‘Thriller Queen’ is ready for action : Lee You-young plays a teacher with a troubled past in ‘Marionette’

Directed by Lee Han-wook, the film portrays taboo social issues, such as juvenile delinquency and child pornography. Currently, these issues are at the fore as the voices of victims are being heard through the ongoing Me Too movement.
In the beginning of the film, Han is looking forward to her future as she prepares to get married. However, this happiness does not last for long as she becomes haunted by her traumatic past when she becomes unconscious after drinking a cup of coffee that was on her desk in the teacher’s office.
After waking up the next day in the office, Han feels that something is up when she sees that she has bruises on her wrists. Her suspicions are confirmed when an unknown person, calling themselves Master, sends her a picture from the night before. In it, she is surrounded by a group of mysterious, masked men and appears to be tied up and unconscious. As if she were a doll attached to strings, Master takes advantage of the situation and controls her.
When one of her students, Yang Se-Jeong (Oh Ha-nee), also becomes a victim of Master, Han decides to take action. Along with the help of former police officer Oh Guk-cheol (Kim Hee-won), Han does her best to reveal Master’s identity.
Lee likes how “the movie touches upon sensitive topics, such as sexual assault, and other important social issues.” After the film’s release, she sat down for an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea Joongang Daily, to talk about her character and her film. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. How do you think “Marionette” turned out?
A. I was concerned [about taking this role], but I am happy with my decision. I think the completed movie is much better than the script. At the preview, I tried controlling my tears because I had makeup on, but I was actually tearing up [inside]. However, I am not satisfied with my acting since it appears awkward in certain scenes and dialogues. Of course, there are not that many actors who are fully satisfied with their acting, but I felt that it would have been better if I appeared as a stronger woman.
What scenes were you satisfied with?
Overall, the movie itself is terrific. I really liked the car scene. Additionally, I liked the scenes where my character had difficulty breathing or when she turned stiff after fainting in the cafe. It seemed as if she were really sick (laughs). Acting … is very complicated and puzzling.
How did you view other characters, such as the students?
Well, no matter what, the purpose of movies is to entertain viewers. Even if the theme may be [sinister] or heavy, the film needs to entertain viewers. In the case of the students that were responsible for the sex crimes, I think it is sad that there are so many individuals that commit these crimes in real life.
What was difficult about playing Han?
Since Han is still haunted by being forced to film a pornographic video by a group of male classmates, she takes medicine on a daily basis to get rid of her trauma. When she feels like she no longer needs pills to sustain herself, she falls into another horrifying situation. It was difficult to act out the pain she was in, since it was hard for me to imagine what it would be like for a victim who was forced to experience such situations, not once but twice. I wasn’t sure whether my acting expressed her pain properly.
The topics that “Marionette” deals with are very sensitive issues these days. Did you research these issues or even meet a victim [to help understand your character]?
I heard about these incidents in detail through the director. Additionally, I read books written by victims and searched for news articles on the issue as well. Through my research, I learned that there are so many cases of sexual crime. It was my first time realizing that even little children are victims in many incidents.
How do you deal with your emotions?
I focus on expressing as many of my emotions as possible when I am playing my role. I try to let go of the emotions after finishing a project.
Was it difficult to film the action scenes? Did you have any worries about it?
This is the first time that I have ever filmed action scenes. I studied at an action school to get advice from an expert. I think I went there five times. Each time I went there, my skills greatly improved. I wasn’t that worried about filming the action scenes, because I am highly confident that I have great stamina. It would be really nice if I had the opportunity to star in a traditional action movie.
How did you feel about playing a teacher?
Honestly, I felt awkward about my role because I have a completely different image. Unlike teachers, who are upright and well-behaved, I have the exact opposite personality. It required a ton of effort.
How does it feel to be called a “thriller queen”?
I feel flustered and honestly embarrassed about receiving this honorary title. I think this title will disappear as soon as the popularity of this movie dies down.
What are your thoughts on the Me Too movement?
