Getting into the mind of ‘Yumi’s Cells’: The web comic’s plot comes straight from Lee Dong-geon’s imagination

The web comic, which so far has around 300 chapters, gets about 30,000 likes and 10,000 responses each time it publishes. The comic depicts Yumi’s relationships and how she makes decisions in situations that many readers have experienced themselves.
The plot of the comic comes straight from the imagination of writer Lee Dong-geon. In Yumi’s world, everybody has cells that talk to one another to decide what action their person takes. When Naughty Cells think sexy thoughts, Rational Cells rise and step in when necessary. Sleep Cells sing lullabies to put Yumi to sleep and often fight with Hunger Cells who want Yumi to get food late at night.
The plot of the web comic may remind many of the 2015 Pixar animated movie “Inside Out,” but “Yumi’s Cells” actually debuted a few months before the film was released. It runs twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and although the web comic seems to deal with the very ordinary story of one woman’s love life, it frequently gets two to three times more comments and likes than any other web comic on Naver. The web comic is so popular that it even has been published as six books.

“I feel very proud of the work that I do as this can allow someone else to feel their emotions, which can be a source of power.”
Readers cheer for Yumi in the web comic as she is a character who is wishy-washy about making decisions to step forward and define who she is. In the beginning of the web comic, Yumi put her boyfriend as her top priority, but later on, she finds her true self. In Chapter 194, Yumi gets nervous about her boyfriend Woong leaving her. On an imaginary board inside her mind, she was about to put up the idea that Woong is who she is destined to be with, but then a board manager comes out and says, “If she tries to pin a strange memo I need to take it out.” The manager continues, “I’m sorry to say this, but Woong isn’t the lead male character. There’s no male lead here because there is only one lead in this story.” Readers strongly reacted to the scene and agreed that each person should be the lead character in their life.
“I think readers are attracted to Yumi because she, like them, dreams of being someone special, but is not actually someone special. They dream about being strong, but they are often not strong in real life,” said Lee.
Usually web comic writers always have some backup scripts which they can use right away if they are not ready to meet the deadline. However, “Yumi’s Cells” doesn’t have any backups. Lee said that he used to have some, but he kept on making corrections, wanting to make each story better.
“I get anxious two or three times right before the deadline because I don’t have any backups, but this works better because I can get the reader’s opinions and responses while writing each chapter,” Lee said.
Since Lee seems quite knowledgeable about what women think in his stories, many readers assume the writer is a woman.
“I don’t think the ideas that men and women have are that different,” said Lee. “However, the way they express how they feel sure seems completely different.”
At the same time, it isn’t always easy for Lee to understand what women think. Lee thinks things over and over in order to feel what Yumi would feel in certain situations. Then, he also considers what a wife would say to express whatever she’s feeling to a husband.
“Regardless of the gender, I think [my] desire to take a relationship more seriously and with caution is reflected in my stories,” said Lee. “Maybe it is more proper to say that [my stories] show well how women in their 30s express themselves, rather than that they have depicted the inner thoughts of women.”
Lee also said that some people lose self-confidence after certain incidents, while others take that moment as an opportunity to grow. For Yumi, acting like an adult is her mission in the story.
“I want to show how Yumi changes and grows as she goes through many different incidents,” he said.

