Noh Sa-yeon talks life, love and music : As she grows older, singer hopes to finish her career on a high note
When she was just a 22-year-old college student, singer Noh Sa-yeon won first prize in 1978’s MBC Campus Song Festival. Though 40 years have passed, Noh is still as bright and bubbly as she was when she was young, and her name is now in the headlines yet again.

Noh has recently been in the spotlight after her appearance on the MBC entertainment show “Radio Star” in March. She also showed off her private life as a mother and wife through the SBS show “Same Bed, Different Dreams 2,” where she put her long marriage to singer-songwriter Lee Moo-song on display. Noh and Lee tied the knot in 1994 and gave birth to a son two years later.
“More people recognize me these days, and I’m getting more calls from shows as well,” said Noh. “But I’m trying not to get too excited abut it, because I know that this too shall pass. I’m grateful for all the attention, but I think popularity comes and goes. I’ve experienced a lot in the 40 years I’ve been in entertainment.”
The following are edited excerpts from Noh’s interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
Q. What made you appear on “Same Bed, Different Dreams 2?”
A. It’s a trend these days [for celebrities] to open up your house. But I firmly believe that your house should be kept to yourself. The production staff had been asking us to be a part of the show for a very long time, and we had refused because we thought that we had nothing to show people. But in the end we decided to be on the show because they were very persistent, and we’re now past the stage of getting embarrassed by the things we show people. We used to fight so furiously, but now we called a truce. So we thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to show people how we live.
You and your husband Lee Moo-song always walk with your arms linked. Were you always like that?
We’ve been through so much, and we’ve gone through that stage in our relationship where you don’t even want to look at each other. Everything’s in place now, and actually, we’re starting to see some new things about each other. We like the way we are right now. I think we went through a certain cycle in our marriage, and I don’t think everyone experiences it. Some people break up before they get the sweet taste of reconciliation, but I believe marriage is about hitting rock bottom once, and then soaring back up.
What side of marriage did you want to show through “Same Bed, Different Dreams”?
Something that feels comfortable and natural. Being married requires you to always endure. I trust my husband very much, and our relationship has become comfortable because of that. These are the things that I wanted to show.
Do you remember the first time you met your husband?
He was a rookie singer, but the kind of person that makes you think, “Who is that guy?” He was intelligent and fresh. I knew all the other junior singers by the time [I met him] because I had been in entertainment for a long time, but Lee Moo-song was like someone from outer space. He caught my eye. I didn’t really have any feelings or relationships with men before. He was the first man I ever wanted to hold me in his arms. We dated for two years and then got married. It’s a huge blessing that I married someone who I fell in love with at first sight.
Are there any young singers that catch your eye these days?
Yes - G-Dragon [from Big Bang]. I am intrigued by those who have a lot of potential and are a little mysterious, too. He seems to be good at everything. I still haven’t found his weak spot. I had the chance to shoot something with him, and he felt like a very charming person. We’re both celebrities, but G-Dragon feels much more mysterious [than me]. I like Big Bang’s music, too.
Do you have any career regrets?
Of course I do, especially as a singer. I pulled back from my job at an age when I should have been the most active, because I was so madly in love. Personally, I would say that was the best time of my life, but as a singer, I regret that I stopped singing for a long time during those days.
What are your plans as a singer, then?
I have a new song coming out soon. It’s a love song made by [rock band] Boohwal’s Kim Tae-won. The lyrics depict pure love. It’s a song that may be a little tough for someone my age to pull off, but I really want to do a good job with it. I’d also like to work with my husband as a singer-songwriter. I’m even thinking about doing a duet song with him. We made a song called “Miracle” and sang it together, but we ended up saying that it would be a miracle if we didn’t walk out the recording studio fighting because we quarreled so much. But now that we’re in tune with each other, we can get better results.
Quite frankly, I don’t think I’ve got much time left as a singer. I’m growing old, and I won’t be able to sing with a healthy voice for much longer. So I’d like to release a good song before my voice goes away.

