Online purchases hit record in April, data shows

Purchases made using internet and mobile devices in Korea continued to show solid growth in April, government data showed Monday.

The total value of transactions made with computers, smartphones and tablets reached a record 8.74 trillion won ($8.16 billion) in April, up 22 percent from a year earlier, according to data from Statistics Korea. The agency attributed the sharp rise to increased demand for electronics, cosmetics, daily necessities and food.

The total value of mobile transactions soared 33.6 percent to 5.38 trillion won, accounting for 61.6 percent of all online purchases in April.