평범한 당신이 바로 주인공 … 몸속 세포들이 말하네요
녹록지 않은 하루하루, 모두가 특별함을 꿈꾸지만 그러기 쉽지 않은 세상이다. 그렇다고 슬퍼할 필요는 없다. 평범할지언정, 아니 평범함이야말로 응원을 부르는 공감의 바탕이 되곤 한다. 매회 3만개의 ‘좋아요’와 1만개 댓글이 달리는 웹툰, 바로 ‘유미의 세포들’ 얘기다.
주인공 유미의 연애사를 그리는 이 웹툰은 설정이 재미있다. 모든 사람의 내부에는 여러 세포가 있고, 이 세포들의 의견 조율에 따라 우리의 행동이 결정된다는 상상력이 이목을 끈다. ‘응큼 세포’가 야릇한 생각을 하면 ‘이성 세포’가 이를 자제시키고, 밤만 되면 자장가를 부르는 ‘자장 세포’와 배고플 때 제어가 되지 않는 ‘출출 세포’가 자주 갈등을 겪는 식이다.
2015년 7월 개봉한 애니메이션 ‘인사이드 아웃’을 연상시키기도 하지만, ‘유미의 세포들’은 그에 앞서 2015년 4월부터 시작해 주 2회 수요일과 토요일에 네이버에 연재를 하고 있다. ‘유미라는 평범한 여성의 연애사’라는 평범한 주제에도 불구하고 웬만한 네이버 인기 웹툰의 2~3배 매니어(좋아요 및 댓글 수 기준)층이 형성돼 있다. 단행본으로는 지난해 11월 1~3권에 이어 최근 4~6권이 나왔다.
‘유미의 세포들’ 이동건 작가는 이메일 인터뷰를 통해 “지금까지 약 300개 에피소드를 그렸는데 그 중 쉽게 나온 에피소드는 5개밖에 안 된다”며 “그래도 누군가에게 힘이 되고 감정 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있어 직업에 굉장한 자부심을 느낀다”고 말했다.
독자들은 웹툰 속 유미를 응원하며, 스스로 힘을 얻는다. 종종 선택에 앞서 우물쭈물했던 유미가 이야기가 나아갈수록 주체성을 되찾는 모습이 특히 그렇다. 유미는 사랑하는 남자친구를 자기 인생에서 최우선 순위로 두다가, 점차 스스로를 찾아간다. 194화에 나온 에피소드. 남자친구 구웅이 자신을 떠날까 전전긍긍하던 유미는 꿈속에서 마음속 게시판에 ‘웅이는 운명이다’라고 적으려 한다. 이때 나타난 게시판 관리자 세포는 이렇게 얘기한다. “이상한 메모 붙이면 내가 치워야 해. 미안하지만 웅이는 남자 주인공이 아니야. 남자 주인공은 따로 없어. 이 이야기의 주인공은 한 명이거든.” 독자들은 “이게 정답이다. 남자 주인공은 따로 없고 단 한 명의 주인공이 자기 자신인 것(red***)”과 같은 댓글로 큰 공감을 드러냈다.
이 작가는 “특별함을 꿈꾸지만 특별하지는 않고, 강한 모습을 떠올리지만 현실은 그렇지 못할 때가 많은 현실 속 우리 모습과 비슷하기 때문에 독자들이 유미에 끌리는 게 아니겠냐”며 “카타르시스를 주는 캐릭터라기보다 독자들이 공감할 수 있는 캐릭터라서 친근하게 느끼는 것 같다”고 말했다.
유미가 주체성을 찾고, ‘1순위’에 자기 자신을 두는 데 있어 항상 힘이 되는 세포는 ‘판사 세포’다. 판사 세포는 어떠한 상황에서도 “유미는 아무런 잘못이 없다”고 말한다. 이 작가도 판사 세포를 가장 좋아한다. 이 작가는 “힘들 때 스스로를 다독이지 않으면 그 상황에서 벗어날 수 없는 것 같다”며 “어떤 순간이 와도 유미 편을 들어주는 판사 세포를 종종 떠올린다”고 말했다.
통상 웹툰 작가들은 ‘세이브 원고’를 준비해둔다. 제때 마감을 못 할 경우에 대비해 원고를 미리 그려놓는 것이다. ‘미리 보기’ 결제를 통해 새로운 수익 모델로도 삼는다.
하지만 ‘유미의 세포들’은 세이브 원고가 없다. 이 작가는 “세이브 원고를 갖고 있던 시기도 있었지만 더 잘 만들려는 욕심에 자꾸 뜯어고치게 되더라”며 “세이브 원고가 없어 마감 전날 속이 두 배로 타들어 가지만 독자들의 의견과 반응을 빠르게 녹여낼 수 있다는 장점이 있다”고 말했다. 유미가 남자친구 구웅에게 접근하려는 친구 서새이를 막고 시원하게 쏘아붙이는 내용이 담긴 회차에는 2만 8000여개의 댓글이 달리기도 했다.
‘유미의 세포들’은 여성의 심리를 위트있게 표현하는 동시에 여성이 현실에서 참아야 했던 답답함을 시원하게 대변한다. 그래서 아직도 작가가 여성인 줄 아는 이들이 적지 않다. 이 작가는 “남녀의 마음이 다르지 않다고 생각한다”며 “다만 남녀가 표현하는 방식은 서로가 확실히 다른 것 같다”고 말했다.
젠더 감수성이 높아진 요즘, 남성이 여성의 마음을 표현하는 게 쉬울 리는 없다. 이 작가도 생각에 생각을 거듭한다. 우선 ‘내가 유미라면 어떤 느낌일까’ 생각해보고, 다음으로는 ‘그 감정을 아내가 말로 표현한다면 어떻게 얘기할까’ 생각해본다. 이 작가는 “‘무슨 남자가 술을 못 마셔?’‘축구 안 좋아한다고? 한국 남자 맞아?’ 이런 말을 자꾸 듣다 보면 나 역시 굉장히 불편해진다”며 “상대가 남자든 여자든 관계없이 신중하게 생각하고 대하려는 성향이 작품에 반영된 것 같다”고 했다. 그는 “어쩌면 여성의 심리를 잘 표현한 것이라기보다는 지금을 살아가고 있는 30대 여성의 표현 방식을 잘 담았다고 하는 게 더 맞는 것 같다”고 말했다.
앞으로 유미는 어떻게 변화할까. 이 작가는 “어떤 사건을 접한 뒤 누군가는 자신감과 의욕을 잃어버리는 반면, 또 다른 누군가는 한층 더 성장한다”며 “유미의 경우 ‘어른스러워지는 것’이 그에게 부여된 유일한 임무였다. 나도 유미가 사건들을 겪으면서 조금씩 변화하고 성장하는 모습을 그리고 싶다”고 말했다.
