The absence of color in his paintings makes it easier for viewers to sympathize with them.
고암 이응노 화백은 80년 5월을 보고 들은 이후부터 하얀 종이 위에 검은 먹으로 수많은 사람들을 그려냈습니다.
After hearing about what happened at the Gwangju massacre in 1980, the famous Korean-French painter Lee Ungno (1904-1989) capture the brutal crackdown by painting what he saw with dark ink on a white sheet of paper.

일렬로, 원형으로, 나선형으로 서서 어디론 가를 향해서 움직이거나 염원하는 움직임.
Painting lines, moving in many directions, Lee depicted the movement of people in Gwangju heading somewhere.
필경 그들의 모습은 핏빛으로 선명했기에 노 화백은 색을 지운 무채색으로 그날을 담아냈던 것은 아니었을까…
It is most likely that Lee Ungno depicted the citizens of Gwangju in black and white because the color of blood all over them was too visible.
긴 시간 동안 소리를 지우고 색채를 지우고 숨죽여 살아가야 했던 사람들이 있었습니다.
For a long time, there were people who had to hide their voices and identity.
"폭동은 폭동일 뿐 (나는) 씻김굿에 내놓을 제물… 십자가는 내가 지게 됐다"
A riot is just a riot. [I] am just a sacrificial offering for a Shamanic ritual of purification. I have been forced to shoulder the cross.”

그리고 그들이 소리를 내지 못하는 동안 되레 당당하게 소리를 높였던 가해자와…
And while these victims were forced to remain silent, the perpetrators were instead able to voice their opinions.

Most of the Gwangju protesters were North Korean special commandos.
The May 18 Gwangju Uprising was an armed riot instigated by the collusion of Gwangju citizens and North Koreans.
이응노 화백이 차마 색을 칠하지 못했던 그 비극의 희생자들에게 되레 붉은색을 입히고자 했던 또 다른 가해자들이 있었습니다.
Lee Ungno simply could not use color to depict the hearts of the victims. However, there were other perpetrators who tried to tarnish the poor victims of the tragedy with red.

차마 드러내지 못했던 해묵은 상처들이 감춰진 그 날을 증언하고 있는 가운데…
The hidden scars are evidence of the brutality of that sad day.

Former President Chun Doo Hwan was indicted without being detained for his defamatory remarks towards the victims of the May 18 Gwangju massacre and their family members. It has been reported that 10 days ago, his house got struck by lightning.