Well, though there are some Me Too incidents that were different from the movement’s original intentions, I think that it is important to hear the voices of the victims. There have been many changes since this movement emerged. For example, we now try to have meetings in an open space instead of a private space.
What are your thoughts on acting?
While acting, I feel that I am learning about life. It gives me the feeling that I can keep improving as a human being until I die. I hope that I can continue to work as an actor.

이유영 ”소모된 감정? 치유된건지, 쌓이는건지…”
'밝고 맑은' 미소가 매력적인 배우 이유영(30)이 돌아왔다. 툭 치면 쓰러질 것 같은 '청순가련' 비주얼이 돋보이는 이유영이지만 이번에도 캐릭터는 실제 이미지와 정반대, 신들린듯한 열연이 압권이다. "저 사랑연기, 멜로연기 더 잘 할 수 있는데"라며 꺄르르 웃는 이유영이기에 그녀의 연기가 얼마나 대단힌지, 그 대단한 연기를 위해 얼마나 많은 노력을 기울였는지 새삼 가늠케 한다.
이유영이 택한 영화 '나를 기억해(이한욱 감독)'는 다른 시간, 다른 장소에서 같은 수법으로 벌어지는 의문의 연쇄 범죄에 휘말린 교사와 전직 형사가 정체불명의 범인 마스터를 추적하는 이야기를 그린 작품이다. 이번 영화에서 이유영은 교사 서린으로 분해 현실과 영화의 경계에서 사회적 문제에 목소리를 높였다. 실질적으로 품고 있는 생각이 올곧기에 영화 속 이유영 역시 흔들림없는 연기로 관객들의 몰입도를 높였다.
어느덧 데뷔 5년차. 무명 세월없이 화려한 데뷔와 함께 숨가프게 달려 온 시간이지만 연기를 처음 시작했던 신인시절 마음가짐은 여전하다. 다만 무시하지 못하는 것이 경력이라고 대화의 깊이가 깊어졌고, 단단함 역시 강해졌다. 새로운 이유영의 얼굴을 보고싶은 욕심까지 생기는 시기. 이유영은 "계획을 세운다고 계획대로 되는 인생은 아니지 않나. 하고 싶은 것들을 차근차근 해 나갈 생각이다. 어쨌든 연기는 평생 하기로 마음 먹었으니까. 다양한 모습 속 밝고 따뜻한 이유영으로 기억해 주시길 바란다"는 진심을 표했다.
- 의미있는 작품에 참여했다.
"걱정이 많았는데 내심 뿌듯하기도 하다. 시나리오 보다 완성된 영화가 더 나은 것 같다. 시사회 때 화장을 하고 있어 꾹꾹 참았지만 자꾸 눈물이 나더라. 다만 내 연기는 아쉬웠다." "전체적으로 마음에 안 들었다고 해야 할까? 스스로의 연기에 만족하는 배우는 없겠지만 이번에는 특히 더 대사 등 어색한 부분들이 많이 느껴졌다. '조금 더 강한 여자로 보였으면 좋겠다'는 생각도 했다."
- 만족스러운 부분이 있다면.
"영화 자체는 좋다. 과거와 현재의 자동차 신이 교차되는 장면이 있는데 좋았다. 답답한 호흡을 연기하는 지점이나, 카페에서 쓰러졌을 때 경직된 모습 등 그런 부분들은 마음에 들었다. 진짜 아파 보이더라.(웃음) 내 연기는…. 진짜 어렵다. 잘 모르겠다."
- 숨어있다 적극적으로 변하는 인물을 연기했다.
"결과적으로 영화는 관객들이 재미를 느껴야 하지 않나. 충격이 커지면 커질 수록 극중 캐릭터에는 큰 상처가 될 수 있지만 영화적으로는 재미있게 느껴질 것 같았다. 스포일러라 말하기 조금 조심스럽긴 하지만 요즘 영화에 등장하는 그런 학생들이 사회에 있는 것도 사실이다. 현실적으로 담아낸 것 같아 크게 거부감이 들지는 않았다."
