 가시지 않은 김선아를 만나 이야기를 들어 봤다.
- 아직도 드라마에 빠져 있나.
"몰입을 안 하면 이상하지 않나. 끝났다는 것이 실감 나지 않는다. (인터뷰 당일) 오늘 새벽에도 감독님에게 '어느 세트장으로 가냐'고 메시지를 보냈다.(웃음)"
- '어른 멜로'를 표방했다. 무엇이 달랐나.
"어려웠다. 처음엔 크게 생각하지 않았는데 시간이 지나면 지날수록 어렵다는 생각이 들었다. 어른이 될수록 겉으로 드러나는 상처보다 안으로 입는 상처가 크다. 식상하지만 시한부라는 설정을 둔 게 상처를 둔 깊이가 아닐까 하는 생각이 든다. 보이는 상처와 보이지 않는 상처가 서로를 보듬어 주는 이야기를 하고 싶었다."
- 가장 힘들었던 점은.
"시한부 얘기를 하다가 소송도 있고, 사랑의 감정도 있고, 사람의 관계도 있었다. 극 초반에 캐릭터가 왔다 갔다 하니 어느 지점에서 중심을 잡아야 할지 고민됐다. 시한부 시점으로 분위기가 바뀌었다. 현재와 과거를 오가고 에필로그도 따로 있다 보니 이게 어느 시점인지 헷갈렸다. 그럴 때마다 감독님과 많은 이야기를 나눴다."
- 제목만 보고 결정했다던데.
"제목을 딱 듣는 순간, 진짜 오랜만에 설렜다. 대본도 안 보고 한다고 했다. 그냥 막연하게 설렜다. '내 이름은 김삼순'을 권유해 준 언니가 있는데 이번에도 그랬다. 한 시간도 안 돼서 그냥 한다고 했다. 이런 적은 처음이다. 알고 해도 잘 안되는 작품이 있는데 '모르겠다, 그냥 가는 거야'로 결정했다."
- 지금도 연기 수업을 받는다고.
"나도 안순진이라는 캐릭터는 처음이다. 내 생각이 있지만 조금 더 경험 있는 사람들의 이야기를 듣고 싶다. 스스로 생각한 톤으로만 연기하다 보면 때론 다른 것을 놓치고 가는 경우가 있다. 촬영하면서는 그런 점을 지적받기 어렵다. 그래서 연기 수업을 받으며 단점을 보완한다."
- 지난해부터 '제2의 전성기'라는 소리가 들린다.
"'품위있는 그녀'의 박복자 여운이 오래갔다. 전성기라는 건 잘 모르겠다. 기분 좋게 촬영하고 이런 현장에서 오랫동안 일했으면 좋겠다. 사람이 매 순간에 다 좋을 순 없다. 때로는 대본이 늦게 나올 수도 있다. 그래도 큰 소리 없이 잘 온 것 같아 다행이다."
- 데뷔 22년 차다. 연기에 대해 많이 알았나.
"아직도 잘 모르겠다. 사람이 사람을 알아 가면서 채워지지 않는 느낌이다. 사회에 나와서 사회를 알아 갈수록 쉬워지는 게 아니라 어려워지는 것처럼 연기도 똑같다. 경력이 있다고 해서 쉬운 게 아니고 나이가 들수록 어렵다. 어른들이 '어릴 때 유학 가라'고 하지 않나. 아무것도 모를 때 가는 게 도움된다고. 이제는 그게 무슨 말인지 알겠다. 지금은 뭘 배우기엔 늦었다."