노사연 ”첫 눈에 반한 이무송과 결혼..큰 축복”
가수 노사연(61)은 원조 걸크러쉬다. 솔직하고, 유쾌한 성격이 매력이다.
노사연은 1990년대 대표 인기 예능 MBC '일요일 일요일 밤에'에서 폭탄 웃음을 선사했다. 노처녀 컨셉트를 강조한 캐릭터와 얌전한 표정으로 힘 자랑을 하는 콩트 등이 웃음 포인트였다. 목젖이 보일 정도로 크게 웃고, 사자후를 내지르는 모습 등도 강렬한 임팩트를 남겼다. 코미디언도 아니고 대학가요제 출신, 심지어 가창력이 뛰어난 가수가 예능에서 망가지는 걸 두려워하지 않고 웃음을 준다는 것 자체가 당시엔 꽤 신선하고 파격적이었다.
강산이 두 번 바뀌고 다시 방송가에서 노사연이 '예능 치트키'로 활약 중이다. 특유의 매력이 또 다시 통하고 있다. 지난 3월 방송된 MBC '라디오스타'로 실시간 검색어에 오르고 화제를 모은 데 이어 SBS '동상이몽2-너는 내운명'에 고정 출연하며 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다. 방송이 나간 후 노사연 에피소드가 포털사이트 메인을 장식한다.
겉으로는 털털하지만 속은 한 없이 여리고 소녀 감성을 지닌 영원한 '꽃사슴' 노사연이 데뷔 40년 만에 처음 취중토크 주인공으로 자리에 앉았다. "가볍게 목만 축일까"라고 시작한 인터뷰에서 노사연은 맥주를 혼자 4병 비워냈다. 호칭은 '큰 언니'로 정리했다.
-'동상이몽'에 출연을 결심한 계기는 뭔가요.
"요즘 트렌드가 집을 오픈하는거잖아요. 전 집은 오픈하지 말자는 게 제 생각이거든요. 근데 제작진이 결혼 25주년 은혼식 여행으로 찍자고 해서 하게 됐어요. 집 공개는 하고 싶지 않아서 (여행을 준비하는 과정을 찍기 위해) 옷방만 일부 공개했죠. 예전부터 계속 제작진이 출연해달라는 요청을 했는데 사실 저희 부부 모습이 새로울 게 없다고 생각해서 거절했는데 자꾸 출연해달라고 해서 우여곡절 끝에 출연하게 됐죠. 또 저희 부부는 어떤 걸 보여줘도 이제 부끄럽고 그런 게 없어요. 옛날엔 피터지게 싸웠는데 이젠 아군끼리 총질하지 말자는 게 되어서 여행을 같이 가는 모습을 보여주는 게 나쁘지 않을 것 같다는 생각을 해서 출연했어요."
-이무송씨와 걸어갈 때 꼭 팔짱을 끼고, 스킨십도 많이 하던데요.
"많은 걸 겪었고, 서로 꼴도 보기 싫었던 시기도 다 지나갔고 이젠 모든 게 회복돼 서로의 또 다른 모습이 보이는 단계인 것 같아요. 지금 서로 편하고 너무 좋거든요. 결혼생활에 있어서 크게 한 서클이 지나간 것 같아요. 그런데 이런 회복의 맛을 못 보고 그 전에 불행하게 헤어지는 사람도 있겠구나 라는 생각이 들어요. (결혼생활은) 바닥을 한 번 치면 다시 또 분명히 좋아지는 게 있는 것 같아요."
-'동상이몽'을 통해 어떤 부부의 모습을 보여주고 싶나요.
"그냥 편하고 자연스럽게 하는거죠. 결혼이라는 게 계속 참고 견뎌야하는 것 같아요. 그래서 결혼이 영어로 웨딩(wedding) 현재진행형인 것 같아요. 계속 현재 진행형으로 참고 견디고 그렇게 사랑을 해야하는 것 같아요. 지금 남편을 많이 믿고 있고, 부부사이가 자유로워졌고 편안해졌어요. 이런 자연스러운 모습을 보여드리는거죠."
