A lot of items that are crucial to our everyday lives were unthinkable and unimaginable back then.
하긴 미국에서 군용으로 시작한 컴퓨터.
For example, computers were initially used solely for military purposes in the United States.
그 시조는 '에니악'으로 엄청난 크기의 그 계산기가 돌아갈 때는 막대한 전력 소비 때문에 도시 전체의 전기불이 약해졌다는 전설 같은 얘기도 있었습니다.
The predecessor of the computer, the Eniac, or Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator, was an advanced calculator. Because this huge calculator consumed a plethora of energy, using it often led to to blackouts in the surrounding area.

그러니 온 세상을 컴퓨터가 뒤덮은 오늘을 당시에는 상상할 수조차 없었겠지요.
Back then, we couldn’t imagine that computers would become an integral part of our daily lives.

철도 역시 자동차에게 길을 빼앗기기 싫었을 테니까 저런 식의 보고서를 만드는 것도 무리는 아니었을 테고 말입니다.

The conflicts that arise in society are not just simple technical problems found in computers and cars. They are serious human issues.
1993년, 당시 대통령 부인이었던 힐러리 클린턴은 로스앤젤레스에 살던 11살짜리 소녀에게 편지를 한 통 받았습니다.
In 1993, then-first lady Hillary Clinton received a letter from an 11-year-old girl living in Los Angeles.

소녀는 학교에서 본 텔레비전 광고가 부당하다고 항의하고 있었습니다.
She protested that the dishwashing soap commercial she watched in school was unjust and discriminatory.

광고는 "미국의 모든 여성은 매일 기름진 냄비나 프라이팬과 씨름하고 있다"였는데, 소녀는 여성만 주방에 있는 것은 아니라고 주장했던 것입니다.
This commercial said, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.” Frustrated by this sexist slogan, the young girl wanted to point out that women don’t just belong in the kitchen.

이 편지는 크게 화제가 돼서 결국 세제 회사는 한 달 뒤 광고 문구를 '여성'에서 '사람'으로 바꾸었지요.
After the letter went viral, the dishwashing soap manufacturer made the tagline gender-neutral, changing "Women all over America" to "People all over America."

11살의 그 소녀는 다름 아닌 메건 마클.
This 11-year-old girl was none other than Meghan Markle.
유엔에서 성 평등 운동에 앞장섰고, 지난 주말 결혼식장에서도 홀로 입장했으며, 남편에 대한 복종서약도 하지 않았습니다.
As a feminist, she championed gender equality as a UN women's advocate for political participation and leadership. Last weekend at her wedding, she walked down the aisle unescorted and omitted the word "obey" when she exchanged wedding vows with her husband, Prince Harry.
