[앵커브리핑] 'I shall go to Korea…

This is today’s anchor briefing.

"I shall go to Korea"
"I shall make that trip. I shall go to Korea"

Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Republican presidential candidate, said these words on Oct. 24, 1952, ten days before the 34th presidential election.

Although Eisenhower was a novice politician who had not stepped into politics until early that year, he was able to become the presidential candidate of a major party. This was due to his effective  campaign pledges to end the Korean War.

As the Korean War protracted over two years, Americans, both at home and on the front lines, were exhausted and wanted the war to end soon. Sensing this, Eisenhower and the  Republican Party vowed to go to Korea and honorably end the war.

 * protracted over: 오래 끌다 *Republican Party: 공화당 * at the front: 일선에서, 싸움터에 나가

He won in a landslide victory. Later, most political observers concluded that “the result of the election became obvious that night.” (Professor Kim Yeon-cheol’s “Negotiation Strategies”)

That happened 66 years ago.

"The Singapore summit will not take place. If you change your mind, please do not hesitate to call me or write.”

* summit: 정상 회담.

The recent political fluctuation, which was initiated by a letter, will be recorded in history as a dramatic scene.

There was reversal after reversal over the course of a few days. We wouldn’t be surprised to see another reversal in politics as we have become numb to any breaking news.

After witnessing how the fate of the Korean Peninsula easily sways according to words of the president of a powerful nation, it’s sad that we have to look to his Twitter feed to catch what he says.

* Korean Peninsula: 한반도

But when we think about it, we have always been living in an era of uncertainty. Even our future is uncertain.

Sixty-six years ago, the  ceasefire negotiation, which begun before Eisenhower emerged on the political scene, took two years and the two parties had 160 meetings.

* Ceasefire negotiation: 휴전협상

The desire to take down the old, solid wall that divides the two Koreas may seem like a utopian dream from the beginning.

* utopian dream: 유토피아적 꿈

There’s nothing that is certain yet…

Go to Korea.
Like Eisenhower, who promised to go to Korea to end the war, we hope the leaders who caused frenzy on the Korean Peninsula last weekend will at least begin the negotiation, which may be protracted, at the venue which we have longed for.

There is another fact that needs to be said.

Eisenhower’s popular phrase “Go to Korea” carries this meaning as well:

Go to Korea '
‘Go to Korea’ also means “to take the bull by the horns.”