-이무송씨를 처음 만났을 때 기억나나요.
"신인인데 지적이고 프레쉬하고, 또 '저 사람은 누구지?'라는 궁금증을 불러일으키게 하는 사람이었죠. 방송을 오래해서 다른 후배 가수들은 다 아는데 이무송씨는 새로운 세계에서 온 사람 같았어요. 내 눈에 딱 들어오는데 스마트했고 프레쉬한 모습이 너무 좋았아요. 제 이름이 노(NO) 사연이잖아요. 남자랑 사연이 없었어요. 항상 짝사랑만 하고 그랬어요. 그러다가 진짜 품에 안기고 싶은 남자(이무송)를 만나게 된거죠. 그렇게 2년 연애하고 결혼했어요. 첫 눈에 반한 남자와 결혼한 건 정말 큰 축복이죠."
-MBC '라디오스타'에 '동상이몽'까지 화제성 있는 프로그램에 출연해서 섭외도 더 많이 올 것 같아요.
"요즘 사람들이 더 많이 알아봐주시고, 섭외고 많이 와요. 라디오에서 박명수씨를 만났는데 '제10의 전성기'라고 소개해주더라고요. 하지만 이 또한 지나가는 일이라고 생각하고 동요하지 않으려고 해요. 이렇게 관심을 많이 가져주시는 것에 감사하지만 인기는 식혜에 뜬 밥알 같고 거품 같은 것이라고 생각해요. 40년 연예계 생활을 하면서 많이 경험했어요. 그래서 감사하지만 너무 들뜨지 않으려고 해요."
-요즘 아이돌 가수 중에 눈길을 사로잡는 후배 가수가 있나요.
"지드래곤이요. 전 매력이 많고 궁금증을 유발하는 친구들에게 관심이 가요. 건모도 그런 후배죠. 근데 지드래곤도 그래요. 심지어 모든 걸 다 잘하는 것 같아요. 아직 지드래곤 빈틈을 발견 못 했어요. 방송을 같이 한 적이 있는데 매력이 많더라고요. 같은 연예인인데도 지드래곤은 좀 더 미스테리한 매력이 있는 것 같아요. 빅뱅 음악도 좋아요."
-40년 동안 연예계 활동을 하면서 아쉬운 일도 있나요.
"물론 있죠. 왜 없겠어요. 특히 가수로서 아쉬운 게 있어요. 가장 열심히 활동해야하는 나이에 공백기를 가졌어요. 결혼을 하고 사랑에 너무 빠져서 공백기를 가졌거든요. 개인적으로는 정말 좋은 시간이었고 행복했지만, 가수 노사연으로서는 그때 음악 활동을 쉬어서 아쉬워요."
-가수로서 계획도 궁금해요.
"곧 신곡이 나와요. 부활의 김태원씨에게 사랑 노래를 받았어요. 김태원씨 특유의 순수한 마음이 가사에 담겼어요. 제 나이 때 부르기 힘든 감성의 사랑노래인데 잘 해보고 싶은 욕심이 났어요. 작곡가와 가수로서 이무송씨의 곡도 받아보고 싶어요. 듀엣곡도 생각하고 있어요. 예전에 '기적'이라는 노래를 만들어서 불렀어요. 그때 녹음실에서 너무 많이 싸워서 이 노래가 나오면 그게 기적이라는 말을 했었거든요. 이젠 진짜 호흡도 같아졌고, 좋아서 듀엣을 하면 더 좋은 결과물이 나올 것 같아요. 사실 전 가수로서 시간이 얼마 남지 않았다고 생각해요. 이젠 나이가 있어서 건강하게 노래를 할 수 있는 시간이 얼마 남지 않았거든요. 그래서 좋은 노래를 받아서 건강한 목소리로 불러드리고 싶어요."