- 상처를 받는 입장이다. 연기하면서 어떤 점이 가장 힘들었나.
"과거에 숨어 살면서 병을 품고 약을 먹으며 지낸다. 약을 끊을 때가 됐다고 생각했는데 또 다시 힘든 상황을 맞닥뜨린 것 아닌가. 한 번이 아니라 두 번씩 겪다 보니까 그 때의 일이 공포로 다가올 것 같아 상상하기조차 힘들었다. 어떤 것이 맞는지 확신을 내리지 못하겠더라."
- 예민한 사회적 문제다. 자료를 찾아 보거나 피해자를 직접 만나기도 했나.
"감독님에게 범죄에 대한 이야기를 많이 들었다. 성 피해를 입은 피해자들이 쓴 책을 읽기도 했고, 뉴스 등 자료도 많이 찾아봤다. 다양한 연령대의, 심지어 정말 어린 아이들까지 범죄를 저지르고 있다는 것을 이 작품을 하며 처음 알았다."
- 소모된 감정을 어떻게 치유하는 편인가.
"음…. 쌓이는건지, 치유되는건지 아직은 잘 모르겠지만, 지금 나는 작품이 끝나면 잘 빠져나오고 있다고 생각한다. 연기할 때만 집중하는 것 같다.
- 액션같은 막싸움도 소화해냈다.
"액션이라고 할만한 연기를 처음 해봤다. 결국 몸싸움이 됐지만…. (오)하늬와 함께 액션 스쿨에서 연습도 많이 했다 잘 기억나지 않지만 한 다섯번? 정도는 갔던 것 같다. 한 번 갈때마다 훈련을 많이 받았다. 생각보다 어려웠는데 재미있기도 했다. 체력은 자신있어서 크게 걱정하지는 않았다. 언젠가 기회가 되면 꼭 정통 액션을 해보고 싶다."
- 교사 연기는 어땠나.
"사실 실제 나는 바른 이미지의 사람이 아니다. 나랑은 많이 다른 캐릭터였다. 꽤 많은 노력이 필요했다."
- '스릴러 퀸'이라는 수식어가 붙었다.
"민망하고 부끄럽다. 영화에 도움이 된다면 눈 딱 감고 받아들이겠지만…. 조만간 쏙 들어가지 않을까?(웃음) 우리 영화는 성희롱·성폭력 문제 뿐만 아니라 사회 전반에 걸친 여러 문제점을 다루고 있다. 그런 점에서 꼭 봐 주셨으면 좋겠다."
- 최근 미투운동이 사회적 이슈로 떠올랐다.
"본질이 훼손되는 사례도 있지만 분명 한 번은 언급됐어야 하는 문제가 생각한다. 그리고 좋은 결과를 위해 좋은 과정만 겪을 수는 없는 같다. 변화 자체를 좋게 받아들이면 되는 것 아닐까."
- 현장에서도 변화를 느끼나.
"많이 느낀다. 미팅을 해도 안에서 할 수 있는 것을 오픈된 공간에서 한다거나 그런 사소한 변화들이 있다."
- 맡는 캐릭터들이 늘 강하다.
"항상 끌리는 작품을 선택하긴 하는데 그런 작품이 많이 들어오는 경향도 있다. 힘든 일 당하고 상처받는.(웃음) 이번에는 선생님이라 나름 바른 역할이긴 했는데 직업이 선생님으로 설정된 것 뿐인 것 같기도 하다."
- 배우의 삶은 어떤가.
"연기를 하면서 인생을 배우는 느낌이 든다. '죽기 전까지는 배울 수 있겠구나. 인간으로서 발전할 수 있겠구나' 싶기도 하고. 배우는 평생 직업으로 삼고 싶다."
- '나를기억해'라는 제목에 빗대 '나를 어떤 이유영으로 기억해 주면 좋겠다'고 생각하나.
"진짜 너무 고민되는데…. 뭐라고 말하죠? 하하. 음…. 음…. 밝고 따뜻한 이유영으로 기억해 주셨으면 좋겠다."
